Well if most of you are like me, and I see that our beloved leader John is, we always are in the quest for just alittle bit more out of our machines. I personally like to take things to the extremes and see just what I can dig out of this deep and dark thing I call a brain. There are those that know me that say I really should be in a lab some where(not sure if it's to be studied or work there, they never tell me which). I started this project after meeting John at IRCHA and did some work on his 90 project, it got me to thinking why stop at a .90? So I went to my LHS who stock Pantera parts(SPRATTS TRADING POST,plug, plug) and bought a set of Pantera frames. I had to do some heavy modifications, but due to the fact that they are a really good grade of plastic they took the mods very well. This is what I have gotten so far. Specs are as follows, Toro 25.5cc Engine(10,800 rpm with stock carb and exhaust) Pantera frames(heavily moded)
aluminum floor plate with sliding adjustment for changable gear ratios 15,16,17 and 18 tooth pinions for a wide spread of gear ratio's
using the stock main gear. I am going to put on 620mm blades for now but will upgrade to 710's when I find a longer belt setup for the tail. This will be my winter project as it will take me some time to fab all the required parts. She's gonna use the aluminum swash plate and the metal seesaw arms plus a metal head assembly(if john has it). As 710's are pretty serious blades to swing and the engine produces quite alot of torque, I will also be using a titanium main mast. I will keep posting pictures as she begins to develope.

I love crazy people. I have a OS 91DF that I have been messing with off and on. Your sliding tray idea migh be something that would work since I can not get that much of a bigger main gear in. I need to get the ratio up to about 11:1, or a little higher. I am trying to do it without changing the main frames setup, but I may try your idea if nothing else works.

Again this is a side project, so I am not in that big of a hurry. I am planning on getting a good motor for my Pantera this week end so I can start to fly it. My old motor did not have much left in it. I may pick up a extra set of side frames and start to dig into this a bit more this winter.

Yes, I've been called a sick puppy - I'm proud of the moniker. Threads like these remind me of that 60s refrain; power to the people! What could be more fun that a boatload of power in a small frame? For what it's worth, I have shoehorned my share of small block Chevies into Datsun 240Z sport cars, a small block Ford into a Ranger, a big block Ford into a Pantera (the car), big block Chevies into Camaros (which are pretty easy actually), a Buick V6 into an MG, a Mazda rotory into a VW, a Ford V-6 into a Lotus, etc. so it should come as no suprise that I do it to model airplanes and helicopters as well. We're in the batter's box of life, so you'd better take all your chops folks because when it's over, it may well be over for good!

Turbine, Don't I wish!!!

Yeah a turbine would be sweet, but the wife would kill me! I'm not sure yet if I'll end up in divorce court over the gasser, but a turbine??!! Most definitly!!

Finally!!

Wow, seems like an age ago when I started this thread! I finally have the time to get back to this project. The head button thing is still coming along, but I have turned the mold making over to a friend that specializes in making that sorta thing (looks like it's going to be hex shaped) and I have turned my extra time back to the gasser project. I am going to tear down my nitro Pantera for the parts to build her. I really would like to have both, but can't afford another kit and radio gear at this time, besides with nitro going up, this may be the right time to switch anyways. I will say that finding the rapter 30 main gear info will help a bunch in being able to get the right ratio for the main drive. So as I dive back into it I will be posting pics. I also have located a nearby source for 134 octane drag fuel at 5.75 a gallon and the weedeater engine can fly quite awhile on a tank.

It's BACK!!!...

Since I had another kit laying around I thought it was time to revisit this project and see if I can get her flying! The time off also helped me get some ideas thought out and built for the pinion shaft and drive line. The pinion came from a rc car clutch bell. I removed the bell and notched the bearing seperator that is machined into the pinion. The notches mate to a male drive dog that mates to a female drive cup above the pinion. The whole assembly is held together by an 8/32 threaded bolt and stabalized by another Pantera 10mm bearing block on the top of the existing starting shaft block. The male portion of the drive has a long shank that goes down into the weedeater shaft drive hole of the clutch where a 6/32 bolt holds the taper on the male drive to the female taper of the clutch. The gear ratio is 5.4375 to start but can be changed due to the slots in the lower plate, just loosen the landing strut bolts and the rear frame stiffener bolt, change out the pinion, readjust and retighten, and your done. The pinions can be changed from a 13 tooth to a 20 tooth, and the main gear is stock at 87 teeth.
The rear frame stiffener(thanks Kjarman, your idea)is drilled at the center for an engine brace that will keep the frame from shifting back and forth. Currently I am working on restrengthing the frame so that it won't tweek in flight. Between the bottom plate and the frame stiffener, the frame has tightened up tremendously but still had room for improvement. The throttle servo will be moved to the back along with the battery and the fuel tank will be moved to the front, the extra weight in the tail won't be a factor as she is nose heavy right now. I am using a Tiger 50 tank as this has the most potential to still fit under the canopy once mounted.
I am going to use a stilh 10mm carb and a modded Outrage YS91SR pipe. For radio and servos DX7SE with a 7100,Align 610's on the cyclic,Futaba 401 gyro with 9254,a Multigov Pro for the govnor and SWE 620's for the blades.
I will keep you posted with any current updates as I hope to have this flying by the 1st of October.

