Ok,

I am well past the point of crashing (at least regularly) and am considering a torque tube upgrade for my more or less stock HawkIV.

Mostly, I am hoping it will be piece of mind because one of my crashes was related to a tail wire failure. I religiously check the set screws every few flights now. Otherwise, I may not notice much differnce as I am not doing anything particularly incredible, manouver wise.

Are the Torque Tubes much better, mechanically? That is, once installed correctly, do I need to worry about it coming loose?

How about on the chance that it DOES crash, are they really as tough as they say? Will I have to replace the entire $50 upgrade or can just the parts be obtained?

Thanks,

GPW,,, you will love the T-tube, it take less power to turn it, so there is more power for the main head, and more powe to the tail rotor !!, if you do crash you should only need to replace the tube, NO it shouldn't come loose, and you will need to adjust you gyro the first time you fly with the T-tube...

Less power?

Why would it take less power to turn the torque tube?

scotter,,, the T-tube has 1 nice and smooth bearing at the middle of the tube, the wire drive has no bearing, the wire drive creates a lot of friction as the wire rotates in the long tube !!

I noticed a big deference when I changed over my Hawk SEv2 to a T-tube !!

Update

I ordered he Torque tube from Heli-World. Took a little over a week to arrive. Kind of slow, but what's the rush and shipping was free.

Quality appeared nice, it had an extra bit in it that wasn't in the one sheet instructons and didn't have the little screw that secures the cross pin on the tail gear pinion but the part could be used fromthe old shaft for the tail gear.

Hardest part on the installation was I had extreme dificulty getting the old main mech end shaft from the drive gear bearings. There was just no getting at it, so I partially split the frames and CAREFULLY flexed them apart to remove the bearings with the shaft still stuck in it. Once done, taped the shaft out with a drift punch. The new shaft slid in nicely. Reinstall the bearings, slide the shaft in, and as the new shaft from the torque tube end had slightly shorter dimentions than the original, installed the drive gear at the extreme end of the flat spot on the shaft. Same with the TT fitting on the other end as otherwise there was binding on the frames. Otherwise, may I suggest pulling the tube bearing out of the plastic housing and inserting the housing using only pressure from the opposite side from which the bearing is inserted so as not to nothch the plastic housing, making it more difficult to reinsert the bearing whle the housing is in the tube.

The whole process took about an hour or so, if you don't count the time I just stod there trying to think of an easy way to get the old shaft out without breaking anything and without taking the whole damn thing apart.

I have not flown it yet so spent the rest of the evening making the poor man's camera mount.

yes, i too had to split the frames.... kind of a pain when the entire thing is bolted together by the CCPM mounts, requiring complete disassembly of all controls
