I have been following the gestation of the 20cc Quick gasser since Irwin first posted about it. The concept of a 20cc Ei gas motor in a managable size airframe has huge appeal. The helicopter deserves to have many homes.
Due to distance from HHI i wanted to wait until i could read about cutomers success with this new machine (and my comlete lack of knowledge in things gas). A fellow clubmate(who has 20 years experience or more and a fleet of machines), in true pioneering fashion ordered one and i witnessed the maiden flight.
So i emailed Irwin

"Please send me
1 20cc gasser kit (basic)
1 20cc engine
1 hatori muffler to suit
1 engine kill switch
1 pack 4mm nord lock washers
1 pack 3mm nord lock washer
1 hhi 7332 tool set
1 air cleaner to suit
1 upgrade tail gearbox
1 pair 640mm blades

Please make sure my kit is complete, the balls, ball links, bearing , pushrods and hardware etc."

My money is now in his hands and i am excited to see what turns up in the next few days.

I already have a couple of E HHI Quick helicopters (ep-10's and 16)but this will be my first wet powered one and my first gasser.

I am sure with the assistance of my fellow club mate i will have great success with this one.

Way to go Oz,

I've been thinking about a gasser for a while myself. This little 20cc one looks a treat. Too bad it is not little and light. At 12 lb flying weight with 640's (and you thought your Razor was heavy), this is only ~1 lb less than a Spectra-G, or larger Quick gasser with 710 blades. Diff in disk loading is pretty high, in favour of larger gassers.

Maybe there is enough power in the 20cc motor to allow you to stretch the kit to use 680's. If so, this would seem to make more sense to me.

Does a motor pull-start come with the kit, or do you need to order this separately?

Good luck and keep us posted!

Cheers,
Tom C

Tom, i have seen one at my club, weight was surprisingly low and the heli had heaps of go (big surprise to me).
I cant fit any more big heli in , the shed is busting at the seams and those 700+ bladers take up so much space.

No pull start for me, i prefer to use my starter wand and save the littel weight.

20CC is no piglet....

This is a 10.5 pound machine....It can be stretched to a 680 blades...but why? If you want bigger then the 26CC is available...
640mm IS A VERY GOOD ROTOR for this machine....I will try some 660MM soon....

Going flying now...BYE

640 is as big as i want to go, i may even drop back to 620's. The one huge appeal for me was samll size as far as gassers go and this is the smallest i could find. It makes things so much more managable for me.
I just wish the post man worked weekends down here

Thanks Oz,

I just thought the pull-start would mean one less bit of gear to pack around. On the Spectra-G's you can simply remove it before flying.

The quick specs list the flying weight at 12 lb, not 10.5 lb. Maybe their specs are a bit conservative (that would be a first!). If you get a chance to weigh your mates (fueled) let us know Oz, thanks.

My light-weight single-stage Ion-x weights 10.5 lb, all up w/690 v-blades and 10s 3700 evo20's. It flys great but I'm sure that if I used 640's it would feel like a dog, imop. Hence my concern on this heli's blade loading.

I've read that this 20cc motor is a great little powerhouse with a better power/weight than the 26cc motor. Don't know if this is true or not. I think if it could handle 680's that would be great (for me anyway). I see that Mr. Quick is going to try 660's so that will be interesting. I did not know anyone actually made CF sym 660's.

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on your progress Oz. A gasser is currently on my Xmas wish-list!

Cheers,
Tom C

Remember Tom, i only want a weekend putzer. I take enough support equipment for the Australian army to the field each weekend anyway. By the time i have battery packs, chargers, glow stuff , fuel etc and a few machines i figure whats the difference.

The weight of the gasser at the club is about the same as a raptor 60 fueled. His will end up in a scale fuse so taming the power will be his challange.

It seems we can post pics easily here now so i think i will run a build report in this thread with the good bad and ugly.

Only 5 min runtime (to 75% discharge) with 10s 3700 Evo20's. I also have an older set of TP 6000 prolites. I can get 8-10 min of soft acros with this pack.

