What do I do, he ate the big part of a spatula today and he swallowed it whole...He is a weiner dog and i was wondering if a laxative or something would help pass it..?

CALL YOUR VET ASAP, something that big can cause an intestinal blockage

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

Ya maybe if it was a big pork bone it might break down but plastic is bad.

You dog needs help fast.

Thats ironic. I just saw this show on animal planet where a dog swallowed a koosh ball. That actually had to operate on the dog to get it out. First they tried to grab it with these long plier looking things but they couldn't get it. What ended up happening in your case?

Well, I don't think he passed it yet, but my parents are calling the vet as soon as one of them gets home from work...He seems to be acting normal and is running around but I don't think he has crapped it out yet...I hope surgery is not called for because my parents would probably put him down since he is an older dog....

if that causes a backup in his digestive system, he's in for a whole lot of pain.. and a spatula isn't exactly something that's found in a dog's 'normal' diet.... how much of the spatula did he eat? how big of a chunk??

the big part...not the handle...it was one of those white rubbery types that are smaller than the kind that flip burgers but is used to stir things in telfon coater pans....

I can give a little insight into this-My father was a veterinarian-

1-What breed of Dog?
2-How long has it been since he ingested it?

You said it was the soft rubber part of the spatula, correct?

Chances is are if he chewed it fairly well before he swallowed it and it is the soft rubber type it should pass on its own-keep an eye on his stools and be very alert for any blood in them for a few days.
If he seems real lethargic(Lazy) or acting out of charachter it is a cause for concern.
Ya maybe if it was a big pork bone it might break down but plastic is bad.
Bones from chicken or pork can be fatal to a large breed dog-they will swallow chunks of bone and it can perforate an intestine....

NEVER give a dog larger than Shi-Tzu a pork or chicken bone!!
Most any breed larger tends to really chow down in a hurry and wont chew that much.

EDIT-Sorry I didnt see it was a Dachshund- He probably chewed it pretty well so it should pass

Thanks hockeysew, I hope he chewed it up really well..I didn't see him do it, my mom did...Yea, he is always lazy because my parents trained him to be an old persons dog...he used to run with me and fetch and stuff but then I leave for a summer to Philmont scout deal and back to back ffa things and I come back and he just sits there like a lump on a log..

I hope all comes to pass well.....................

You want to hear a funny one- My dad told me a story about a dog that had an intestinal blockage that the owner (Very elderly gentleman) brought in. He took X-Rays and saw the blockage-Thought it looked like a ball of string or yarn.
Pop performs surgery and it is a big wad of rubber bands.
My dad explains to the owner of the dog and the old dude replies that he fed the dog "A rubber band a day". My dad ask's him why and the old guy replies that he cant bend over any more to pick up the stools "But with the rubber bands, I can hook em with a clothes hanger"

My dad advised him otherwise quite firmly...

People never cease to amaze me.

Good luck

Great to hear you recovered it. Make sure to put it through the wash at least twice before you go flipping your pancakes with it.

Funny guy Mark, I glued the peices back together, stuck them in clorox and washed it off, the spatula seems to be holding up well right now while I'm flipping hamburgers on the stove.. jk

Glad it worked out. That would have sucked if you had to consider putting him down like you said earlier. Thats the only bad thing about pets; they don't live very long and you love them as much as people.
