e-Ikarus Piccolo-Eco 8/16 > Brushless Motor for Eco-8

Has anyone tried using a TRex brushless motor (from either the 450 or 600) in an eco8? Wondering if it's do-able with the right pinion since they certainly seem to be a LOT cheaper than the H8/H16 Ikarus is offering.

Any other suggestions for a decently priced Brushless motor/controller combo for the eco8 are more than welcome!

Thanks,

Steve

Motor

The motor to run for great performance and price is the Century 550 plus or the Z20-1500 outrunner. Runs very cool on 3S and 23 tooth gear or 4S / 20 tooth. Century is 99 dollars or 109 for the Z-power.

Hey Steve,

For motors under $100.00, I've used a few of the
HiMax models with very good results.

Try the HB3630-1500 and 20 tooth for 1800 rpm
and HA3618-2300 and 14 tooth for 1800 rpm

I've been flying the 3618 myself for over a
year now, works very nice. For good performance
at 1800 rpm or so you woun't need a heat sink.
though if you'd really like to push it, (I've been
running an 18 tooth on mine and then governing
down), its easy enough to put on a heat sink and\or
a cooling fan.

Mine certainly has good 3D spirit set up this way..!

Think a few of the new Great Planes Ammo motors will
work well too. Not at all expensive; just picked up
a 36-50-1500 and a 36-50-1200 myself though have yet to
try them.

There are quite a few others in the out runner market
these days too but keep in mind if you really
want the thing to fly very well you'll need a min
of 1300rpm/v for a 3S setup. of course if you go to
4S power, you can have a slower rateing, something
like that new Hacker A30-8XL (I think), around
1100 rpm per volt , would be a sweet motor, 23-24 tooth
pin.

Oooow -- BTW, Dont'touch an outrunner type
unless there is a fan attachment (or included)
with it. Also the The ALign T-Rex 600 motor
would be an interesting choice. A little
heavy for this application but should work.
I think start with a 20 tooth on 3 S .

Outrunner

The motors I listed are much more powerful than the himax 3630-1400 or A30-8XL.
I Ran all these motors and The Z-power 20-1400 run better makes more power and runs cooler, has a fan too. The Zpower is 43mm in diameter outrunner and works well in the governor mode on CC controllers or the Jeti spin. The vertical performace with Z-power is about as fast as all out forward flight.
The Hacher A30-8XL is an outrunner with a fan.

Series

3S packs are 3 lipo cells (3.7 volts) wired in series to make 11.1 volts. 3S will fly the Eco8 well enough, but 4S is better.

My logo 10 uses 6S or 22.2 volt packs

P refers to the number of cell in parallel. 2P would be 3.7 volts but double the capacity.

A 3S2P pack consists of 6 cells, two groups of three in parallel.

Understand your frustration. You say you
Quote
still cannot make it start.
What happens? Are you saying the motor will not turn? When you plug the battery in to the ESC do you get any tones from the motor? Do the servos move when told to, or is it totally dead?

The gear you have should work, so if you post some more details, I'm sure the combined talents of RunRyder can get it going for you.

Eco 8

I have built 3 Heli for the last year and a half, but have not fly one yet or should I say no flight time.

here are the mechanics:

1. Eco 8 kit
2. Jeti Phasor brushless motor- 30/3
3. Jeti 40 Amp Advance Plus controller
4. 2 Hi-Tec HS 85 BB servos
5. 1 Futaba S 3102 servo for tail rotor
6. Auto rotation gear
7. Pre assembeled canopy
8. Pinion gear 24 tooth, 5 mm
9. 8 cell 8N-2000 RC battery
10> gyro 401
11. futaba 148 on receiver

Im so new to this hobby and never understand the language at first and kind of gren to this..
I manage to start the motor just now but only for 4-5 seconds only then she only purrs for a secon and purrs again for another second..the battery have 8.5v on it.

What you're describing there- with the motor pulsing on and off, sounds like your battery is low. 8.5V is pretty low for an 8 cell nicad battery- freshly charged they're more like 11 or 12V (that's unloaded).

Stick the battery on charge and try again!
