Most fliers seem to flip forwards (push elevator forwards) while piro-flipping.
However, do some fliers pull back elevator? Pros/cons???

If you lag in collective response on forwardflip PFs, it moves heli away from pilot. Lag in collective on backflip PFs moves heli towards pilot.

Actually, I pull the nose when upright and push it when inverted---and start the flips when the heli is nose in. In that setting the heli is pulling up and away both times. I guess everyone has their own way, but I "fly" the heli when piro-flipping---meaning it's not a rote maneuver rather synched by the nose.

I can see one con of backward piroflipping
Many start the piroflip tail-in as that is the position that is best under control. If you then do a backward flip plus upward elevator to keep height, you end up closer to yourself which will make slight errors (eg slightly too much elevator) very visible. If you do forward flip you will end up slightly further away which is less visible.

I can see one pro
If you start piroloops, the backward piroflip one is the one you need.

Good thought. Actually, some (many?) are nose in when they start their flips---so similarly, nose up will be going away from you. Same idea though, the safety of nose down or up will depend upon how you start. BUT, if you're close to the ground and go nose up, the tail sticks out further than the nose from the main shaft (piro point) and you'll have less ground clearance. So in that case, tail up is a better start. At some point, he'll probably find it useful to not care---do them either way.

Thank you guys,

I tried doing piros(on the sim) doing them in all orientations including piro right and left, and pushing and pulling elevator. And any other combo (e.g., pushing elevator to start and when inverted pulling elevator). I never thought about mixing the two.

Safety or crashing is not an issue for me at this time as the heli is three mistakes up, not on the deck near me :=)

Thanks for the ideas,

Ken

Animation created of this; http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/...ro_backflip.zip

Funny, when I do piro foward flips they drift toward me, not away. Wonder if it'll be the opposite if do piro backflips.

And where do you start the piroflip, nose in or tail in?

Tail-in of course.

Maybe it's just from starting further out, settling into a rhythm and bringing it closer on purpose to say 20ft just of the deck.

Btw, even Szabo does this, well he starts at the distance he wants to himself but a bit higher up then comes down.

Hoever he never does low piroflips for very long, say 10-15 secs. Can't he keep going indefinitely?

Though from experience whenever I get low, it's terrifying alright. One hair's thickness of a slip & it's over. Right on the edge of insanity! No wonder it's called chaos.
