I just wanted to say that I have had the pleasure of watching Phil fly his jet helicopter. No only is he a very skilled pilot, he is a great guy, and fun to watch put the jet copter through its paces.

I too believe its 90% the weather in the USA thats holding back the waivers. Im not rich but after attending many yrs of heli flyins I can tell ya there is more than a large number that are rich, and a $6000 turbine to them is like taking my wife out for dinner so it definatly not the moola holding them back. Also I believe for scale flight(the turbine waiver), all that is necessary is hovering along with nose in hovering, FF figure 8 in both directions, one hi altitude climb, and apply all the startup and shutdown rules already in place is nuff. Nobody flying a scaler like a scaler is doing loops and rolls thats just silly! A lot of fellas have the patience and skills to buy and build beautiful scalers but its going to take some more time(probably sim time), to make them great pilots as well. I think between the weather and low flying time skills its going to be a slow crawl seeing the turbines blossom. Ive seen a LOT of scale guys who could just barely hover so................................. If I could afford a turbine id sure as heck be doing it and I can do stationary rolls, autos, and flips and wouldnt be afraid to do it on a turbine. IF I was only rich, but Ill have to settle for spectater, bummer............

Turbine Costs

I do beleve that the cost of turbine heli's will keep it out of the hands of many, I too at one point said that i would never spend 2K for a model and my last vario ec135 cost me close to 4K when finished. My current tow cobra when finished will be around 3K. How many flyers are spending 3 to 4 K for pod and boom heli's and have a couple of them sitting around.

Think about this, you will be saving some cash with a turbine heli!
you may think i am crazy! but you will not need
HH Gyro 400+
Govener - 200+
muffler - 125+
Fancy Purple and Carbon stuff 200 to 400 +
20 to 30 % fuel 15 to 20 a gallon @ 2x a week = 1,000 a year for fuel @ 26 weeks
glow plugs every 20 flights
Upgrades every other month from some manufactures
Cleaning solutions every week.
ETC.....
it all adds up

I was gonna build the Hirobo daulphine with onboard start this would have been a 5K + model.

Grant you 5k is a lot to drop in one shot but we are coming close to that with what we are flying now with glow.

Dang you Alan, don't be trying to justify the cost of a turbine to me. I sure the heck don't need the help. Only thing holding me back is that I sleep next to her at night and she could do quite a bit of harm to me if she saw a $5000 bill

Yes Peter, I am a turbine CD. Last year I asked the AMA not to list me as a turbine CD anymore because I was having problems with conflict of interest. Customers were beginning to insist that I would sign them off if they bought an engine from me. The AMA was not asking me to be off the list but I did not want to be put in this position. I have several JetCat Reps that are turbine CDs so I would refer customers to them. By the Reps handling this absolved me of this situation.

Now that the Helicopter waiver program is active, I am administrating the proficiency test again so we can get this going. However, I will not sign off ANYBODY just because they bought an engine from JetCat. I have been working far too hard to jeopardize JetCat or the AMA with signing off someone that is not capable.

Bob, ok thats good to know. The reason I asked is that I know someone who wants a waiver but simply cant do the loops and rolls. He has been flying scale for a number of years and is very well known for his superb models. I will ask him to talk to you as I know that you will lend a sympathetic ear, but I will tell him that if you dont think he is up to the mark, you wont sign him off.

Just to ensure there is no conflict of interest, he has a PJ-W turbine so if you do sign him off, its because you think him capable

I'll suggest to him he talks to talk to you a little later on.

Waivers

Peter

Read your comments. AMA should listen, you make some very good points that should be considered.
Got my Pilot's questionnaire complete; looking for a TCD in my area.
I'll be going to Las Vegas fun-fly on 31st, maybe make some contacts and find a builder for my project.

Thanks again,

Arkangel

Peter & All

Just a note that if you know of a pilot outside the U.S. that wishes to fly in the U.S. they will have to present a Letter of Proficiency from their national organization stating that they are skilled in operating a turbine engine. Also keep in mind that regardless of what they operate the only turbine heli unit that is currently AMA approved is the HP5 and PHT3 units. No other units can be operated in the U.S unless approved by the AMA. So in a nutshell....foreign pilots O.K. but must present L.O.P. and must comply with ALL AMA rules including type approval.

This brings up a very good point..What about the guys that have or get the waiver and either have a JetCat HP5 or not..but show up to the field or a contest with another turbine and use the waiver to try and fly it? The average contest director doesn't know the difference between the HP5 or PJW or what have you. I have even heard an individual go as far to say "well I will just stick my HP-5 sticker on my Jakodofsky unit and no one will know the better!" How is this particular situation covered? Also I'm curious on how the AMA is going to handle people assembling their own heli turbine units and gearbox configurations and what they are doing to get those certified. Any takers? Bob maybe you can comment on this with your previous jet airplane experience? Thanks

Yup,

That is a problem. Club executives will need to be vigilant that the rules are followed and someone is knowledgeable to act on them. As for events the CDs will be responsible to ensure the AMA regs are followed. As for putting a HP5 sticker on another unit.....well that becomes a legal issue. Those wanting to go through the process of assembling there own unit? Just click on the AMA documents outlining what is required to get a simple gas turbine ( one off ) certified - will not be easy. As time goes on - more and more units will be seen by modelers and as with jets guys will no when the wool is being pulled over their eyes. In the meantime, you will need to educate yourselves if you plan on organizing an event ( whether you ever plan on owning a turbine heli or not )

Dean I'm not talking even about assembling the turbine itself (such as the Wren-54) what I'm talking about is the gearing from the turbine to the mainshaft...isn't that part of the certification process? Meaning if you by an approved AMA turbine and go install it in your machine...great your covered and your playing by the rules. However if you go and take apart a units gearing and modify it or reassemble it to fit your particular applications needs..shouldn't it need to be recertified by the AMA cause you re-engineered it?

Correct...for helicopters its whole deal. Turbine unit with gear box need to be approved. Presently it appears we are stuck with the layout that manufacturers provide us and only through the use of secondary gearboxes ( ie as shown by Vario for the EC135 fenstron unit ) can we manipulate where the tail drive would go.

Jetcopter SX

I just put the maiden on my Jetcopter SX and I'm trying to wipe the smile off my face. I may be a planker (reference Peter Wales original post) but I think we can all get along. Everyone needs a turbine heli!!!

i think the idea of getting a turbine heli is great. planning on it when i make the last alimony payment next year.

but, i would rather loose all my helicopters than lose my truck!

best world is a few helicopters and a truck.

Turbine Waiver

I was just wondering about the turbine waiver. Why would you need to be able to do a loop? I have 3 helis 2 of them are scales and I I'm not into doing loops I just enjoy flying patterns and normal stuff not 3D? guess I'm just not looking to push the envelope with a heli that I have put a million hours into. Maybe it's me but I don't think a loop is a skill everyone needs to be qualified