Thomas, you sick pup you! Unsurprisingly, you are the very definition of an Audacity Models kind of pilot. Why? It's because you have both the audacity to conceive of the project, and the drive and follow through to create it.

Folks, in case you'd like to see what Thomas looks like, visit our website's the Owner's Gallery and scroll down. You'll spot him standing behind the counter of Spratt's Trading Post, where he can be frequently found lending a hand.

Frankly, I am proud to know you . . . attaboy!

Well just a small update...

I have finished strengthing the frame and I have to say that she is SOLID!!! I pondered which would be the best way tighten it back up and then it hit me, incorporate the engine itself into the frame design IE gusset the engine to the side frames! With just 2 small pieces of angled aluminum and 4 bolts the frame became so tight that I am getting less than .0025 side to side deflection! I have tagged the rear flywheel cover bolts as the mounting places for the frame gussets and thereby cutting a tremdous amount of weight away from the frame stengthing pieces and process. This allows the open section of the rear frame to remain just that, open. I'm not sure what the total weight will be yet but it won't be too extreme, I'm thinking less than 14lbs fully loaded maybe even lower than that.
Presently I am working on fabbing the cooling shroud and it's coming along but not as fast as I had hoped as there are alot of measurements, cuts, and bends to be made so that it will function as well as possible. I have also incorporated the aluminum exhaust gasket into the cooling shroud as well, so even less to worry about.
I have gotten some questions as to the pinion drive setup so here are some more pics, with some of the frames gussets and cooling shroud as well.
And you can't have a custom heli without a little bling so theres something for that as well in the form of a new tail fin.

Thats rediculous! thats almost twice the weight as a regular 50. lets hope it comes out alot less than that instead of just less. but the conversion is looking great!

Thats just a rough guess.

That would be with fuel, batteries, radio and gov. I am thinking that a smaller fuel tank maybe in order as a gasser uses way less fuel than a nitro. But also remember this, she will have torque out the A$$!! and the weight will only make her more stable. She won't be a 3D machine, just a sport flyer with big air style manuvers.

Kinda on this subject, have you all seen the CRRC 26cc that has the beam mounts. I fellow club member has one on order. He says (underline says) it is supposed to fit in .90-.120 size motor mounts. My immediate thought was the BB. If it in fact does it may be a "sorta" bolt in. Hope he gets it soon!

Well, I thought that YOU would...

Actually be the 1st to fly it. I'll be standing right behind you......r truck! Let me know how things work out on that first flight, but do me a favor and let me hold onto your keys first.
Seriously, Ive kinda hit a snag with her for the moment. It would seem that my lathe may have a little run out, as I was fighting that same problem with the pinion shaft. The 1st rendition(seen in the pics)had about .015 at the very top,(way too much), the 2nd rendition had about .008(better, but still ain't gonna fly). So I had to scrap the 2 piece shaft idea and go with something else. I think I got it now though, the new piece is solid with a 3/32 roll pin through it and the pinion is notched for the pin. A sleeve will press against the pinion and hold it in place against the roll pin. The sleeve is held in place by a locking collar with a recessed set screw so that it doesn't chew up the shaft. The new shaft has been squared where it goes into the weedeater clutch so it will mate with the clutch and give a no slip drive. The new shaft is made of 4130 cromoly and tough as HELL to machine, but should be the last part I have to remake! The run out from said part is about .0005 as it was swiped from an existing machine that was no longer working.
I was hoping to fly it this thursday at the local field out behind Spratts, but now I'm a little behind so I have some work to make up yet.
Oh and with an actual weight check, just what you see in the pics plus a little more shes at 6.5 lbs!!
