Fantastic photos! and you're taking those amazing shots from an electric! Just brilliant. Screen-saver-me-up-Scotty (with your kind permission of course). I saw a photo of your Joker a while back, is that Minicopter in Germany that makes them? I just have to get one of these before too long (that or a Mikado Logo 20/24) - any comments which way to go? Also do you have a photo of your latest camera setup that you'd be willing to share?

Wow, that's an amazing testament to the balance of that machine. If you could only see what I've put myself through to get a heli mount for an X-Cell to behave itself - I've ended up with something almost as engineering - intensive as the rest of the helicopter combined - more so at a guess if you take the electronics into consideration - can't you tell I'm itching to show it off - I reckon there's about 6 man hours left in it - and I'm stuck at my desk 18 hours per day surrounded by phones and blinking screens - bummer - no matter I'm sure it will pass.

I've just been hounding Gerd Guzicki for details and pricing on the new Maxi Joker - their site says they designed it specifically in response to requests for camera-carrying ability. I'm begining to think he's got a deal some time between now and the summer - well we do tend to have an 8 month pause here inbetween "summers" where the outdoors becomes a waste of space - anyway, can you believe he's been at work answering my mails at 12:30am in Germany

I had a EP Concept SR (several of them actually - 'cos they kept burying themselves in the dirt through non-pilot-error) - that's before I viowed never again to touch anything made by Kyosho (I had several Concept .46 VRs too for similar reasons - melting plastic clutch bells) - funny how economical a single X-Cell 60 can seem after that - err, I digress, basically, however terrible the EP Concept, I always loved the electric heli flight thing and can't wait to get back into it - these new German units look like a complete blast, just the sound of them on the MPGs is out of this world - and then there's your results too to cap it off. Thinking about it, I was all set to build a hovercraft when I side-tracked to look-up electric helis and found Risto Koiva's pages with details of his Logo 20 and his heli-camera/telemetry project - and that's what got me started on this whole thing - it's just in my nature to take things to extremes. http://www.mh.ttu.ee/risto/rc/logo20/wvideo/index.htm

I've got this image in my mind of you treking up those Montana slopes with a heli and a few KilloWatt hours strapped to your back - man, you're living the life of my wildest dreams - I'm there - vicariously I think Flyboy put it so well (btw your photography is beyond cool - that shot of the Jaegermeister & Red Bull in the snow just does it for me) - you need someone to carry that heli by any chance? - I'll even get the beers in, you only have to ask...

Good night,

Julian.

Julian,
I'm excited to see your x-cell.
I'm thinking of trying a gasser backup, but still kicking around different platforms.

The Maxi seems like quite the setup swinging 800 S blades.
Gerd recommended sticking with the Joker CX for ~1kg payloads.
Plus I can swap out the landing gear in a few minutes and stick bang the Joker when the Fury is down for mx.

"Jaegermeister & Red Bull in the snow"

I remember that day...but the details are a little hazy ;-)

cheers..jeff

flyboy,

I have a yellow canopy with a few red Freya stickers on the bottom for orientation. I'm going to replace the horizontal fin with a stock Rap60 fin painted yellow on the bottom for tail visibility.

I also have the original white canopy that I'm going to send off for a custom 3 color fade with a company logo on it. Not to sure how much more weight this may add though.

Today was a rare blue bird so the Joker took a quick trip to the "Crown Jewel of the Continent" and filled a flash card.

Cheers...Jeff

These were taken this afternoon from a Long Ranger full sized helicopter. I thought that you might enjoy seeing them. I have DV & Quicktime footage of flying Under & Over The Golden Gate Bridge. It was a blast. See my gallery for a few more pictures and contact info if you are interested. It was a blast!
Enjoy,

The hat's off jamthomas, that's an outstanding photo, jeff what can I say - screen saver 2.

fitenfyr - I can categorically assure you that jeff's mount will not calm a freya or anything else with an IC engine in it - that electric Joker of Jeffs has to be just as slick as a greased weasel to do what it does - he's probably be able to fly circuits with a dime balanced on it's edge on the lateral tail fin ; )

Nice compositions Flyboy!

Those shots really work well.

It was a clear day in Oregon too.

I've been flying the DV camcorder the last 2 days, trying to work on getting steady and avoiding my over-correction sway. The autopilot really helps but when it's foggy, my autopilot doesn't do very well.

Keep it up

Hello again Flyboy

Great shots !! Same for Jeff.

I may have ran this one by you before, obviously you have good light in the majority of your pics,.

What manual settings do you use on the small 30 mount.

I'm assuming you guys use a fast shutter, if so what is it and if you can the other settings.

I'm nearing the end of my prototype mount for testing on a Sceadu, similar to others with a few tweaks really, can't wait to test but I'm waiting on some more vibration mounts.

Cheers

Lee

I have been experimenting recently. To be honest photography is not my back ground so I am not that knowledgeable. I have been having great luck with setting the camera in manual mode, set to infinity, I choose shutter priority, and set it to 1/500, the ap. automatically adjusts to what ever is needed. You can also "bracket" the shots pushing & pulling by one stop.

How to build the cameraholder?

Hi again Jeff and Flyboy!
I do admire your very good pictures, but I still dont get it, I am a bit slow, how to build the holder, and how to mount the servo to activate the camera. Could you please write a howto message including pictures and if possible drawings so "we who struggle" could be able to copy your designs?
Thanks a lot!

Nice looking shot! I see Mount Hood. This is the Mountain that I learned to ski on.

Your shots are turning out really well!

Keep up the impressive work. It is always nice to see a different perspective of a familiar place.

Norski,

I am sorry I do not have a bunch of time at the moment, so pardon me if I am a little brief. Look in my gallery for the several shots of the camera holder & mount. This is an early version, but it should give you plenty of ideas.(Yes, those ski pictures were taken @ Hood)
The servo needs to be mounted so that when it is activated it simply pushed the shutter release. For the first year I was simply attaching the servo trigger to the camera with servo(double sticky) tape. Once you have completed that come up with a creative way to mount the camera to the helicopter.

Our friend, Pal Rotor and I have well discussed this subject on the forum. Try a search.

Here is where a creative approach will come in handy, as most helicopters vibrate. Cameras, and good pictures, hate vibration.

I am off to "chase the money."

Hope this helps.
