News flash: Steve Kaluf has been fired by the AMA Executive VP Jim Cherry during the IRCHA Jamboree because he climbed on a mower owned by the AMA while he was on vacation to help prepare the field for the event.

I saw that, there has to be more than that. Was he not permitted to mow? Do they have rules against that? Are those rules known? Was it a Vacation/insurance issue?

Sorry, the above reason is not nearly enough to see both sides. I know this much, if I went to work while on Vacation and hopped on a piece of equipment to do something else....I'd get fired. I know that, did he know what he was doing was an issue? Had he done it before and been warned and ignored it?

See more info is needed before I help mount up for a lynch squad. I'll join one in a second if I think it is just, but I don't go off half cocked.

I have known Steve Kaluf for a few years now.

I don't know him, and I don't know Cherry either. Thats why more info is needed. And not just taking personal opinions and running with them.

Nothing personal, but when I was in Tombstone I went to boot hill. They have a headstones that tell the stories of the people interned below. One was accused of stealing a horse and hung in the same day. Later it was found out he was not guilty and they found and hung the right guy...

Years ago one of my ee's was fired by another manager. I went ready to read him the riot act on why he fired one of "my guys". Turns out when he was caught doing something wrong and told not to he went off on the other manager and starting cussing him out. I learned to get all the facts first that day.

If Cherry is just a jerk with a personal issue...What can the members do about it? Can we hold a vote of no contest?

The only way to find out what has happened is to contact your District AVP's or District VP. Their email addresses are in the AMA Mag in the back section under their district reports.
After working closely with the AMA and Steve for several years, if the EC wants him back, must be a pretty strong issue for improper dismissal. Already the feedback from the helicopter modeling community has been very strong. Even to the point that it looks like Mr. Cherry has installed a message filter on his email kicking out anything with Steve's name in it. My other emails to him not mentioning names or events have not been kicked back. It ought to be an interesting day today. If anyone know how to get the word out to the plank guys, please do it or let me know and I will.

You 3D guys may not know the half of all that Steve has done. As a contest guy, I've seen how selfless he has been running the Natls. for so many yrs, mostly not even flying, but just serving others.

That doesn't surprise me. I suspected as much.

fwiw...

If true, this doesn't surprise me...The District X VP shut our field down for a month for specious reasons, doing so unilaterally..AMA pres wouldn't even call me regarding the issue, let alone return e-mail...AMA is corrupt, needs to be disbanded, so another gang of idiots can take over..We NEED an organization like tis to fend off the Feds, but AMA is not mow the modelers friend, imho.

I think we need to vote out all incumbents , starting with the top dog, Mr Brown. It seems an empire building has occured and Steve was not in the brown noser circle. Pun intended.

On behalf of Dave Brown, President of the AMA, he is by far the leading supporter of Steve. He know what a value Steve has brought to the AMA and its membership. There are times when I totally agree that the EC just sits around and does things for kicks, but after getting to know Dave starting first with the 2001 WC in Muncie and more so even now that he is a fellow 'rotorhead', I don't believe that Dave has anything to do with this. From my understanding, it was Dave who summoned the lawyers into the EC meeting to see what could be done.

Whole Story

I consider Steve a personal friend and am saddened to hear this. Surely the whole story will eventually come out as to how and why this happened. What we know here certainly cannot be the whole story.

I have spoken with individuals close to this matter and several of you have contacted your District VP's for repsonses. All in all this looks like a matter between Steve and Mr. Cherry. Mr. Cherry was well within his rights as to what was done. Maybe it wasn't handled in the best way, but Mr. Cherry is in the position to run the day to day operations in Muncie and the final call is his. I respect the VP's that defended Mr. Cherry's actions, and I would have too under the defined circumstances. I again say that it may have been handled a little differently, but none of us know what has been going on in Muncie daily. I certainly hope and expect that Steve will land on his feet running and continue to serve the modelling community. This will be my last post on this issue. Please all of you wish Steve the best.

Not to be a prat, and not knowing any of these folks, but when I hear BS like this, all I can think is that "Hitler was in the position to run the day to day operations in Germany and the final call was his". It didn't necessarily make him correct in his actions either. Keep in mind, an idiot with authority and an impressive title is still just an idiot at the end of the day (and no, by that statement, I am NOT meaning to call anyone an idiot here!).

The man was hired to run a business, he's doing it.

