Man I sure do miss those wrench’in nights. Unfortunately I haven’t come across a crew as dedicated to the addiction as you guys are.
SRC Recapp Dialarotor Style- Grab a snickers! and beverage.
Unplugged from the Coast Guard for the weekend and attended the Southern Rotary Classic which was supposed to be my IRCHA! Since I was unable to attend.
Well as luck would have it “Ike” started barreling towards us the week prior. I got orders to the Coast Guard Command Center for Hurricane Response. Rode the Storm out in the Command Center and was released from those duties on Tuesday of the next week. Thinking I was going to be setting up my Heli for the big weekend those days after the storm were excruciating! Especially since I broke down and bought the 7C 2.4 combo and paid for the faster shipping, to beat the Hurricane. Yeah… that didn’t pay off. I received my new radio on Thursday evening since the mail stopped on Thursday the week prior. Grrrr. Can you feel the Pressure building?
Spent the next days trying to stay out of the way of crazy, pissed off Houstonians that were losing their patience a bit more everyday post storm, judging by the driving habits on the highway. I avoided 2 accidents on my way home Thursday from work and tried to ignore symptoms of bad gas in my truck ( sputting a bit) Pissed off myself, made the choice to head off to Dallas regardless!!, even though my carpooling buddy opted out due to commitments. Soooo Off I go, uneventful drive up and arrived at the field in time to witness some smack down on the field watching the pros warm up their birds. Managed to get my Raptor in the air with some time consuming programming, Chris you would be proud! I struggled though it and test flew it with no problems. Second flight was some FF and notice a considerable loss of power from my brand new Hyper. Pulled the muffler off and inspected the piston and found the same brown color and scratched piston! Unbelievable!! Thinking of the age old words of the Zolanator, I said to myself “ Just Fly it! “ well the next startup confirmed my suspicion Yup you guessed it.. Rear Bearing. Now I’m really peeved. Gee sure wish there was a OS rep at this gig. Nope! Another guy next to me also was down for the same thing. You would think I could go a couple of gallons of gas before I would need to think about new bearings. You would think….So I suffered through the weekend flying my twitchy 450, still on FM.
Witnessed some pretty catastrophic crashes, shook CY’s hand ( highlight!) Saw some pretty cool flying! Of yeah, this guy Jamie Robertson was really good and funny thing is he does this trick that looks just like Mike’s Tiger Trout on that CSM gyro! So hey Mike break that sucker out! Your kind of flying is in style now!
I have to say the night life was weak. Not one pro came out Saturday night to light the skies up and the after hrs social activity was nonexistent, except for the mosquitoes. Defiantly not any where close to an IRCHA like experience I was trying for. Sorry no pictures. Pam had the camera in San Antonio where they were holding up for the storm, at her Mom’s house. As for swag my new friend “Fly3d” offered up his extra Runryder hat to me since I missed the Ryder Girls on their run around the field with the free stuff. Must have been during my 3 flights. A free Align work towel to dry my rear bearing tears on, a couple of free tail blades from the “Outrage” booth who were awesome! Prior Coastie and Navy Chief running that show too. Cool heli also, very innovative design going on there. Low head speed and insane performance. And I really can’t believe how fast that Logo 600 Matt Botos flew. Truly amazing! All in all an ok weekend for me, worse for others, better than a day back here in Houston. Sending my motor out today if I can find the paperwork in my garage of boxes still not unpacked. Grrrrrrrr.
Later, Steve

Steve

If it wasn't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all.

But hey, just throw some more money at it and things will work out fine. Maybe buy a super-pro, it comes with an engine.

LOL

Hey Steve, are you sure your not running your heli fuel in your truck(spitting and sputtering)? Glad everybody there is ok. Just fly it till it won't any more, I seen you do an auto before, no problems!

Dear Heli Diary...........

