So, does it FLY, yet? Still looking for the head to head comparison with a Trex 450 SA/SE....

I got my 450V finally up in the air. Very smooth, easy to work on, easy to set up, and the collective is tight. It flies similar to the 400 XP but tighter control in all areas. So far so fun.

Oh yeah, I added the tail support pipe, it is just the tail boom from the EP Caliber M24.

Any update on how well the 450V flies, or how it compares head to head with the Align Trex 450 SE/SA?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Michael,

I have been using a Hacker A20-6XL with a 37 tooth pinion. This combination works very well. This will give you a head speed of around 2600 which is just about perfect for any type of flying.

Dwight,

Thank you very much.
This combo was my first choice too.
Are you using a hacker x-pro or kontronik jazz esc ?

Cheers

Michael,

I was using the X-30 with no trouble for about 1 year on the 400/400XP. I then switched to digital Futaba 3154 servos and after about 10 flights the speed control BEC failed. I am now using the X-40 pro. It is designed for up to 6 digital servos.

The pinion bore is 1/8 inch. Why do you need 5mm?

you are right - i take a look at the A30.

what gear ratio do you get with 37T - i am not able to verify the indicated 9.8:1 (using a 32T pinion)

I looked at the 450V manual on line to verify that the 450V uses the SAME gears as the EP400/400XP. It does. CA2022 and CA2020.

According to my tooth counts a few years back, with a 37 tooth pinion, you'll have a reduction ratio of 9.51:1.

If you drop a tooth down to 36, you'll end up with 9.77:1

and if you go with a 35 tooth pinion, you'll end up with 10.05:1.

A 32 tooth will get you 10.99:1

A good source of pinions is Robinson Racing 64 Pitch pinions. A large selection of pinions having an 1/8th inch bore. The RC Car guys use them.

Tower Hobbies has 'em.

-----

From my EP 400 Build Thread over in the New and Emerging Electrics page:

15T = 23.4:1
16T = 21.98:1
17T = 20.69:1
18T = 19.54:1
19T = 18.51:1
20T = 17.58:1
21T = 16.75:1
22T = 15.98:1
23T = 15.29:1
24T = 14.65:1
25T = 14.07:1
26T = 13.53:1
27T = 13.03:1
28T = 12.56:1
29T = 12.13:1
30T = 11.73:1
31T = 11.35:1
32T = 10.99:1
33T = 10.66:1
34T = 10.35:1
35T = 10.05:1
36T = 9.77:1
37T = 9.51:1

Here is where the numbers come from:

The motor pinion meshes with a 67 tooth gear. This, in turn, drives a 20-tooth pinion that meshes with the main rotor drive gear which has 105 teeth. The 105 tooth/20T combination is a 5.25:1 ratio.

To compute the overall reduction from the motor to the main rotor:

Divide 67 by the number of teeth on your pinion. Multiply that result by 5.25 to get the total reduction ratio number.

So -- has anyone FLOWN their 450V enough to be able to report head-to-head performance on one of these babies when compared to an Align Trex 450 SE/SA?

I'd be more than happy to do so myself, but at this point, I don't have a 450V and my recent Caliber 4 purchase kind of depleted the new heli budget for awhile.

Just take the time to count the teeth. That 67 tooth fella is a bit tricky when you're wearing progressive lenses!

Once you've got the tooth count, the rest is simple math.

I don't have a head to head against the T-Rex but the 450V is the best flying Kyosho electric yet and no slop has appeared so far. I have about 38 flights at this time.
