Tail slider

Thanks for that awesome info rccarguy. I think I found a way to fit the T-rex slider on the HBK2, I just have to get some time to do it. I hope it works because this heli is working so well so far. The tail slider sucks but the pulley and shaft are at least spinning true. That is a plus on these small helis.

I also noticed that after changing to the metal swash my tracking was dead on during the entire flight. Before the metal swash my tracking would be off during the first 20sec or so of a fresh pack.

HOLY COW what a difference!!!!

Metal head assembly arrived about two hours ago, immediately opened the box and started swapping out the plastic parts. Just did the first test flight ... WOW !!!!

The difference is night and day, it flys like a totally different machine, a lot more stable and stick response is far smoother than with the plastic head assembly. My conclusion is that there are issues with the stock rotor head that came on my HBK2 (it would never hold blade tracking for more than one or two flights for one thing) but whatever the problem is I don't care anymore, it flys the way I want it to now.

In the process of doing the swap I installed all new linkages and a set of Mah 265 mm carbon fiber rotor blades. I eyeballed the linkage lengths and figured I'd do the necessary tracking adjustments out back on the first test flight. Spooled it up to check the tracking and found it right on the money! Everything looked good so I went ahead and flew a whole battery pack even though a couple things are a bit out of adjustment. I need to reset 0 pitch point, it seems to be getting lift before half throttle, (either that or the Mah blades work much better than the stock woodies which is probably very true) and I also have to do a bit of fiddling with the swash leveling to get it to hover hands off, but overall it's way better than it was.

First impression is that this is exactly what this heli needed to be "right", now it's back to the bench to do the final adjustments

T-rex slider and blade grips on HBK2

I was able to get the slider from a T-rex to work in my HBK2. I spent some time eye balling this before I realized I can get it to work. I started carving the mount from carbon fiber but then found a piece of plastic that I hacked off a licens plate bracket from when my Harley was bone stock. I have made so many sweet parts from the stock parts I tore off my Harley. The plastic they use works great for RC stuff and screws thread real well into it. So my bike and my T-rex are now part of the HBK2. The new mount was formed and then attached with a little bit of epoxy and 2 bolts ,it was put on top of the stock mount. Before that was done I cut just the tip off of the stock slider mount just behind the brass collar. With this done it allows the T-rex slider to be mounted slightly higher and it just so happens to be exactly where it needs to be. Then I held the slider where it wants to be against my new mount and made sure it was the same distance away from the end of the tail shaft and the tail case as the T-rex is. You can tell where it needs to be to work properly. Then I marked it with a small punch that was through the bearing in the T-rex slider. Drill a hole where the mark is and bolt on the slider.

can you put only the tail slider and grips on??..what is the reason for the bracket mod....by the way that looks nice DUBS....how does it perform?

You really don't even need to change the slider. I used a Trex hub and blade grips with longer linkage ends on the HBK slider, works perfectly. The Trex slider is a different diameter than the HBK slider and the stock HBK slider control arm will not work with the Trex part. Rather than spend time in the garage machining bits out of Delrin to try and mate the Trex slider to the stock linkage, I just used Align rod ends screwed on to the HBK slider, the length was exactly right. Much easier and quicker and if anything breaks in a crash, it can be fixed with off the shelf parts.

T-rex slider revision 2

I changed everything over to the T-rex plastic parts and it is better now because it is lighter than the metal. I went with the tail slider from the T-rex because of the pivots on the links, plus It's a stronger better part than the stock one. I had the parts and tools so I figure, why not. It was so easy for me to make the mount out of the plastic and if I bust up parts I never had a problem getting new ones or fixing anything. All I would have to do is one cut on the stock mount and drill 2 holes if that part ever broke, no big deal. My nose holds dead on during a punch out now and the piros are insane. To tell you the truth I think the T-rex tail blades are what is truly doing the job. This heli could use a larger pulley up front to spin the tail faster but with the tail parts I added from a Rex I feel that it is much more responsive. Whith the brushless motors it needs to move more air.

T-rex slider revision 3

Ok, so I flew my revision 2 today at the large open field. Things are much better than stock but not at all perfect yet. My punch outs are perfect which is what I was after. I did noticed that during a FF pass I can not nail the left rudder and make it spin its tail. I can pin the right rudder and make it spin but for left I have to slow down first and there is a delay before it will spin.(normal turns are fine). I am not getting enough left rudder for aggressive left stick inputs because of how far I have to set the slider to the tail case to get it to hover without turning. This limits my slider throw away from the case because on the GY401 when you set the limits they are equal both sides so I have to limit the right so the servo does not bind and it leaves only a little left pitch on the other side. The tail shaft isn't spinning fast enough so I have to mechanicaly set a bunch of right rudder to hover (this makes the slider go past nutral at hover). If it spun faster I would need less pitch and my slider would be more nutral at hover. So on my revision three I pressed 3mm drill stock on the tail pully to make a longer tail shaft and I made it long enough so I can set the hover pitch by moving the blade grip hub while the slider is nutral to get my desired mechanical pitch at hover. Then just trim the excess off flush. So with my heli hovering with my slider in the middle I now have equal throw both sides and with a T-rex slider it will extend far. I set my ATV's past 100% and WOW. Need to test it in the large field but it should be good.

