Need a little help please. No matter my needle settings, the engine runs too darn rich. Tried shaking the fuel jug but its the same CP 30% i use in my 600N with no problems at all. Any ideas?

Thanks

What are your needle settings now? I suggest you go back and close all needles tight. Then re-open the low needle 2 turns. Open the high needle 2 turns. Keep the middle needle shut. This will be rich but is a good start. Start leaning the low end at idle until it satisfies the 3 second pinch test. The high end you will set in flight and by checking back plate temps. It's a sound thing - you'll know when it's right.

The middle needle is only for the transitions. I have mine open about 3 clicks only on the non-pumped version.

HTH

Thanks for the replies. I'm using the pumped version so I'm thinking that may have a different affect than the non pumped. I took the motor out tonight and did a complete cleaning of the carb and associated parts. I will propbably use your advice and start fresh with the needle settings. I had the same thing happen before but it turned out to be the new jug of fuel. I didn't shake it up before fueling. This can't be the case since I am using the same fuel from the same jug in my 600N with no problems at all.

andrew... it did sound like you were getting it right before I left. but if you were hitting idle up, i couldn't really tell if it was going there. good luck

Either way you need a baseline. Whenever my engines are acting up, I close all needles and then open top and and bottom 2 turns. It is rich of course but tends to be pretty easy to adjust from there.

The OS91SZ-HPS only has TWO Needles. One for midrange and another for the Top end adjustment.

The idle screw is not a needle as such and you CANNOT turn this screw more than + or - 90 degrees from the factory default centre setting!!

Looking at the factory default setting of the Idle screw - Assume this position is 12 o'clock, set the idle screw to approx the 1 o'clock position ie turn it slightly clockwise from the factory setting.

Fully screw in the Mid and Top End needles.

Open the Mid to either 1/4 or 1/2 turn (no more) from the fully closed position.

Open the Top End Needle 1 and 1/2 turns out from fully closed.

Use these settings as an approx start point (they should be a little rich but by not too much). If the motor is new, open the top end needle an extra 1/4 turn to be on the safe side.

Note that some even run the mid needle fully closed - so just be aware of that. With 30% your Top end needle should be approx around the 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 turns out from fully closed when tuned.

You are right. Damn, sorry, I was thinking of my 60B Carb that I have on my 50 Hyper (which IS a needle). Your needle setting should get him close...

Thanks fellas,

I'll have to get to the field an see what I can come up with based on your recommendations. I'm hoping that me taking it apart and cleaning the motor may help to. If anything, a little preventative maintenance.
