Corrections to Summer Camp

Sorry Nick, I was sitting on the couch with a cold and feeling yucky when I wrote the above, it has been corrected, and no Steve Balyo didn't crash my Raptor, I did that all by myself.
Anyway, a few Alka Seltzer Cold Plus tablets and I feel better.
Feel free to post your version of the truth as you know it.

Just bustin on ya Mikey! What are you doing with a cold during summer anyway? Not that you would know it was summer with this weather.

I would just like to add that I did a little night flying with Balyo's 600N and it was still in one piece after I was finished unlike last year and the Evo 50!!

June/July Heli Recap

Hello fellow NWMICH rotorheads and followers,
Well I wrote this once and lost it. I have been quiet for awhile as the old laptop took a vacation to Austin,TX for a power switch.
Anyway, when last I left you, we had concluded a successful Summer Heli Camp weekend in kalkaska at Chris Zolen's termite teepee.
At about the same time we kicked off the regular Wednesday night flying sessions at the TRAMPS Rennie School Rd flying field. These have been well attended with between 8-11 pilots at each session. The sessions have also seen impromptu hotdogs roasts, pizza parties, KFC chicken buckets and on 3 occassions folks staying until dark for some night flying practice. Thanks to Chris, Mark, Steve & Steve for driving all the way in for a few hours of midweek heli fun. Our last session last week had newbies Jeff Newman and Brandon Wheaton making big progress as they will be joining our ranks to make up for the loss of our 2 USCG friends, Rich Schultz and Steve Horacek, who have moved on to new USCG assignments this week in Washington DC and Houston,TX.
Been great having them and we will see them again hopefully each year at IRCHA in Muncie IN. Also the last session was unique and special as Nick Harwood offered me a chance to fly the big beautiful SYNERGY N9, what was he thinking? I just muffed the auto on my Raptor 70 when the fuel line in the tank fell off and the engine quit. Nick visibly aged 3 years when I took off with his baby. I took it slow and was feeling her out and getting ready to go upstairs with her when, cough$%^, sputter%^&*, and the engine almost puked. I got here back around and landed safely. I think Nick's eardrums popped when his sphincter tighted upon hearing the his baby almost quit running. The moral of the story, if Nick lets you fly his heli, bring your own glow plug.
Thanks for the chance to fly a bigdog heli Nick. We even finished off last week's session with a bit of hanger flying, fun food and fun liquid at La Seniorita's Mexican restaurant.
Along with the Wednesday night flying the local boys made the heli presence felt at the TRAMPS 2-day airshow in late June and I attended the 2008 HIROBO CUP event at the Toledo Weak Signals all new renovated flying field. WOW!!!! This is a wealthy club with a first class new clubhouse, covered and electrified pilot area, golf carts and a huge mower system, and nice indoor plumbing.
The 3-day event was attended by about 70 pilots with lots of scale flying as Hirobo makes some of the best scale helicopters around. The flight line could handle 10 pilots and only 72mhz was impounded. About 15 radios total for the weekend. Many average to better pilots so this is a beginner friendly flying event. The HIROBO pilots were there to do setup help and a few lectures on new products coming. A new 90 is on the way and one of the prizes was a certificate for the first new 90 to arrive from Japan. Thanks to Hirobo and the Weak Signals for a nice event. I camped for 3 days with my pop-up camper (Vinyl Hotel on Wheels). I did crash my new Raptor 50 on Saturday after having 6 nice flight on Friday. The gyro went haywire on the first flight of the day and she went into a piro all the way to the ground as my spotter and I talked and tried several things to get her under control. At least I didn't hit the paved runway. She will be back.

As for other news, the wife, son Alex and I spent a cool day on the Great Lakes Training ship at show center for the NATIONAL CHERRY FESTIVAL AIRSHOW. You have not experienced the BLUE ANGELS or AEROSHELL AT-6'S unless they are aiming at you and passing you directly overhead at 50 to 100 feet. WOW, WOW, WOW. We could taste the smoke and feel the air off the planes. The Blue Angels opposing pass was directly over my head on the fantail of the school ship, I mean close, like heli hovering close.

Next weekend, Chris and the NWMICH mob will be camping and flying over at the Luzerne/Mio Ausable weekend
fly in. A nice bunch of folks, great camping and even better food. So come out for the weekend, or a day. Take M-72 through Luzerne, go to MAPES RD turn left(north) go 1/3 mile to Brown Cabin Rd turn left and then drive a few hundred yards and look for the signs into the woods. Follow the two-track back to the grass airport always bearing left to end up on the westside of the airport. This Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Luzerne&state=MI

More importantly, there are only 30 days until we take off for IRCHA, so fly careful and get your birds and campers ready.