If he does it poorly the EC can vote and fire him.

Sucks for Steve and his technical knowlege will be sorely missed but most of us don't know the whole story.

I agree with Tim. The only way to make change in a bureaucracy is to interrupt their nap time and you do that by making yourself heard.

I think if events transpired exactly as explained then while it may have been Mr. Cherry's right, it is also our right to get rid of Mr. Cherry.

If things are as explained, then this guy got fired for doing more work than he was getting paid for. Most employers appreciate that . . . . so to me, this just seems retarded (at least if the scenario presented is accurate).

I guess we can think anything we want to. Seems that those that know what actually happened (the other side) do not care enough share or allow to be shared. Or... it really is a big stink and they want it to dissapear under the rug.
Anyway, I think this deserves an explaination. If none is forthcoming, then I think some more poeple should get canned.

Steve

As much as I would like to see 'all' of the details, I have been told enough that I stated in my earlier post. I did receive an email from Mr. Cherry, and he pointed out to me that he WOULD NOT get involved in a public or private discussion concerning this matter. As I stated before, once I was made aware of more facts in the case, I can stand by what the EC council did in reference to Mr. Cherry's decision as he is "where the buck stops". I still believe that this matter could have been handled better with whatever outcome may have been decided.
Let's drop the subject finally, let the AMA know how you feel about Steve and let Steve and his family continue on. I'm sure that Steve will land on his feet again very shortly, and maybe even better for the hobby industry.

Hi folks,

First let me say how grateful I am to read this amount of support from those of you on this forum. I sincerely appreciate it. As most of you know I don't post much unless I can add to a discussion without controversy. In this case I do think you deserve to know the complete story, I'll leave it to you to judge me.

So, here goes...

The week prior to the IRCHA Helicopter Jamboree I volunteered to mow part of the site IRCHA would be using to AMA's Maintenance Director on the upcoming Saturday. The regular crews would still be involved with the Nats and doing this would help them get the job done sooner. The Maintenance Director told me he'd appreciate the help and would have the mowers ready for my son and I.

Later in the week Jim Cherry asked me to not request the use of any equipment during the Jamboree (a week which I was on vacation) personally as he needed to track what was being used and wanted the IRCHA Event Director to make all requests. I agreed as I understood this need.

So, the Saturday morning prior to the week IRCHA started my 16 year-old son and I met a couple of the maintenance guys, got the mowers out and started down the road to the site to be used by the Jamboree. Shortly Mr. Cherry's vechicle came flying across the grass field, and stopped me. He was very angery and asked what the heck I was doing on a mower after our conversation. I attempted to explain that I had not requested the use of the mowers and had simply volunteered to help our guys out during a time they were short handed to get all that needed to be done-done. He would not listen to me at all.

After returning the mowers to the equipment barn I again attempted to talk to him, he would not listen to anything I wanted to tell him. He then asked for my key card. I asked him if he was firing me and he replied no. I asked many times if we could talk about this, he would not. I then asked when we could talk and he replied later in the day or the next day. Later that day I called Joyce Hager in an effort to talk to someone. She was in contact with Mr. Cherry, but out of town. Later Saturday night Joyce called me to tell me to meet in Mr. Cherry's office at 2:00 pm the next day (Sunday).

I arrived a bit early and was let into the building by Mr. Cherry. We went into his office, Joyce and Mary Hurn (HR) were there. Mr. Cherry got right to the point and said I had two choices, resign or be terminated. I was in shock... Again I attempted to explain that my actions were simply as a volunteer trying to help the organization he would simply not listen to any reason in the matter. I honestly begged him for my job back and told him I'd do anything he wanted...he would not hear of it and made a comment along the lines of "how would I look to bring you back now".

I have had a lot of support from various AMA Executive Council members. Many of them argued on my behalf during the Jamboree and as I understand it at the Sunday EC meeting. However the long and short of it was that they were unwilling to overturn Mr. Cherry's decision as they felt it set a dangerous precident.

On Tuesday of this past week, in order to pick up my final check I was forced to give them a resignation letter or face having a termination on my record. While I did give them the letter in my opinion I was simply fired.

I've enjoyed the 13 years at AMA and working with many of you. I'm working hard to get re-employed within the industry. This is what I know and love, I've been doing it for 25 years and don't want to stop now.

Thanks again for your support, I hope we will cross paths in the furture again.

Regards,

Steve Kaluf
