how high were you getting it?

well......your "Able" to get 500' .... but I think we were getting up about 300-350' .....it's REALLY hard and nerve racking to strech it out the full lenth...I think it's like 140 paces...usually around 80 it is VERY tight.

With my larger unpowered gliders, I made male and then female molds of the inside of the nose. Hot lead was poured into the female before glueing it into the nose, to get the CG correct with the least amount of weight. Your motor would make that a bit more difficult.

Most often, I used batteries to get the CG. I also had multiple transmitters with a homebrewed additional battery box attached on the back of the battery compartment, to double my air time. (Nicads were the norm at the time. Serious duration was often done with Alkalines.)

Without backtracking your posts, I am having a mild suspicion about the link between your servos and ailerons. If the servos are out near the ailerons, with rigid pushrods, the links should be fine. If the servos are inboard, with twisted wire running through a plastic sheath for the link, some guys have missed that the unsheathed length of wire going to the aileron horns needs to be 'tinned' with solder to prevent flex and the resultant 'mooshy' ailerons, if too small twisted wire was used. Are your aileron lingages fully rigid such that nothing flexes under load? Are they also powerful enough to operate well, particularly at higher speeds?

you should definatly be able to get more then a minute out of it, and it should even be enough to search around for a thermal. look for darker patches on the ground that throw off heat.

Here is a pic of one of the ailerons.

each aileron and flap has its own dedicated HS55 servo. it does have a fair bit of torque for what it has to do.

You are almost certainly too young to remember 'Link' saying, "solid." Your setup is good. I am surprised that your aileron response was poor. Differential would certainly have some positive effect, but my guess is that that is not the main issue. How much throw at the aileron trailing edge, have your initial flights had?

Here is a pic showing the max throw of one aileron. anymore and i start to get involved with binding.

i just finished setting up the differential.

Well, damnitalltotheflightline, that's a good amount of throw. I wish you well, but my gut still thinks something else might be the issue. Good luck, but don't be too disappointed if your new differential doesn't resolve everything. Someone else may well have some better suggestions, if needed. Still, my sailplane experience makes your situation almost baffling. Even the longer wingspan jobbers can perform a token version of a 'snap roll', and a lomchevak with the big ones, powered or not, is a beautiful thing. Holler back when things are going better, or different.

thanks for the help.

i have added the the differential, and i added a little bit of rudder/aileron mixing.

i'll giver a go again as soon as i can and report back.

the only problem is that the only field i go to for planks costs me 1/4 of a tank of gas there and back (45 minute drive), so i dont generally make the trip a lot. im glad my heli field is only 25 minutes away

but as it is, today i wouldn't even attempt a roll, it was hard enough (at times impossible) just to keep it pointed in the direction i wanted.

i placed an order for two of these servoes.

http://www.greathobbies.com/product...d_id=HITHS225MS

should have them in a couple days. i should be able to send her up for another flight near the end of the week. if i have to, i will just take it to the heli field with me.

i just wish i didn't have to cut the covering to get to them... i did such a nice job on this thing.

just FYI as an update, it has been a while.

I had the BOT out again this sunday. i installed the HS225 metal gear servos on the ailerons some time ago. definate improvment in aileron control.

i had a bunch of pics taken, but still waiting for my buddy to send them.

the flaps i built are very effective.

the "Crow" is also working nicely

and it thermals like a dream. i was able to double my altitude in just a minute or two once i found one.

the 14x9 carbon fiber prop on the E-Flight Power 25 brushless outrunner motor using the E-Flight 60A ESC, powered by Align 3S 2100 20C lipo's make for some super fast climb outs. this combination pumps out huge thrust with virtually zero vibrations.

my buddy has a funtana with a Saito 120 motor in it...and my sail plane can match or exceed his climb. i can get to a decent altitude within seconds.

i will post pics soon

The BOT thermals like a homesick angel! They're pretty hard to beat. Best bang for the buck by a long way! (I have a 3m pscho-lite that thermals a little better but it's also 10X the cost).

i believe it. it took me by surprise how quickly it gained altitude. i actually didn't even really notice it at first because it happened so smooth and quickly, but my buddy did and made me aware of it.

i was fine tuning it on sunday with a buddy of mine that has a lot of sail plane experience, so he was able to give me some pointers.

almost hands off flight, just some aileron once in a while to keep it pointed where you want. I was having a blast with it.

i found out that with 4 boosts, getting to a very good altitude, and 20 minutes of cruising around, i land with about 50% of the capacity left on the 3S 2100 lipo.

so im sure if i did fewer boosts, or just one, i could stay up until im just plain old tired of it.

The unfortunate thing, is that even with my attempts to keep the tail light, i still had to put a pile (170g worth) of lead on the nose.

Im using the Multiplex connectors because the wing has 4 servoes in it. this makes it so i really only have two connectors to clip to the RX. and i reversed them, so all the servoes on the left wing use a female connector, the right wing male connector. then when i hook it up to the RX, it is impossible to get it wrong.

i also had to end up programming a throttle hold....damn electrics.

I have the windshield held on with a super strong magnet and velcro. my initial plan was to hinge the front of the windhshield, and use the magnet in the back to hold it down. but i couldn't get the hinge to work right, so i said to heck with it and grabbed some velcro to stick on.

overall i am very happy with this model, it hasn't let me down in any way

except for that aileron problem, but that was me putting weak servos in it, lol

I've had three and regretted selling every one : Original Dave Thornberg's

Iv'e had three, and got one still in the box but it's not the Mark's model kit - it's a low grade Dynoflight. I've practically recut most the rib's to get back to contest balsa quality and will build off a set of original print's.

Hard to believe, but I've actually hand launched one off a shallow dike, caught a hat sucker and max,ed out while waiting for the winch to be set up.

My close friend also ballasted one over 70oz and took the Lincolin cross country event many, many year's ago. Nothin funner than riding in the back of a pick up sitting in a lawn chair doing 60 on a gravel road. Chaising down wind as you make the fourth corner on a county square

Also seen one thermal up in a rain storm, when we got down the spoiler bays were full of water.

Interesting thing about BOT's with the tip configuration, is that when they find lift they usually drop their tails slightley, almost a stall, rather than raise the inboard wing.

Here's a pic of one of my old gas bags of about the same vintage, known as a Sailiare. 14' turbulated clark Y - rolled ply fuse.

Oh what I'd do for a Grand Esprit kit or a Sagitta 900

man that thing is huge!

that would be pretty insane going cross country with a sail plane like that.

i havn't noticed the tail drop in a thermal yet, but i also havnt had too many flights on her yet. for the most part it has just been fine tuning until recently. but i will watch for that next time im out.

one thing i did notice though while comming in for a landing head on...it disapears when its pointing at you! all i could see was a little black dot....the windshield. it has such a thin profile that it all but disapears into thin air. i did my best to not take my eyes off it in fear of losing sight of it all together!

here are a couple of pics of it in action

What's your best estimate of average boost duration?

Just built by first glider, its a tom hunt kit that i bashed a bit. I took out the polyhedral, added ailerons, and extended the nose. It has a 60" wing and 360 in^2 wing area. It was meant to come out about 18-20oz, but even with my aileron addition it came out to 17 oz with 4 9g servos, axi 2212-20, 3S 1250 lipo (I think because the weight was calculated with brushed motor and nicads). Here are some pics after i covered it. Its all together and RTF now but hasn't gone up yet, i just finished it a few nights ago.
Here's the link to the website. Not bad for a $20 kit.