Some photos from the past month and from HIROBO CUP 2008

Also a Rich Schultz picture of his Align A109 present from the spring round-up

Nick Harwood and his Synergy at the TRAMPS MEMORIAL DAY PANCAKE FLY

A few National Cherry Festival Airshow Blue Angel and Aeroshell shots

Until next time, don't be shy post what you have or what is going on.
BTW contact Raptorchief aka Mark Bonofiglio if you are looking for a deal on a very blinged out Raptor 50.

How much is the gas down there?

Time to update your profile ex-yankee boy. Hope the move is going OK and the new hanger is air-conditioned and the helis aren't all runout POS's with corrosion problems everywhere.

COUNTDOWN TO IRCHA & Group News

Tick Tock, time to get a move on it guys. 10 Days until IRCHA. Are you ready? I am not but getting there. Spent the day mowing and getting home chores done and then setup the camper and started cleaning, fixing, charging and prepping my canvas palace for the trip.
Vehicle gets some attention this week along with the flight box, batteries and repairs to my helicopters.
Chris Zolen tried to coax me out to goof-off with him but it didn't happen, he was just still coming off his "Kid Rock" concert high.
The weekly Wednesday night flying sessions have been really well attended this summer, thanks for coming out guys. Last week we did a head count and the nucleus of the group is unchanged after losing our USCG buddies, Rich and Steve. Poor Coastie Steve is suffering in the Houston Heat Wave, and Rich is wandering around Virginia in search of just the right heli buddies and club. Anyway back to the Wedhesday night NW Michigan Heli pilots, to replace Rich and Steve, we have gained Jeff Newman and Brandon Wheaton and both are shaping up quickly. Brandon is flying an Evo 50 with rotorpod and Jeff is flying a nice Stinger 50 and has been a steady buddy box student with Chris z and is now into forward flight. Jerry Lawhead is now driving a nice new heli, Mark B's well equipped Titan is now Jerry's new ride.
So the rundown of the core group is as follows: Chris Zolen, Steve Balyo, myself, Dave Johnson, Brandon Wheaton, Jeff Newman, Rich Smith, Bill Suhy, Tony and Jerry Lawhead, Mark Bonofiglio, Nick Harwood,Lars Schwab,Steve SR & Steve Jr Stedronsky. Almost all of the above group except for Rich,Nick,Dave and Bill will be heading off to Muncie next week. The plan is for the caravan of hooptees and helis to rendezvous next Wednesday morning 0700 at the BP Station at the intersection of M-115 and US-31 just east of the overpass on the south side of Cadillac. The caravan will be taking a leisurely 65MPH trip south to stake out our piece of the flight line for our fun in the sun vacation.
I already have the pizza phone number for dinner one evening. The group consensus is that one evening(most likely Friday) we will be grilling a big bunch of Kabobs for the group and to share with any heli friends(Like the SWARM GUYS). So make-up or bring anything special you want on the kabobs sticks, chicken, beff, peppers, onions, mushrooms, shrimps, onions, potatoes, olives,
sausage chunks, pineapple chunks, corn cobb chunks, whatever. I will have two big pans filled with barbeque sauce and teryiaki sause to dredge your kabobs in before tossing on the grills and I have 3 big cookie sheets to put it all on before we serve it up. A few layers of aluminum foil and trash bags should keep the clean-up simple.
Don't forget to bring some fire wood so Chris doesn't have to carry all of it for the night time campfires, if we each bring a few chunks we should have plenty for 3-4 nights of fun. I got my Tiki Lamp oil the other day as it is on summer closeout, good time to grab some.
So get cracking, make any lists and get a jump on next week. Any other ideas, be sure to post and pass it on here on RR or in a group email. Don't forget to start hiding the IRCHA-MONEY this week, take the cans to the store before the wife does, start pilfering from the cookie jar a little at a time so you don't get busted, check the couch cushions, the car ashtrays, you know, all the usual places.
More later, busy day here, broken boats, broken noses, parks commission meetings, birthdays, and just to suck even more of my time the Olympics in 4 days. Who plans this stuff, why not September when it is cooler, screw the NFL and college football. Oh what the heck just throw a few more balls into the air to juggle even more of my time, Oh! forgot, lesson plans too and a freakin' election. And you want to know why it takes me so long to fix my helicopters.

Save a little pocket change

Just ordered some more t-shirts, new design, hope they make it by next week. About $17 a piece. Can do a simple one design, one side for about $10 a shirt, will work on that one for next time.
