Some of you may know, i parted with my Vigor last fall and purchased a Freestyle (with predator canopy).

Well, i was finally able to buy the rest of what it needed to get airborn. I have a completely different beast. Almost nothing from the Vigor was kept for the Freestyle.

Former Vigor Specs:
YS80 with MP2
NIMH 2300 4.8V pack
G5000T with 8700
JR 8231's on the swash
some pos JR planker servo on the throttle

So, i have gone from an all JR machine and electronics to the following.

Freestyle (with Predator canopy)
YS91 with MP2 AND Dual plug Viper Head
Futaba 9451's on the swash
601 with 9251
4300mah 2S2P lipo with Lipo controller set for 5.5V(Click here)
9253 on throttle with Rev Max

The only thing left from the Vigor is the RX, MP2, and Paddles.

next fall i plan on selling my 10X and getting a Futaba 12mz.

i just took these pics not long ago.

i was planning on slowly upgrading the entire head to metal. one piece at a time.

i would like to fly it like this for a while, then put a metal upgrade on it, then i can see for myself if its worth it, and if i even like it.

i have yet to fire up that motor though, i just got back in from working on my truck. the sun is finally poking through the clouds and its warm out...but now i'm nervous, i dont wanna break anything

well, i just got back from its maiden flight.
i baught that motor back in november, and she fired right up with no trouble at all. insane power!!

a couple minor issues. i had a bad vibration, but i think the blades just aren't balanced, i never checked them because i got them with the heli already flown. i also have a minor leak from the header tank. no biggy.
After i tracked the blades and trimmed the hover a little, i sent it on a full power climb.
WOW. that YS has retarded power!!!! my old vigor with the YS80 would have never kept up if its life depended on it!!

while i was about 100 feet high, i did a single back flip to get the feel of it. again....WOW!!!!

Its collective responce is 500% better then the Vigor, flips faster then i could ever get the Vigor to do.

just an all round great machine. i'm chomping at the bit to get back out there and beat the crap out of it!!

WHOOOOOOOH!!!!!

Fantastic paint Shawn. Glad the new pred is working out for you.

You said you had a vibration, what kind of dampers/#of shims are you running, and what was your headspeed. I am running the really hard dampers from Rick's with 4 shims per side and it will shake pretty bad any where around 1500, 1750 and above is smooth as glass..

i'm not sure what dampeners are in it right now, but i do know that they are a little worn out, there is a little bit of play on the spindle.

but....in the process, my 3rd rev max sensor was ripped off. this is the 1st on this machine, i had 2 go the same way on my Vigor. and i mount the sensors about 1mm away from the fan.

which tells me that:

A) the fan is not balanced
B) The clutch/fan assembly needs to be dialed in
C) all of the above

One of my Buddies is going to help me get things balanced and dial indicated. at $50 per sensor i'm getting pretty frustrated by this. i have never had that revmax work before because the sensors always get torn off

I already have the motor taken out, i'm getting it tuned out on friday, in the mean time i will order new dampeners.

That's awesome. Congrats. I've been reading about your switch from JR to Century for a while, and it's nice to see you have finally flown the freestyle. I'm kind of jealous, I can't wait to finish my P-Max build so that I can try out the .90 feelin'

Nice looking club. If I am ever in the neighbourhood I'll make sure to stop by. Maybe one of your funfly's. Same invitation goes to you, at my club. We have problems with our website, but it's the Mississauga Model Flying Club.....

Hi Shawn,

Glad to hear that you've got it flying. What sort of a vibe are you talking about? Is it high or low frequency?

I had no vibe on that heli. I suspect that the RT blades are not the problem - I usually check them and am consistently impressed by both their spanwise and chordwise balance. Are the paddles balanced and parallel to each other (and with zero incidence at neutral controls)? I did find that it took some time to get the fan dialed in; I got it down to about 1.5 thou (+/- 0.75) at the end of the fan hub.

Happy flying, and I'll see you at the field.

Cheers,
Steve

it seemed like a side to side vibration at the rate you would expect from the main rotor, but in other areas there were signs of higher frequecy vibrations.

it almost seemed to resonate at times. while in a hover, it whole fame would suddenly go into a violent shake, settle down, and repeat itself every few seconds.

also, the rubber tip of the MP2 was shaking around so violently that it was shooting oil in every direction, even onto the pipe itself.

when i setup the paddles i made sure they were zeroed out at 0 degrees pitch with the swash level. but now that you mention it, i did infact forgot to even make sure they were the same distance apart. i'll check that out when i get home, but i still think the clutch needs to be dial indicated. even if it doesn't, i would like ot make sure anyways, thats the 3rd revmax sensor.

well i just finished checking out the paddle setup. i cant believe i missed that. 1 paddle was 5mm further out then the other. i'm sure that would have done something....nothing good i can imagine.

i now have them within 0.1mm of each other

I actually witnessed a flyer who had a similar situation. Lucky thing you got your heli in one peice. My friend's heli shook like that and actually blewup while in flight.

I learned from that experience that once I get that type of vibration, I immediately stop and go through the heli.

yeah, the vibes, didn't seem so bad at first. when i first ran it, the only sign of a vibration was the rubber tip on the pipe flying around. but about half a tank into the flight. a boom support was about to fall off and the vibrations were pretty violent. especially when the rpm was boosted after the sensor was ripped off. so i didn't take any chances and landed as soon as it got that bad.

one time i had a paddle fly off my vigor completely, it put enough stress on the heli to put a slight bend in the main shaft

Geeze, your getting me wanting to get in gear and get mine built up ASAP. Any chance you can take a pic with the canopy off to see how the electronics are mounted?
