There was a big push here in the States a few decades ago to make the big switch to the (mostly) superior metric standard, but the powers that be wimped out before following through.

Pretty silly, really. In 5 short years we'd've gotten completely comfortable with it. Instead we all have to keep various formulas between our ears and stock double everything in hardware stores. Oy.

On the other hand, an old friend and tool & die guy has pointed out to me on several occasions that the aspect ratios and spacing of some machine screw threads result in SAE having a superior fastening ability in certain particular screw sizes and applications.

Good to see Airwolf! Not many bilinguals out there (other than the old timers in metric countries ).

I am one of the old timers.
When someone asks me how I am, I'm likely to answer "old and crochety"
Pull a fast one and you may see how crochety I get

Slightly off topic, but I guess the cost of conversion would be astronomical (changing speedometers and signs etc). We were lucky and it was done back in the 60s when government could do whatever they fancied. Still, the longer you leave it the harder it will be to change.

The metric system is the way to go, but unfortunately, it's a slow, slow transition. I don't have a single metric tool in my box at work, mostly only 12 point SAE sockets and wrenches. Try going to a hardware store here to buy a door or windows in metric measurements and they wouldn't know what you were talking about. I did see a metric tape measure at Lowe's that I'm about to go get, don't see many of those around. I'm sure eventually the US will be completely converted, domestic cars have gone mostly metric, the aviation industry is starting to, but it is a long ways before it will be everything here.

HK ... In a world of compromise, some don't.

Road signs would cost alot, but it could be started by putting both on there somehow, people will still show up in court trying to beat a 20+ mph speeding ticket by saying they thought the 80 on the sign was mph. But speedometers on cars already rather clearly show km already. Lots of cars get taken to Mexico to sell from the USA, but the ones sold there new only have metric speedometers.

The biggest benefit is mixing fuel. For example a 20% mix you just:

1. buy a 5 litre container (from any hardware store);

2. buy 1 litre bottle of nitro from the LHS;

3. buy a 2 litre bottle of of oil from the LHS

Step one, add 3 litres of methonal to container. step two, add all the oil and nitro and vola!

No calculator required! Unfortunately we need to buy the cool power from the states and it uses bloody empirical measurments so the whole process gets screwed

No, it means I never liked you to begin with. Actually, I do like you, if not for you then this village would need to elect a new village idiot ....... you asked.

I don't know if I should be surprised at your clear and sharp answers now, or not, in light of your ramblings a week ago on tip speed.

Maybe you only focus when you're "agitated" ?

RE: AirWolfRC

hmmm, thought i did? I measured it at 140mm so, 14 cm or .014m?
thats why my final radius length was (.670---EDIT)---indicates have the rotor hub.All this was done in meters to simplify things. I agree, things would be a bit easier if we stayed in kph
hope this helps

I only looked at the .607M

600 blades plus 1/2 of 14cm = .670M

WoW, all of this commotion over a simple statement. I am actually taking an aerodynamics class we speak but that by no means makes me expert. It was a general consensus that transonic occurs between Mach .6-.8 If you go back to my post, I said it APPROACHES transonic. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that the tip speeds can get up to about Mach .5 (which is close to the transonic regime). That's all I was saying. Sorry to make such a big fuss... sheesh

No need to apologize (especially since it's rare these days), that's what I went by .... approaching transonic, so I figured it to be less than but close to 0.8. The fuss was just the trolls coming to feed .... well one troll .... no names, we'll just call him an AirTroll.RC is so much fun!

QuantumPSI,
don't sweat it, You made a statement and someone felt he needed to prove he was smarter (NOT). Some people just can't let it go and we all know who I'm talking about.
I'm sure he will chime in next.

Rest assured.

Almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

The rest are just pretenders.

Almost didn't work too well for the shuttle Challenger, did it ?
Those engineers didn't show any numbers either.

Would you rather be a pilot or a helikrasher ?
