Align T-REX 600N 700N>Cutting to clear the muffler? |
| Eury rrProfessor | Is everyone cutting the canopy to clear the muffler, or is there some trick I don't know about? My muffler is just barely touching the canopy right near the back of it, and I'm having a hard time forcing myself to pull out the dremel and cut the thing for clearance. If it were a plastic, I'd have carved the hell out of it by now, but I can't bring myself to do it to this nice painted one.I just wish the plastic ones were out, then I could put this one on when it's on the shelf, and I wouldn't be having this crisis!Nick Crego | ||

| mrrc Veteran | What muffler do you have? I have the hatori jk pipe and have about 1/2"

| Eury rrProfessor | I've got the Audacity Pro muffler, and a cheapie Mavrikk. I really want to use the Audacity, it puts out about the same power as the Hatori, but has a better mounting system (unless of course you want it to stick out and clear a cool canopy!), and is a lot less expensive. I used the Mavrikk yesterday, it's smaller, and barely touches the side of the canopy, but that thing is junk, I really want my Audacity on there.Nick Crego | ||

| wolfcbr2003 Senior Heliman | the MPII has plenty of clearance also. | ||

| Eury rrProfessor | Yeah, but if I've got to go drop $70 on a muffler, I may as well cut my $60 canopy. | ||

| LennyDude Senior Heliman | I have the same issue you do Nick. What I am doing is just fly the heli and let the muffler "burn" the paint as it will and then do some minor dremel work.I am finding that the "burn" area is out of site and is a very small area. May not even cut it if it doesn't get any larger but it seems if I do cut it, one will not be able to see it behind the muffler once the canopy is on.Lenny | ||

| Eury rrProfessor | I'd thought about just letting it burn, but I think it's causing a resonance at low throttle that sounds horrible, it sounds like a little Cox .049. It could be the muffler, but I don't ever remember the Mavrikk pipe making that god awful noise in the past.Nick Crego | ||

| tchavei rrProfessor | I'm going to have the same (if not worse) problem like you as I own a 521 muffler (17mm distance between muffler and support end) instead of a 522. Please post your findings (or cutting technique - if you go down that route).Btw, in your case, wouldn't a 2 or 3mm spacer make the muffler move outwards, solving your problem? OS does spacers but their are like 12mm. maybe cutting one in aluminum with about 2 or 3mm would do the trick? (that was what I was planning to do)TonyPS - OS part number 25425600 may help us out. Here is a pic: Tech data:
Depth: 11.6mm Width: 44mm Height: 12mm Center hole width: 18mm Center hole height: 7mm Bolt distance: 37mm

| Eury rrProfessor | I saw that, but there's a couple things I thought about, the big one being with the muffler out that far, it's more likely to get damaged in a crash, or worse, it'd have more of a lever effect, and possibly damage the engine itself. one that's only a couple of MM would be the ideal solution, but I really don't have the resources to make such a thing. Perhaps a thick gasket or some sort would work. I'll have to take a look for something when I go out today. Problemw ill be finding one that can cope with the heat.Nick Crego | ||

| tchavei rrProfessor | it seems that 25mm is the ideal (from a 522 muffler). In my case, distance is 17mm so I would need 8mm to get to standart size. how many mm separates your muffler from mounting holes?Tony

| DS 8717 rrProfessor | QUK has some aluminum exhaust gaskets, you could use a couple of those stacked up to get the clearance. Ricks sells them.DOUGYOU ONLY LIVE ONCE..IF YOU LIVE IT RIGHT THATS ALL YOU NEED | ||

| Barney Key Veteran | Nick,If plan on using the Hatori 522 and have done the canopy mod for the Hi-tech servo's the pressure line fouls the canopy a little requiring a minor trim. | ||

| Barney Key Veteran | Nick... http://runryder.com/helicopter/t348809p1/I noticed on the picture on this thread the pressure line from the exhaust appears to be re-routed using the glow connector holes to take it away from the canopy..would have saved me removing a little with the Dremel | ||

| Eury rrProfessor | That's a decent idea, but won't do anything for me, I'm running a YS, so no pressure line. I've resigned myself to cutting the canopy or letting it burn. I've flown this long never flying good fiberglass canopies, it's time for me to pull up my skirt and just accept that I can't always have a bleach bottle on to fly.Nick Crego | ||

| Eury rrProfessor | Yeah, I think I'm going to, it's just sad that I've managed to fly with beater canopies, or plastic ones for more than a decade, and I'm finally going to have to break down and cut into a nice one that I'd normally use for shelf queen duty.Nick Crego | ||
