I guess a 601 sensor is strong enough to bend the steel mounting plate !!

Unfortunately, the 601 sensor did not make it, but I'm happy to report that the steel plate made a full recovery.

Can you tell where the blades hit it? **Note to self: If the nylon cable ties that support an airplane tuned pipe break when you're inverted, it's going to be a bad day.

I can't even begin to describe the noise that the turbine made when this happened (luckily in a 2' hover!).

I'm still amazed that I found the blade fragment.

I don't yet have any experience with model turine engines, and have not heard much at all about failures of compressor or turbine blades or wheels for the models. However, its a topic I deal with daily at my 9-5.

Eric, was the cause of the turbine blade fracture determined? was the case able to contain it? Did the vibration do any structural or bearing damage?

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

The cause was not 100% certain, but likely due to power/payload overloading which caused shaft flex in the turbine gearbox. This caused the power turbine wheel to strike the housing, tearing off the blade and bending several others, also damaging a stator downstream. The housing contained the debris, it was just dented. It also destroyed the gearbox bearings, and gearing. The turbine (gas generator) was undamaged. The vibration of the unbalanced turbine wheel (at 65,000 rpm!) was serious, as was the noise, but luckily I was able to land immediately and shut it down before anything else was damaged. The turbine manufacturer has re-engineered the second stage gearbox for heavy duty operations, and it is now working perfectly.

Now, this is nothing to lose your head over, is it?

Notice that this wasn't a boom strike. The heli hit the ground kinda fast during an auto, which broke the landing gear, and sheared off the whole head, blades and all. The body of the heli lay wrecked on the ground while the rotor head was still spinning at speed and kept flying, like a big frisbee, landing about 100' away from the crash site.
