Thanks guys, it's a real pleasure to work with this kit.

Ben, yes, I was aware of the Airtronics, but they're even more rare around here than the JR wheels

I found some nice aluminum wheels I'm going to try, even if I have to drill and tap them myself for geometry sake.

I have all night tonight and all day tomorrow to finish this bird for Sunday, at least after I get the grass cut in the morning

Final Build Update

She is complete, and ready to test fly. All I have to do is check balance and correct once I get some fuel in the tank. I changed to a smaller flybar and used some Hirobo paddles with both weights, plus a one pair of clamp on weights.

I also changed the stock Delta position for slightly less positive Delta, per Wayne's suggestion.

It's really nice to have built a kit, sized all the links as spec, and put the pitch gauge on to see all the numbers just fall into place. I made very few adjustments to any of the links. Sub trims and travel adjustments within the radio are very negligable.

Pics added below.

$2,300 is that total cost or just the heli without engine or electronics?

Those shopping for this model look all over the world and at shops everywhere. Price can vary by close to $1000USD depending on exchange rates and which distributor has buttered on their own layer of gravy to the price.

Parts supply is reliable from dealers such as wkmodels, Ishiimokei, and Cyberheli.

Smooth Caliber 90

Erich,

Thanks for the time and info you shared with me at the Linebaugh site on Sunday. The smoothness of your Caliber 90 almost was unbelievable. That ys / muffler combination is very quiest. Nice flying also.

Great that you've posted this build thread. I'm putting mine together right now. Found something unusual though. While doing the phase adjustment on the head, I noticed that the picture on page 22 of the manual is a bit misleading (and it also gives the part number of the stabilizer bar as 1022, which comes with the standard Cal 90). They say that you should get the bar lined up fore and aft, which is surely incorrect. Anyway, I'm pleased to see that my rotorhead looks exactly like yours in your photos! By the way, did you need to size all the ball links? The ones in my kit were way too tight.

Hey Tom,

Congrats on joining the club

Looking at the drawing, I think I see what you mean. The Balls "B" are the longer ones, which the washout driver arms are attached to. That is a misprint. Line the flybar up with the tailboom and anti-rotation bracket is illustrated. The reason you use fore/aft for alignment is because you can better see the alignment, as opposed to eyeballing a perpendicular alignment side to side.

Yes, I sized all links by using a std ball that I "marred" with a pair of wire cutters. I just made a slight pinch across the ball with the cutters, which acts as a perfect little blade. I then chucked the ball into a small cordless drill to turn down the links at low rpm without getting arthritis. Make sure to go in small steps for the first couple links until you get a hang for how much you need to churn out.

Yep, that's what I thought. You're right - if you take the balls marked 'B' as the short ones, it all makes perfect sense. Anyway, got to get back to cutting out my cooling fan shroud! Looking forward to geting this thing in the air.
Tom.

Video of this bird is coming soon. I hope I can find someone at the field Sunday that is handy with a handi-cam.

If not, I'll have a tripod.

Sure hope the wind calms down a little bit, too.

I did have to pull the engine today to take care of a minor issue with the cooling fan drive pully. I have been losing mount bolts from the pully assembly that attaches it to the clutch adapter. A call to Wayne gave me the idea to fix this.

After sliding the clutch bell assembly onto the clutch adapter, smear a generous amount of blue loctite in the exposed clutch adapter. Then slide on the fan drive pulley/starter adapter assembly. Spin the pulley as you slide it onto the clutch adapter, making sure to spread the loctite around inside the pulley assembly. Take care to not get loctite into the clutch bell bearing. Hold the assembly inverted for a bit to make sure wet loctite doesn't soak into the bearing. Secure the pulley mount bolts with a dab of red loctite.

The idea behind the loctite on the clutch adapter, as explained to me by Wayne, is to prevent the pully assembly from rocking side to side on the adapter. The Loctite fills any void between the pulley ID and the clutch adpater OD. The reason I was losing bolts was due to this rocking action, which was also wearing at my clutch adapter and pulley assembly.

Other than this, I have no maintenance or reliability issues with anything on the helicopter so far.

Stay tuned for a flight video.

Erich

Video

This is a hover demo video of the Caliber 90. Taken by local Harold Johnson. The Caliber is shown with me flying the AMA Class 3 hovering maneuvers in some rough winds. Due to the winds the video doesn't really do the machine justice, but you can appreciate the sound of the heli.

Enjoy!
