Anyone have a good source for Hirobo Vertol information. I interested in how they accomdated the normal (in real helos) mixing linkages for control etc. Do they use mechanical mixing or relay on the TX? Any on-line manuals for this bird anywhere?

How come in the 50's/60's we could make anything fly? Was the air thicker?

Hirobo use mechanical mixing. Just about every degree of freedom in the swashplates gets input from at least two servos. My hat is off two whover got all the mixing ratios to work.

It really is a fantastic helicopter, i would love to have one but its a bit out of my price range. I was wondering can you fly it around or can it only hover?? tried any 3d stuff with it ??? the blades look really close to each other in the pics, are they ???

The blades mesh between each other. If the main drive belt breaks, they will hit.

I've never seen anyone do more than hover one in person, but I do have an old IRCHA tape showing one in forward flight, and doing touch-and-gos. There is a rumour that someone looped one once, years ago.

I saw one flown several years ago at a fun fly in NC. The pilot not only flew it, when someone in the crowd yelled "do an auto", he emmediatly hit throttle hold and set it down at his feet. After seeing helis with tail booms all these years, it was very easy to get confused about what direction it was going while it was several hundred feet up.

The bird is a Beta 200

The helo is a Beta 200. Really a cool ship with some impressive performance for a "little bird". Unlike the outrageous claims of some of today's VTOL wanna-be makers (Solotrek or Moller Carter Copter) this thing looks and actually flew a good basic envelope. 125MPH cruise 150MPH max 1500 fpm climb 400 mile range on 42 gallons of gas. The disc loading was in the 2.5 lbs. range (so you could auto very well). They built some of the 2 seaters and had designs for a 4 and 6 place exec model but I don't know if they ever built them. The cost was supposed to be about that of a single fixed wing (like a Cessna 182). I am trying to track down more technical info. I have to think though you might get rather "beat up" flying it. Maybe their different method of balancing the blades solves some of these tandem issues (balances from the roots I think).

On the plus side Tandems are very stable.

On the 3D Vertol. Never thought of that. If you changed the belt to an inter-link shaft like a real Chinook you might have something. I don't know if the blades would flex enough to hit the body though? They are mounted at different heights to avoid the Meshing potential. You might also run out of degrees of control (given all mechanical the mixing) to change enough pitch.

And you thought McCulloch only made chain saws:

How come in the 50's/60's we could make anything fly? Was the air thicker?

I've 'thrown together' a twin rotor model out of two Robbe Futura's - no mechanical links to the heads though, just a lot of mixing my the 10X.

I've only hovered it about so far and every time I try and 'push' it, it gets a bit hairy. I've got a couple of gyro's to fit, when I get some time, to see if it balances things a little, and hopefully then start to really play.

I've kept the flybar's, and the spacing between the front paddle and the rear blade is around 7mm so the mesh looks pretty neat in the air. I have got a taller main shaft for the rear rotor but haven't got around to fitting it yet so at the moment the two are on the same plane.

Off course the real problem is that if I can eventually get this thing flying properly then I'll have to build myself a decent body for it - that one in the first post looks really coooooool .

Hi Pave-low,

Here is a link to the Hirobo drawings for their CH-46 (Vertol).

http://warhammer.mcc.virginia.edu/t...o/vertol-1.html

So, were you (or are you) associated with the Air Force Pave-low squadrons? Just curious.

My Gallery was created back in the 'freebie' days and I've never had the chance to pay up to use it again so any pics will have be supplied over E-Mail I'm affraid (not complaining about the charge, and fully understand its significance, please don't turn the thread into a war over the fees ).