Dear Diary, haven't written much in the past. Let's see, looking at the pictures above,oh, now I remember a week and a half ago there was a pre-heli deer camp outing at Chris Zolen's in Kalkaskatucky. The campers and pilots arrived Friday afternoon and enjoyed an evening of flying, tuning, and some tasty barbeque provided by Mark/Raptorchief. The evening was clear and there was some very late night tippling and night flying. I guess the last flight was at 0320 and a few heli-crazies considered staying up all night.
As for myself, I was a good little heli nut and arrived early on Saturday morning. Flying was dominated by a flock of TREX 600's being flown by Steve Balyo, Chris Zolen, Tony Lawhead, Jeff Newman, Lars Schwab, Brandon Whitten. I was sporting my Raptor 70. A few TREX 450's, a Freya 90, Raptor 50, some scalers, and Steve SR flying his Hawk Pro.
There was an afternoon lull and rainshower on Saturday that led to the building of a Jeff Newman's TREX600N as you can see in the pictures in the previous post.
The munching continued all day long with venison chili from Becky Newman, some more of Mark's barbeque, and grilling and meatballs in the crockpot.
Once the rain cleared it was back to flying and the fireplace and firepit were restoked, the music cranked up and the flying resumed.
There was some more fun night flying and some whacky nightplank flying as the tail was badly tweaked on Chris's "Extra Stiffy".
Most of the tired attendees hit the cots, cars, campers, pop-ups by about 0100 and awoke to a cloudy cool overcast day. Once the Sun burned off some of the Sunday morning crud some more flying was completed. By noon, the food was gone, beer was gone, and most of the campers were gone, bringing the pre-heli camp to a close with everyone going home and getting ready for the big official, leaves-turned-color 2nd annual FALL HELI DEER CAMP the weekend of OCTOBER 16-17-18. So there it is, you have about a month to get the camper stocked, helis fixed, add more glow wire, buy some new longjohns, get out the blaze orange coat, dust off the Elmer Fudd plaid hunting hat and come up with your best whacky recipe for a fun weekend of heli flying, food, fireworks, and foolishness. Lars has brought in the big machines, frontloader, chipper, stump grinder and enlarged the field even more. Chris is starting to stockpile more lumber for the clubhouse expansion next spring. Speaking of expansion Chris took all of us on a mini-road trip to vote on his new commercial venture. Land Baron Z, has purchased a nice little commercial property near downtown Kalkaska and will soon be the owner/operator of a Scrapbooking/Toy/Heli/Car/whatever shop that will be the new
711-convenience store for heli guys needing parts and fuel for their addiction. We need a name, ZMART, HELIPARTS'R'US. If he sold adult videos and magazines, he could call it TREX'N'SEX. Hope he doesn't call it Wings'n'Things", the locals will be stopping to buy barbeque chicken pieces.

Since then, the Northwest Michigan Heli Pilots have been flying frequently with all the nice weather the past 10 days. Some are flying Wednesday nights at Chris Z's, some at TRAMPS, and some of us are flying at a new field, the Kingsley MotoCross track a few miles East of the US-31/M-113 intersection, turn north on Schneider Road and continue about 1/4 past the pavement ends and you will see the entrance rd. No planker stankers at this site. Just helibuds, or is that Heli n' Buds. I apologize for my play on words but not for anything else. F U,,, fly upsidedown.

We flew at the MOTO-CROSS field last night and had a nice night of flying, pizza & suds, and night flying into a beautiful clear sky full of stars. Poor Tony, sporting his new Futaba 10C bought some
night flying experience. More boxes heading to Tony's door.
Did learn that if you wish to step up to a new FUTABA 10C + RX you can get a good deal in TC at "Trains & Things", $490.00. I just spotted at SERVOCITY, if you want only the 10C transmitter, they are selling them for $399.00.

As for new helis, Jeff Newman is flying his TREX600N now after the group build, and last night he was on the nipple and did his first roll. Kayla Balyo will soon be flying the old club Caliber 30 with the help of dad and some of his extra equipment, Jr 8103 TX. So now she is driving new wheels (car) and will soon be giving helis a try. Go Girl.

We are all keeping track of our buddy Steve Stedronsky Sr. He went to Munson last Friday with a little bit of heart trouble. He was looking good when I visited him Saturday. He's got a good doc and they did a little stop/start stuff to him Monday and should be right as rain soon. Must of been doing tick-tocks on his own and scared himself.

Another new heli is taking shape as Gary Meese down in Chase made the big HELIPROZ call and stepped up with the big new package with a new Raptor 50/50 Hyper/Futaba 7C 2.4 package, with a 401 and all the good servos and Froemco battery. Congrats Gary, you will be styl'in soon and your flying will really improve. Chris and I are standing-by to help you get the bird dialed-in.

Dave Johnson is busy swapping parts around his fleet to keep one of the Hirobo's flying. He did suffer a little bit of setback when he tried to clearcoat/fuel proof his electric Cobra gunship. What was he thinkin'? Anyway, Dave will attempt to blow-up his workshop as he tries to strip of the mistake with acetone.

