Looks like it may have been over torqued. Might want to get one of those hand torque drivers.

Why only be over torqued on Synergy? Don't see over torque with other heli. It is a bad design to me.

So what is the difference in design on the Kasama parts? (well aside from the obvious of metal tail blade grips.

I've been reading of others having the tails blow up and after reading this today, I'm going to get the Kasama parts when $$$ allows.

Paul,

I am sorry I have no knowledge about the design but someone mention it to me before and I forgot it. My Kasama still holding up very well. As you can see many pilots are running 95 now with the stock grips, Is that telling you somthing?

Ton

I'm pretty sure that the Kasama tail uses a stainless steel lug to attach the grips to the hub. I don't know about the bearings, but I assume it uses two radials and maybe a thrust bearing - there is no lateral play whatsoever in the grips on the Kasama tail I've seen.

Because of these reports, I'm running 95's on mine too...though I only have one flight on mine so far.

Poor parts quality is the reason Todd was talking to Craig from Century.

Please tell us more.

You mean the steel they use on the NEW Upgraded tail. The one before they had hubs fail.

Why are people using stainless bolts in such a high load application? I have NEVER had good results coming from stainless hardware. It's always the first bolt to bend, break, or strip out.
Someone please explain this to me. Is it really stronger because I don't see it.

may not be stronger.... not sure but the 12.9 metric ones i got from the bolt supplier we get our bolts from at work didn't last more than 5 flights... and they were not overtightened.

Pro2k_3d,

I'm just stirring the pot. I just find it funny when people are so into the whole RC heli drama thing. I really could care less.

Well I Googled tensile strength on the two, and s.s. actually has double the tensile strength.
steel-about 40,000psi
S.S.-about 85,000psi

although heat treat has a large factor on these numbers as well as what grade of material they are. But still in general, I guess numbers don't lie.

i tapped the hole deeper on the new one,
and relived the threads a few mm deep.then used a M3 x25 S.S. sholder bolt cut to lenth. and red loctited the sucker in there.

How will this alleviate the problem?

well i don't know if it helped or not yet only put 5 flights on it since. but you use a shoulder bolt for a "jesus" bolt right? the 3 bolts i seen break were broken appx 1 1/2 threads down from the head.
i think the shoulder can take the side loads better than the threads.
and by reliving ( if thats the right term for it) the threads in the end of the hub. it gets the shoulder down inside the "axle" and is surrounded by the bearing. so it will either survive the side loads or snap off, either way it won't be worse than what happened before...
just my opinion tho.........

Here's what I've done:

95 mm tail blades

New, hopefully better quality bolts

Red loctite on the threads (a small amount)

I didn't tighten them very tight at all. We'll see if it holds. I've been hammering the tail quite hard lately and it's holding fine. Never had a problem on my first machine until I hit the ground at terminal velocity.

Another thing to add is I don't like the way SOME of the grips have end play in the grip. I don't mind the flapping that occurs in all the N9's that I've seen but I don't like the end play.

On my first Synergy I modified the tail hub slightly to eliminate this end play.

What size tail blades were you using.

I was using 102mm blades. Never thought twice about using them either. I've always used 105mm tail blades on my R90's and never had any problems.

I wish I'd got a couple more flights on it before the tail decided to let go.

The difference is the size of the tail rotor disk on the Synergy. It's very large compared to other helicopters, this is due to the hub being longer/larger. This may be putting a lot of stress on the the tail rotor bolts.
