85MG's on my Lepton. No failures, including surviving a couple of crashes.

hs 85's..

I'm sure they would work but why bother? For a few bucks more I'd rather get a larger and stronger servo like the 3421's or 9650's

The hs 85 is a very small servo in comparison...I'd be willing to bet that under load the weaker hs85's will give you much less performance than the JR or Futaba's...

If you are looking to save a few $$ then give it a try...but honestly what's the big deal about saving $30 or $40...servos are one area that I don't really like to skimp on..

Just my opinion though..

I am with you. I plan to get 9650. Like you post earlier, Jr 3421 is the best but kind of expensive

The reason I asked HS65 because they are metal gear. I want to look at all the option that I have.

I totally agree with you that I should not cut conner on the servo which put a 1000 $ heli at risk. On the other hand, T500 is new, we have no experience on this heli.

9650 is the best for the money. would you agree?

Thanks,

Servos

Doesn't really matter what heli we're talking about...the Futaba servos are far better than the hitecs...

That simple truth doesn't change...I already have 4 9650's so that's what I'll be using in my new Trex500..

you guys can use whatever you want..

hey guys here are specks for those if your interested

DS3421SA Digital Mini SA Servo
Specs
Type: Mini Digital
Torque: 65 oz/in @ 4.8V, 75 oz/in @ 6V
Speed: .18 sec/60° @ 4.8V, .15 sec/60° @ 6V
Dimensions (WxLxH): 0.58 x 1.30 x 1.02 in
Weight: 1.04 oz
Bearing: Dual
Motor Type: Coreless
Gears: Nylon

anyone notice the .15 transit time.

the 9650 has 62 oz. of torque and has a .11 second transit time.

3421 is most definetly not the best

3400G is best .09 with 51 oz of torque, if you would rather have more torque definetly 9650

but I would go 3400g

but I have never had a heli that runs minis on cyclic.
in fact I have only had a trex 450, but I spend tons of time doing research, and I work at the most amazing hobby shop ever were all the people have years of experience

just so you know, if you care

still stands 3400G is best

I had the 9650's on my Lepton. They worked great, but the gears will strip. You do not have to send them off to replace the gears, but they are 14 dollars a set. I stripped all three of mine switching off throttle hold when I was still in idle-up. It was a 45 dollar mistake.

Do a survey and see how many people trust their cyclics to hitec servos, especially on the 450. I guess we just love to tempt fate.

I love a 9650 on a 450 tail but I parted with the idea of nylon gears on the cyclic a long time ago. 9650 gear sets run at $12 a pop. I hear the argument that you won't have as many crashes on the 500 but I'll bet dollars to donuts that your lose at least a set in every strike....probably all three. HS5245, digital, .12, 76oz with metal gears and aluminum arm included. If your snapping cases in flight, then there must be some serious heli-abuse going on.

LoveMyTrex,

Do JR 3400G's physically fit on Trex 500. Do we need any modification on the frame? You say that they withstand crashes the best. they have plastic gears and do plastic gear withstand crashes well? Did you use them on any your heli?

I like metal gears.I use HS65MG on my SE v2 and have 3 crashes on it. Still work great..

Thanks

I have seen pictures of 500s with 3400Gs on cyclic so I would think they would fit withought modification.

I know the 3421MG would servive at least mild crashes. I do not know about the nylon gear. nylon gears should not strip in flight but they would strip in a hard crash.

both look like good servos for the 500 and I can see the apeal of the MG but for performance the 3400G is definetly a better servo, although the 3421MG is probably more reliable

I do not have a 500 yet. when we get them in stock at my LHS I will have more info. I will probably spend most of my time tuesday putting all the parts up on the wall.

for performance I would say 3400G, for reliability 3421MG.

sorry just reread your question I did not mean to say 3400G were the most durable I ment they have the best specks. sorry

I now MGs survive crashes better than nylon gears.

I will be using Futaba 3102's.

don't let the price fool you. They worked extremely well on Logo 10's. Gary Wright recommended them a while back and I fell in love the first time I used them. Had Hitec HS85MG, JR 361/368/3421. The 3421 were sweet but at more than double the price.

it looks like it has enough torque at 6V but lacking in speed. the servo would probably work although I don't know if it would fit.
I think for a budget servo maybe try hitech HS225BB they have better specks then 9650 at 21$ although they also might not fit

I reject the notion that Futaba servos are always better than Hitecs. Been running 6975's on my Rap50 and even the pitch on my Rap90, plus 65MG's on my Trex 450 and 85MG's on my Lepton. Lot's of(too many) crashes over the past 2 years and no lost servos or gears (well except for one particularly violent smashup that tore the entire top off of one 65MG).

Personal preferences aside, though, I really believe that you want metal gears on the swashplate, be they JR, Futaba, Hitec, or Airtronics. They hold up much better in a crash, and the old bugaboo about wear and slop is largely misplaced...most of us don't fly a servo long enough to generate noticeable wear on even the metal gears.

This is absolutely correct. There are not enough high freak vibrations to worry about the gears wearing. Now if you put them in a Q40 w/Nelson turning 30k then you would have to worry, want to feel some real vibrations? Go and launch your friends Q-40 pylon plane some time. Vibrations are so bad the GF fuse's need to be lined to keep the servo wires from chaffing bare.

I've got so many 9650s from some of my TREx 450 tails that I'm gonna use them (now that I've swapped them out in favor of the 9257s)

hey , well what alot of people just plain dont understand about servos is strain ,workload and the type of voltage being used , the 9650s on 5.7 volts rock. working fine on my trex 600 for 60 plus flights and now they delievered everything I threw at them with my converted 700 trex with the avant head. about power systems , weight, voltage, and ratio is a big thing. the correct ratio and voltage will be easy on the gears on the servo , if you have a low voltage ( 4.8 volt nicd pack for ex) then you will bog the little motor in the servo , bogging the motor will wear out the gears faster, just like a big outrunner in a heavy machine with low voltage , strip main gears and stuff. ratio is like a 10 speed bike, do you want to climb a hill in 10th gear, well unless its not that big and you are hauling a ss. ratio , the Avant head setup for 3D and the 9650s seams to be a perfic match for each other , I couldnt stall out the servos and also notice when charging the lipo rx pack back up after one flight. that Im not drawing alot of juice during my flight ,
I have a video in my gallery of the 700 with the 9650s , and look at the reaction which shows I was trying my best to strip or stall the 9650s , the flight ended with a motor failure, kontronics slung its mags , motors ruined.
I also notice with the align head , the ratio isnt upto snuff . they could have done better with the ratios . it seams kinda hard on the servo because the heli is slow.

These are the specific servo listed in T-Rex500 instruction manual:

JR DS3405
Futaba S9257, S9650
Hitec HS-82MG, HS-5245MG

The diagram shows specifically each servo's mounting location, servo horn length, and ball link position. They even included servo horn with exact length for Hitec HS82MG.