Took a drive over the weekend up to Mackinac City/Cheboygan to see the bridge and buy some fudge. Took a back road southeast out of Cheboygan and came across a nice little building that is a Vietnam War Museum and you won't believe what they have on a post in the front yard. Take a look.

So keep flying and keep an eye on the calendar for the HELI-DEER-CAMP weekend coming up in October.

One week and counting 2nd Heli-Deer Camp/ Kalkaska

Weather yesterday, Friday was terrific. Spent time in the shop getting helis repaired, more of the same today. The good weather is
expected to continue today and tomorrow. So if you have been a good boy and put away the summer toys and gotten the winter items ready, snowblower, shovels, then go fly. I know Raptorchief is looking to fly. Our ex-USCG guys are doing well, Rich has been hanging with Curtiss learning new tricks and Steve is down in Houston flying with a new motor and radio in shorts and flipflops.
So back to the title, only one week and it's that time again for the 2nd annual Heli-Deer Camp. October 17-18-19. Get out the sweater, red plaid Elmer Fudd hat, woolies, pack the camper, cooler and fill up the fuel bottle. It's time for the guys to usher in Fall and watch the Harvest Moon while shooting fireworks, night flying, shooting spuds and sipping suds around the big campfire while peeing on trees. I know Chris has stocked up stump-chunks for Junior to stoke the bonfire.
If you have a secret favorite yummy dish, now is the time to bust a move and bring it to share. If it makes us fart or belch, so much the better. Don't forget the TUMS. We need great stories, funny antics, loud noises, and some fun heli flying. Just because Wall Street has crashed, doesn't mean we have to. Come forget your pain.
Let's see if you can burn through a jug of fuel faster than Wall Street can burn through your 401K. They may have your 401K, but you still have your 401 on your heli and they will have to pry that from your cold dead hand.
If you are not the camper, tent,RV type you can still come by for the day or even take a room just 2 miles down the road at the ECONOLODGE. So see you Friday afternoon, Saturday, Sunday. Somebody bring a new kit to be built, should it rain, we will just have to adjourn to the clubhouse and open your new kit and build it for you and you can watch in pain as a group of helinuts commits BUI, "building under the influence".
You may even see us commit FUI with your new heli.
Any questions email me or Chris.
So go fly today or build up the helipoints by doing honeydo stuff.

Until next week.

Great Day of flying

Well thanks to everyone who let me know when and where you were flying this past weekend, Steve, we were in shorts and flip flops this weekend too, take that! 80 degrees!, Nick, what were you doing on Saturday night!, well the wood has been stacked, and I will be bringing both of my Turkey cookers for deep fried Turkey, someone needs to bring stuffing. Did my first unplanned auto, not a scratch on her, that reminds me, check your exhaust tubing connection.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend, Chief

I'm looking forward to it! Congrats on the auto! I've been working on some new pirouetting maneuvers for this weekend on the sim since I haven't been able to get to the field lately. Tried a couple this morning and it looks good, hopefully the N9 will come home in one piece!

What was I doing Saturday night? I don't remember... That should tell you what I was doing

