A friend races motorcross. He has a "pit bike" which is a 50cc class motorcycle. The motorcycle started off as a Honda 50. The engine has had a "big bore" kit installed to increase the size to over 100cc's, and suspension has been completely replaced. He just mentioned he instlalled a $400 carb. And just today his $250 billet short throw throttle came in via UPS. I asked him how much he got in this motorbike. He said almost $5000 which includes the stock bike. And get this. His 26 years old, and 220 lbs. I must say the bike is very fast. And races on a 50 class pit bike. I watched videos and they all have a lots of fun. I'd like to try it one day when i get 5K to drop on a motorbike. What ever floats your boat...

You've made a wise choice Grasshopper, but some here will say you'll end up at some non-existent mythological hell as a result. Don't get 'em started -- and more importantly don't believe 'em! Fly On, Kona Brudda!

flying brings you closer to god doesn't it? So why bother with church...This hobby is cheaper than some I have tried such as snowmobiling 200 bucks worth of gas in 1 weekend not to mention the intial cost of sleds(would gladly give up the sleds for alot of better weather to fly)

Sorry, No frequent flier miles available at this time

Why is this hobby such a money pit?

I have thought so too over the years. The price for some parts when you crash are horrendous. I was looking at a clutch for my Hirobo Schweizer 300 the other days and the bloody thing is almost $50.00 USD! For what?---It is a piece of metal. By comparison the clutch for my Raptor 60 can be had for less than $20.00 USD. Well I guess the hobby is what you make it. If you don't crash a lot and you are not into any unnecessary aluminum and carbon fibre upgrades then it isn't too bad.

I always thought helis were expensive until I got into giant scale planes. Then I had to go out and buy a bigger vehicle to transport the beasts in. Then I got a bigger plane, and now I have to buy a trailer. So, you're looking at $4k-$6k for a plane, then 20k for the vehicle to haul the $2k trailer.

Helis were cheap in comparison. At least fuel is cheap, runs on pump gas.

No, I do helis, actually I fly my helis more than the giant scale stuff. It's a lot more convenient to throw a heli in the car than to go through the trouble of getting an airplane that's 8 feet long and 8 feet wide to the field.

I used to be into racing motorcycles at the track, now thats real expensive. Blew hundreds of dollars on tires in one weekend and that not even counting a crash. Plus, if you do crash, insurance won't cover it and your looking a couple of grand repair bill if its bad enough. Hmm, $60 dollars worth of fuel and maybe a couple hundred dollars on a really bad weekend isn't so bad after all.