What flight time do you expect with your 20cc gasser?

Cheers,
Tom C

I have a 20oz in my 26cc Dominator and I can get at least 25min... I worry about batteries more than the fuel...

Flying the Dominator 20cc

Irwin – you read my mind – after the obligatory 5 tanks of fuel to run in the engine – I booked it in to the maintenance bay – and went though it from top to bottom. I tightened and red locktited the screws to the main shaft bearing blocks and reset the clearances on the tail and main gear pinion. There was a high spot on the main drive gear and this has now worm down to be smooth as…

I did notice that there was some lateral play between the drive shaft and the one way hearing assembly – and while I don’t have a long term fix for this yet – I put the heli upside down and fed a thin Cyano in to the shaft and capillary action sucked it in to make a rock solid fit – I had hoped that tightening the bolt that secures this assembly to the shaft would have taken up the slack – but it did not take it away completely. I also recut longer m3 screws (with a longer unthreaded section) down to size for the two screws through the shaft – top and bottom – to ensure that there was a better fit.

With the swashplate – I moved this up a touch to make sure there was enough of the guide pins in the block at negative ten degrees – this was not much hassle – and I can now get plus minus twelve degrees with zero pitch at mid stick in idle up 1 setting with all the mixing levers horizontal.

I also added some red loctite to the six screws that hold the anti-vibration engine mounting – as even with the Nordloc washers – these seem to have loosened a touch .

Finally I rebalanced the paddles – as they were slightly out of balance – and I was keen to remove any vibration in my control. I still have a bit of low frequency shake in the tail – but I suspect that this could be normal in a gasser – but I’m sure someone will jump in a help me on this

So with my fluoro coloured canopy – back to the field on Sunday to do my first circuits…..

The weather was a bit drizzly and gusty and with most of the guys huddled in the club house – I filled up and went out to the flight line.

The first impression was how solid the machine is in a hover – tried some pirouettes to test tail response and then some large 8’s – and again rock solid control. It was not long till I was doing high speed passes up and down the flight line –the power is really awesome – I have my normal mode set at about 35% throttle at mid stick – and am getting 1650 rpm on the head at this setting – when I open the throttle – hardly any change in engine pitch – and it disappears into the heavens. After 15 minutes flying I thought it best to come in and check the fuel – and it was still about half full.

I did one more flight when there was a break in the weather – and had a lot of fun – and yes I did refuel – although I sure I could have done another 15 minutes on the rest of the tank.

Next week I will set up the pitch and throttle curves for idle up one – and maybe try some gentle loops and rolls ….. I will promise to take some flying photos

Jeff

Awesome!!!!

I just got back from the field and flying two tanks through my 26cc.....which come out to about 50 minutes of flying time. I have a slight shake in the tail of mine also, but I think that is a gasser issue also...the 26cc is said to vibrate a little bit more anyway. I'm thinking of addressing that sometime, but I'm having too much fun flying.

Glad to hear that your gasser is performing as advertised.....I knew it would, but it's good to hear on the forums that Quick is a solid heli.

Happy Happy Joy Joy, a nice big box arrived today

1st thing, HHI sis a terrific job on the packing. Everything was taped down and well supported.

Thanks

"Please send me
1 20cc gasser kit (basic)
1 20cc engine
1 hatori muffler to suit
1 engine kill switch
1 pack 4mm nord lock washers
1 pack 3mm nord lock washer
1 hhi 7332 tool set
1 air cleaner to suit
1 upgrade tail gearbox
1 pair 640mm blades"

So the important stuff is in the box. I didnt get charged for the missing bits that werelittle luxury items anyway.

I did ask to make sure my heli kit was complete though and Irwin organised (due to distance) for a care package of little hardware components to be included.

Very well done on the care package.

Overallfirst impressions are very good. I feel like this is going to be an enjoyable buil as i know i wont be missing any little screws, bolts or balls