Some more pictures from Heli Deer Camp

Hi all, yes a good time, a little more reserved than last year and last spring but the food was good the flying even better and
notice all the very new iron in the group photo. I counted 30 machines and 14 pilots that I could account for.
The new wood stove was a big hit and with the indoor wood stove and outside fire ring, I think we numerically burnt more logs than
we drank cans and bottles of beer. That is an amazing statistic for our group.
Raptor Chief Mark out-did himself with the deep fryer, 1 turkey and 3 chickens. Yum Yum. The skillet cooked bacon/beans, Debra's chili, Mark's chili and all the cole-slaws, potatoe and pasta salads topped off with cookies and pies, chips, and other goodies made for a fun, food, flying filled weekend.
The weather was just perfect and let us all know it was fall, but not in a harsh way. Thanks again Chris and Debra for letting us invade your backyard.
As for the flying, lots of good day flights, and some nice night flying again. We did miss Captain Electron's(Tony Lawhead) night flying. We discovered Tony is a little electrically challenged as he tried to sort out all his glowwire bird's nest. As he removed scraps of electrical tape, wire twist nuts and other Rube Goldberg connections, things would spark, glow and get hot just sitting on the bench. Maybe next time Tony should just squirt the heli with lighter fluid, throw a match at it and then take off. Both Chris and Tony had an expensive weekend sorting out + & - battery stuff and started using motors and esc units like fuses on their Trex 500's.
Those little helis sure do fly nice if you can keep the motors and esc from turning into smoke. Nick had his IRCHA ATOM 500 going great until he did a 2 inch tail scrape pullout with only 1 inch of altitude left, hate when that happens. The boys from Kalkaska and Chase were up with Brad Matznick, Dave Wobbers and Gary Meese and son Chris came up. Thanks for coming and bringing the snacks, cookies, pies. Gary and son Chris even camped over night in their tent along with Dave Johnson in his tent also. I was comfortable in the Pop-Up camper, the Raptor chief Mark and his wife, Jeff the Newmanator and his wife, and Captain Electron Tony and "Mr. GreenJeans" Jerry Lawhead all camped comfortably in their trailers. We had the biggest crowd Saturday with Rich Smith, Jr & Sr, "Scooter" Wheaton and his lady, Nick, Big Eric and Sandy Sudhoff coming out to fly and enjoy the food and friendship. Eric has been studying hard at Great Lakes Maritime but was doing a fine job hovering his new Stinger 50. Gary Meese had his latest Heliproz package assembled (Raptor Titan 50) with all new radio, servos, motor, batteries, a full boat heli. Gary is flying well and enjoying the new level of performance of his new helicopter. Brad Matznick, brought a new Knight 50, first we have seen in these parts. What a nice looking and smooth flying machine. The Knight 50 looks like a smaller Synergy N9. Speaking of Synergy, Nick had his N9 purring and dancing the best we have ever seen it. He has also added some new moves and has changed some of his style, he is now flying the beast big and small. As always Chris Z gets smoother, quicker and is working his tush off to keep the the young guns behind him. He is using all the brain cells to lay down the smack and mess with their minds. Speaking of flying out of his mind, the "Newmanator" is off the nipple and flying out of his mind. You should have seen the back to back nutso flying Jeff was getting away with. He was ( I hate to say it, Hainenator High) and going nuts. It was a one-man dog fight in the sky. The spectators were standing and yelling and betting against his save everytime the train would come off the tracks but he pulled it off and even capped off "the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" flight with a landing on the elevated heli pedestal. Way to go Jeff. Speaking of Hainenator High, I pulled off my first night auto with the trusty old Tiger 50. Lars was there all 3 days putting up great flights with all his helis, 90, 50, 450 and his nightbird too. It is so much fun to see everyone progressing so much these past two years.
All-in-all it was a great weekend. If you missed it, I hope you had fun doing whatever it was you were doing.
So see all of you on Black Friday (Day after Thanksgiving at Chris Z's) for a fun filled day of heli flying as the Christmas shoppers fill the malls. Avoid the crazy shoppers and come join the crazy heli pilots out in the woods.

The Sim Saves the Day!!

Well I knew it had to happen some day, just not today. Were talking perfect conditions! 70, a breath of wind, and not a cloud in the sky. The day after I was caught boasting about my birds finally playing nice and flying well for once. I knocked on wood and everything. I had time for 1 flight before picking up my son at school so I grabbed the Rappy and filled her up and took off. I had free reign over the whole field so I was really letting run. To the top of a big fat loop I climbed admiring the smoke trail slicing a white line in the pure blue sky. Then it happened “ Oh Crap!” is all I got out under my breath as the smoke disappeared and an eerie silence came over the land… With out a flinch I flipped her right side up and dumped the collective. I couldn’t have asked for a better position for my first HIGH altitude Auto. Down she soared like a hawk moving in to pounce on an unsuspecting field mouse. As she passes by me on approach to the field “short grass” her blades barking thru translation lift ( a sound I will truly never forget ), I gave a power check 10 feet prior, yup they’re spinnin’  Setting her down I realize just how much energy was left. WOW was all I could think. Then I longed for the hoots and hollers from the pits on the successful save. There was no one there to appreciate what had just occurred. The two spectators were too far into discussing politics or Medicare. 
Post Mishap analysis:
I reckon ( that’s what they say here) the fuel I put in was laced with some condensation from baking in my truck all day at work. I checked the clunk lines last night and all were fine. The wx was a bit colder then the last time I flew but only by 15 degrees or so. I was running rich anyway cause I ‘m still breaking in my engine. My other assumption is the Enya 4 plug I put in it was not hot enough compared to the OS#8 I usually run. I’m no engine guy so I really don’t know if other adjustments were off. It seemed fine to me.
So the moral of the story is that Simulator saved my bacon. Until next time fellas, this is Texmech signing off.