thats what I LOVE about the logitec 2100t gyro...you can set left and right travel independantly and not have to deal with that situation at all....but the idea of full travel on the slider is nice...I think I'm gonna look into this idea...I just wonder if it can be done with MINI TITAN parts instead

That feature sounds real good for a gyro, that comes in handy when things are not even, but a good heli has to be symetrical to work well if you are thinking on going inverted with it IMO. Here is a pic of my latest version. The tail shaft on the HBK2 is slightly shorter than a rex so I put a longer one in and use it to slide the blade grip hub to the right to set the pitch for a hover in rate mode, rather than moving the servo to move the slider to the right. It is hard to take the gear off of the HBK2 tail shaft. This heli is made well and that gear is not made to come off!!!! But it is off and now on a hardened steel shaft. I have full left and right travel on the slider at hover. I'm going out now to test it more but I can't get to the wide open field yet. I never looked at a Titans tail gear but i would have never moded my HBK2 if I didn't have so many spare parts, nuts and bolts. I like the tail blades off The T-rex, they seem to work well. I just like these small helis that need a little bit of work, and hold up well, it's more fun.

CP Belt brushless on King?

I was thinking of getting a King and using components from my belt. Will my 3800rpm/v motor and 10t pinion work ok on the king? I know they want you to use a 3100rpm/v motor but I see others have used a 3800 motor of a different brand.

I think heli direct did me a favor I ordered the HDX300 3800rpm motor. But it looks like I got the 300HDX 4200rpm I have the fan and colored wires instead of the black wires and no fan OH well.

I thought it had an insane headspeed

I got myself REALFLIGHT G3.5 this weekend and went to an open field with the HBK today.....AWESOME this was the first time I FLEW a heli instead of hovering.....The HBK2 is really a great little heli for the price and flies excellant I had a blast, gave the HBK a real workout(or as much as I can)and it performed exactly as I needed it to.....I can see a loop or a roll in my near future

no,they are both GREAT heli's but its not a fair comparison,450 size is just more stable ,responsive and powerful, its definately a step up thats all there is to say...the MINI is AWESOME but I still fly the HBK2 daily...I like the 300 size, especially in my backyard,I can do a little more with it,the MINI is still a little intimidating in small areas

Yes I was having the very same problem and put two very thin nylon washers on the bottom side of the pullys and it doesn't slip off any more, I also use a silicone lube spay on the belt and its working better than ever. It always amazes me when a company like esky comes out with a great product like the king and misses something as simple and important like a belt slipping off, come on guys wheres the R and D dept!

hey TRYAN....I looked on the heli direct site but only saw one HDX300 motor...is there two versions?.....looks like its a good thing I waited cause now the HDX300 is described with a fan and the price is 19.99....wasnt it 24.99 last week????....I'm on that, thats a killer deal, that motor with fan for $20

about the belt slipping off the pulleys....I was reading on another sitethat apparently this is only a problem with BL main and thats the same advice given over there add some shims to the pulley between the frame and pulley......so far that hasn't happened to me yet but I have my set up really tamed DOWN

Dont feel bad guys, I had to put a thin washer on my King I tail gear in order to get he proper Mesh of the two tail box gears, they were skipping over each other causing premature wear, this can be costly at $8.00 a gear, plus shipping!!

Beware of trees...

One big problem with flying in confined areas, sometimes it's hard to avoid stationary objects like trees

I just pranged the HBK2 for the third time doing some nose in FF practice. Flying circuits lengthwise in the backyard, I was standing near the only tree in the yard and sure enough, it became a heli magnet. There's a bit of a gusty wind blowing, and it caught the King2 as I was about to turn around, pushing it up into the lower branches of the tree, before I could do anything, the rotor blades whacked a limb and down it went

Gotta say it's a tough little bird though, total damage appears to be a severely bent spindle shaft, tweaked flybar, a couple good size nicks in the Mah CF blades, and a few chipped teeth on the main gear. Mainshaft appears to be fine, and the alloy rotor head doesn't look like it has any damage at all.

The good news is that I have everything I need to fix it on the shelf now, so the repair should take less than an hour before it's flight worthy again. If this had been the Blade CP, there probably wouldn't be very many unbroken parts left to salvage
