Anyone here fly RC gliders?

i have had a Dynaflite Butterfly for about 5 years now. my step brother gave me a brand new OS20 FS. so i baught a plane that it could power.

she holds a whole 4oz of fuel, runs at wide open throttle for about 10 minutes, or can idle indefinite

last weekend i had a tone of fun with it. it was really hot out, and it was able to hit some sweet thermals.

we had it flying at a decent altitude where it was still easy to see it. once we got it at the hight we wanted, we just let the motor idle the entire time. all of a sudden the plane caught a thermal and in a very short period of time (maybe 30 seconds), it was out of sight.
myself and another guy standing by me lost sight of it for maybe a minute, we caught sight of it when the sun was shinning off the wings while it was going into a dive

at some point it ran out of fuel, but i'm not sure when since i never used it.

after almost a half an hour in the air, my neck was sore, and i baught it down.

i took a break, charged the battery, threw more fuel into it, and went for another flight

its fun because its so different from heli's and most other planes.

after losing sight of it like i did. i changed the colors on the bottom of the plane. one tip is neon yellow, the other is neon orange, and the belly of the fuse is neon red.

Its fun for a few days, then you start getting board, which leads to reckless behavior like buzzing the neighbors cat.

That's what happens with me and foamies. Average life expectancy of one of my foamies is about 4.5 flights

usually a power line, car or sling shot!

I got hooked on electric gliders a few years ago. Brushless and Lipo bats really have made for some awesome performance. Zoom up vertical for a few seconds then go hunting for thermals. Stays up for an hour or more. A good reclining chair, a tall Ice tea...

Haven't done that in a while.

I have a Gabby from Northeast Sailplanes, and a littel Endurance 400 i picked up from tower.

No need to convert. See here:

http://www.espritmodel.com/index.as...ROD&ProdID=2143

This model also doesn't suffer from the weak center joint like the non-electric version. Which is built by chinese slave labor kids.

That Pike and Gabby look nice

but i think i'm convinced with getting the Bird 3000 that thing looks bad ass!! they even added Aileron control!

its strange though, the Bird 3000 has the highest wing loading of the 3, but has the largest wing area, there must be a lot inside that thing

Gliders, Good Change of Pace

Been out of gliders for a while but I have been eyballing this DG1000 by Hobby Lobby

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/dg1000.htm

In the past I have had (1) I have had the dynaflite (glider version of the piece o'cake)???
(3) Goldberg Gentle Lady

They are a blast and are almost indestructable. As long as you remember to turn on the Rec switch before releasing it on the hi-start. Had a friend help me launch a Gentle Lady. He dragged his fingers along the switch as he let it go and because I followed the conventional "Forward on" philosophy in powered aircraft, the switch was moved to off. The glider rolled left, hit the ground and was shredded by corn stubble as it got drug along the ground about 80 feet at 25mph.

I had several flights that lasted 30 plus minutes and one flight that it almost went out of site. I loved days when you really had to work it to stay up and then you would hit that thermal that was a boomer. I would still like to try an Aerotow with another airplane.

I've been flying a thermal glider and a slope glider for many years, bungie launch or winch. Then my son got old enough to learn and we dug out this Goldberg Electra kit I'd had for about 10 yrs, about a 2 meter wingspan, maybe a little more. We built it (mostly me) then worked on mounting the cobalt engine (w/brushes) and 8 C-cell NiCd pack (very heavy). Changed to NiMH, not much lighter. This plane is HEAVY compared to my light thermal gliders (Olympic II). We flew it for the first time last year, all worked flawlessly, and to my big surprise, it catches thermals BETTER than my light, larger gliders. Must be in the airfoil design. Flies much faster than my others, but stays up well. I get about 3 good runups before having to come down if I don't find a thermal. LiPo's and brushless motor someday.

Heli's have taken over my spare time though, more exciting and challenging, but would like to get back into gliders for the relaxation.

^^^ thats exactly why i like them. my heli's have priority, but i love having something different i can fly which is much more relaxing and peaceful, but yet with its own challanges. last week i was really REALLY surprised at what a good thermal can do. previous to last week i had never really tried to look for one, i always just screwed around until i ran out of fuel.

Have you ever actually tried sailplanes? or are you just a troll?

my sailplanes and found helis, the sailplane click in my previuos club
that controlled the club and it's money were ruining the R/C hobby

"a person who is deemed to be despicable or contemptible"

but i dont get it though. you stopped flying sailplanes because of some bad club members?

Sailplanes / Not Gliders

Sailplanes : Let's see : serveral Oly II's, Aquila Grande, Sagitta's 900, 600, XC,
3 BOT's - two Mark's Model version, newone is a DYnoflite, One Sailaire 14' with turbulators and spoileres, countless, Drifters and GentalLadys, one carbon and glass quasor, Several hand Launchers.

Some of the best times in my life, Eagle snatching my 126" Aquila, a 70 mph 4.7mile run with a cross country, Hand launching one of the BOT's and hooking a hat sucker, Having a battery go dead on a OLY II ,and chase it for over a hour to get it back, flying non stop at 9' off the ground in the dark off ground layer. Circling with eagles letting them find the lift, Finding lift in a rain storm- stories go on and on.

Pure speed too- can't touch a good wet ship ballested up.

For basics if you want to learn to hook up to a thermal, turn toward the wing that bumps up " lift side "and punch your way in with a bit of down. To get down learn to roll up side down, or loop and stay up sire down with full down elevator then roll out. Don't smoke the wing's off if you get into a dive. Those cool bressezes you feel comming out of nowhere at the field are sink filling the void left from the thermal.

sweet, thanks for the tips

i was wondering about the Bird 3000...or any electric in general...

if running a lipo setup...how do you make sure, that if you run out of power for the motor, you will still have lots of power for the radio for a long flight?

your BEC will shut the motor down at some point, keeping some power for reciever. Not sure how long the left over lasts, but has always been plenty to get it home again. With either of mine i already had 9 or 10 boosts and a very long flight at that point and am wanting to take a break anyway...
