Update...

i got all the covering off, and i have the inner wing panel setup for flaps.

i have re-covered all control surfaces (rudder, elevator, ailerons and flaps) with a neon red. and im re-doing the wings in white. im also going to get one of my buddies with a vinyl plotter to cut out some big maple leafs. so im doing the red/white canadian flag theme

sofar its looking good. the manual is garbage, they pretty much leave you on your own with the build. if i had not already done a build in the past, then i would be having a much harder time with it.

i have all the covering i need, servoes, prop and spinner are on the way. i only need the motor/esc, rx, and extension wires for the servoes

i am also doing some other minor mods while im at it.

the elevator is supposed to be held together with these long heavy steel wires. having that much more weight on the tail isn't a good thing, so i went and got some 3mm and 2mm carbon rods to replace the 3mm, and 2mm steel rods. they are more then strong enough, and they weigh vertually nothing compaired to the steel.

i am using HS55 servoes to operate the flaps and ailerons, and expert mini servoes for the elevator and rudder.

While you have the covering off, make sure the spar web has the wood grain running in the right direction (the grain should be vertical, not length ways). That was a problem on the Great Planes ARF version of the BOT, and it has been blamed for a number of in flight wing failures. (Lead footing the winch was another contributing factor...)

all of the webs have the grain lengthwise.

Then don't overstress the wing! That's the wrong grain orientation. The primary structural purpose of the webs is to stop the top spar buckling towards the bottom spar under heavy load, which means the webs are in compression. Along the grain is about 3 times stronger than across.

Bungee launching wont be a problem, but a full pedal zoom launch is out!

think it could be a problem in normal flight conditions?

this is electric, so launching wont be so stressful on it.

The web is the wood that connects the 2 spars together to form an 'I'
beam.

ok, i see what you mean.

mine doesnt really have an I beam, its actually a 'D' shape. but the grain is still length wise.

Can you take a photo from the back looking forwards, so I can see the spars and whats between them?

i will when i get home, thats a pic i had already taken last night. the back is another solid piece of balsa flush with the top and bottom part of the D. it isn't even hardwood like my Butterfly. and as far as i can tell, its completly hollow...but i will double check when i get home.

On the original BOT, the webs are all balsa. At the center of the wing they're as thick as the spar (3/8 or 1/2 inch I think) and they taper to 1/16 near the tip. It's a good bit of design making intelligent weight reductions where the strength is not needed.

With the wing on the table, the grain should be vertical.

the beam is just as thick of material as the rest, maybe 1/8" thick. the ribs do go all the way through to help form the leading edge.

It looks like they used a solid spar instead of a multiple piece spar made with an I-section. Not as strong for the weight, I would be careful with it at first.

yeah, it is a single piece, and after double checking, it is a harder wood and not balsa which i thought it to be initially.

but i dont plan on using stressful launching methods or extreme moves with it.

progress is slow and painful, this is a lot more work then i thought it would be initialy.

i just need the ESC, RX, and some servo extensions so i can cover the mid wing panel.

i tried to instal the motor today since it came in (man that motor is a beast!). but when i was adding fiberglass to re-inforce my home made motor mount...some of the epoxy ran into the nose and got on the spinner and motor

so i ripped it all out. i'll giver another go tomorrow and be more careful with the epoxy.

also...since i have a lot of extra covering, im going to re-do my Butterfly, and while im at that, im going to add spoilers to it.
