Thats not bad at all for $20, my butterfly was $75....which is now sitting on the shelf due to the BOT, lol. its still a fun plane to fly...but the BOT is that much more!

that actually looks like a pretty fun build too.

have you flown any sail planes pervious?

What's your best estimate of average boost duration?

to be honest, i really dont know. my best estimate would be:

approx 20 seconds per boost...this puts it high enough to be hard to see....
lets say those 4 boosts take about 40% of the capacity, the 10% over the 20 minute period could be used for running electronics.

so if i were running full tilt for as long as possible, leaving 10% for the RX, i could get about 2 min 20 sec of run time.

i think that would be pushing it though...more so on the pack itself. normally when i come down, that lipo is pretty warm, despite the air vents beside the lipo.

considering that i have a ton of lead on the nose, i could easily stick a bigger lipo in it (there is even space for it). but sofar these are doing just fine. possibly in the future i will get a couple of larger lipo's specifically for the BOT. right now these are kind of my "escort" lipos...they get used on nearly everything

Don't worry about the weight .

Don't worry about the weight. We built them with two cardboard tubes in each of the root sections, to slide our lead slugs in, two per wing bout the size of a roll of dime's.

Then in front and back of the capture hook we built addittional ballast boxes for fat lead squares. To adjust the balance we's use lead shot in baggies to add or subtract as necessary. On a really windy day when fronts were comming thru we'd band on wrenches

Best trait of the BOT is when entering a core, it would track pretty straight for ever, and hold the bank till you decided to bail out.

Far as landing, come smoking in low, down wind, bank tight - a 180 as you head for the ribbion and target. Youll see it and can trust it as it carries a lot of energy.

My fondest memories are showing up a contest with the vintage stuff amoung 4 and 5 channel carbon / foam taco shell's kinda lookin down at the ole girls, then see the hot ship's get a bit miffed as we seem to get out maxes even on a cold greyed out day.

I am really surprised how many good things people have to say about the BOT. it seems to have a lot going for it. i always liked it for its looks, and its size. but i never realized until this thread that it is such a capable machine. It is nice to hear that it can hold up to the big shots...which is another reason why i wanted a better sale plane (vs my butterfly).

Don't worry about the weight

yeah....i know that a little extra weight can be a good thing, or else it wont penetrate into the wind i suppose. i know that full scale sail planes use water balast for that purpose, and dump it for landings.

i havn't really flown it enough though to notice a lot of things you guys mention. I also dont have a lot of sailplane experience. i have had my butterfly for about 6 years or so, but i only really started getting serious into thermals last year. although i have noticed that wheni find a good thermal, the BOT likes to keep turning into it on its own.

for landing...i was actually comming in at about a 60 degree dive using the "crow", i have it set for flaps up, ailerons down. its tuned (by pure luck) such that the plane neither pitches up or down when i hit the switch. i dont though have a lot of roll control during the crow, so i have to make sure im level before i start it, i can only make small corrections.

but during the dive, and using the crow, the BOT doesn't really gain any speed. i can level out a distance away, drop flaps for extra drag and let it cruise in level at about 5 feet for a couple hundred feet, haha. the flaps also let me come in a bit slower. but no matter what, it always seems to be a fight to get it near the ground.

i hope to get it out again this weekend, im having a blast with it. i still love flying my helicopters, and nothing will replace them. this is just a different type of thrill in the same hobby. its a strange feeling. it is relaxing and peaceful, yet challenging

Thanks Surprisingly the 2M GP Spirit in the front left is my primary bird. The vintage 3meter in back was a recent buy and I haven't put much time on it yet but is probably going to take over the "favorite" position

Depending on where I'm at either a Upstart for the local field or my High Start at another field that's a bit more of a drive. Lately I've been spending more time at the smaller local field for fuel reasons The short launches of the upstart kinda limits things but it's still fun. Here's a few vids of the 2M getting thrown around

I'm really considering doing an electric sailplane this winter. It probably is going to be a Skybench Big Bird with the electric mod Launching is a big part of the fun for me though Something about watching one zip up to 500' in a few seconds is just wild. I'm taking my 3meter out this weekend to get more air time on it and become more familiar with how it handles. It putters along so slow that you can almost walk beside it

Build yourself an F5B model and you'll still get the thrill of reaching 500 feet in a few seconds. I have seen them in the "10 seconds until out of sight" class, and that is no exaggeration.

I've kicked around the idea a few times but the cost has kept me from pulling the trigger.

I know what you mean about the price! You might find a "hotliner" to be a fun compromise between out and out competition performance and price. I have a Great Planes "Siren" which is a hoot to fly with a cheap geared Himax motor which is propped for 60A in flight (calculated using e-calc) and about 95A when stationary. If I do burn out the motor one day it's no big deal at the price.

The Siren is a bit fragile though, so needs to be landed carefully.

Hmmm...might have to do some "window shopping" for a hotliner

It's kinda like a high speed aerobatic plane and a glider all in one package. With a proper brushless motor they can really scream
here's an example

We've got a positively bitchen SW facing potential slope site on the E side of Las Vegas Valley that's just BEGGIN' to be opened up for slope gliders. The prevailing wind out here is out of the SW 300+ days/year.

Unfortunately it's also the site of the old city dump (closed 14 years ago), and the methane leaking from it prevents it from being used for anything yet. Big lawsuit between the city and the dump operator over it, don't know which way it'll go. Fingers crossed.

I'm not interested much in thermals, but slope flying on the G3 Sim gives me a big ol' carbon fiberglass woodie.
