I found G3 commonly selling on eBay for $150(ish).

G3.5 or G4??...

Thanks bagobitz for the info. I paid $159.00 for the G3.5 the other day, but have yet to open it. My new PC can handle the G4 with no problem. However, I wasn't sure if I should wait until I got some feedback on my post before I open it. I called the hobby store and they said I could exchange the G3.5 since it has yet to be opened for the new G4, I just didn't know if it was worth the extra $40. They have one expansion pack out for the G4, so I am told, and I am sure many more to follow.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ty..

For what ever it's worth:

I bought G4. I figured it's "only" an extra $40, and you can be assured that any new expansion packs and add ons will be for G4 not G3.5
So in the interest of staying with the new material, I went with G4.
I also believe that the existing expansion packs will work with G4, so you can still add the planes & helis. (I may be mistaken on that though).

Good Luck with your decision. I predict that you will be happy with either one, and either will do the job.

With the fact that RealFlight screwed up the TX switch positions, I would keep RF 3.5 IMO, well actually I would sell it and get Phoenix, but thats a whole 'nuther kettle of fish!!

like 2old say's G3.5 is effectively "the discontinued model"....all future enhancements are not likely to be backward-compatible.

Resist the temptation to rip the cellophane, take it back and spring the extra $40 to future-proof your investment....as the comp.spec becomes mainstream, more will want G4...3.5 will still fetch a good price, but probably only half what a used g4 will bring.

Either will save you tons of cash, but if your comp. will handle g4, you'll have improved graphics and water scenes for your $40...and, who knows, there may be a physics upgrade.

G3.5 is a totally different beast to the flaky original G3 release (which didn't even have any heli's on it! ) but all patches and upgrades have been free.(though add-ons and expansions have been chargeable)
I, for one have been well pleased with mine -but I don't think it's cost-effective to sell it secondhand and buy G4 new.

Look at the knife edge software site to see what expansions are available....you don't need to get them, the sim is already supplied with several fields , loads of planes and helis.buddy cords for JR and others with that jack ,also Futaba square, IIRC, ....the cords plug into the back of the interlink dummy transmitter, so you can control the sim with your own transmitter, the interlink, or even split the screen and 2 can fly 2 different models at the same time!

Guaranteed, you'll love it.

Personally, I looked at Phoenix, and was impressed.
Problem was: It doesn't come with a controller.
Currently, I don't have a Heli radio, and needed the Gx controller, so that pretty much made the decision for me. I won't be buying a radio until I progress past the CX2 stage where I'm at now, and I'll be using the SIM for that... so it was kind of a Catch 22.

Well, now what to do?.... I was all ready to take back the G3.5 and pick up the Newer G4. As far has the switch positions, not sure I understand seeing I am totally new to this hobby. I was lucky to keep the heli's in the air for 5 seconds, while trying it out in the store, let alone know what switch positions means. And I was just trying to hover.

I thought about the Phoenix, but I could not find a dealer around me. All the stores seemed to carry RealFlight. I checked out about 4 stores in a 50 radius.

Any suggestions????

If it were me (and it was... ). I still went with G4 despite the switches. From what I read the minor changes are not something that would affect you in flight. I really haven't heard of to many people having a real issue with it.

Your mileage may vary, but for my buck, G4 was the ticket going forward.
But opinions vary on this topic, and I'm speaking from "0" helicopter experience, but many, many fixed wing hours.

Speaking from a fixed wing point of view: I have several radios, most all of them are different (I need to replace them all too for that matter, but that's a different discussion entirely!). But... When I'd set up a new plane, it would get "Radio X" in it. I would know THAT particular radio, and equate the radio to the plane. So what-ever the switches were, THAT's what I would associate with that plane.

Over time, I knew the quirks, and different switch locations of all my radios, and it just wasn't an issue. I suspect that the same will be true here. IMHO... Don't make to much of it. At the beginning stages, everything tends to look like a lot larger issue than it really is. Time and experience will teach you what's mountain, and what's a pebble.

Fly the G4, and enjoy.
From what I've heard, the physics in G4 are a bit better than G3.5 as well, and you get the upgraded graphix.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

2old beat me to the draw again the STICKS are in the same places...just make sure you get "MODE 2" that's left throttle/pitch, +rudder right stick= elevator /aeleron (tilts main rotor for forward/backward flight and left/right roll)

the switches control idle-up (instead of the throttle going up and down with the pitch, the switch has 2 other positions each of which opens and holds the throttle to a preset value)

throttle hold, which overrides the idle-up switch and closes throttle to tickover.

dual-rate alters the sensitivity of the sticks' response .

The Futaba controller on G3 has a rotary knob as well...this is for plank's flaps or landing gear (planks or heli's )

my "real" JR has a slightly different setup and it appears this does vary.
If you read the threads, it seems that the layout has been altered for no apparent reason and that's what people are kicking about.

when you change cars, the minor controls are i different places, but you soon adapt.

just go ahead and get G4...IF you ever get bored with it,you could always sell and then buy Phoenix, 'cos by then you'll have at least 2 radios and 6 heli's

Looks like it is back to the hobby store in hopes they have one more G4 left. Some of the stores I called today were already sold out of the G4's. I got the last G3.5 just the other day. They seem to sell out pretty fast so that must be something to be said about them.

Thanks for all the info. Looking forward to hooking both up.

Yes the only switches moved are the idle up and throttle hold. All radios that Ive set up had the basic same setup of switches. Knowing where throttle hold is located at a moments notice and getting use to reacting quickly is a very important step IMO. I do believe you can use the CX controller with Phoenix, ,just wont have all the bells and whistles. Correct me if I'm wrong, just dont know why they would move those switches.
