Airtronics Stylus Tips & Tricks

I've graduated to an Airtronics Stylus. Time for this old dog to learn new tricks.

If there's anything useful you'd like to share about programming or using these fine, fast radios, please feel free to do so here on this thread.

Thanks.

The first thing to do is to create a model and save it to the 50 Model memory card. This model should have the necessary switch assignments and default programming to allow you to set up any model you want.

Hey Peter,
Starting with one of the Avant models I left on there should get you pretty close to a decent starting setup, at least for eCCPM. The Reflex model is setup as a standard mix model.

One big thing to remember is that in eCCPM mode, the normal EPA screen becomes your Swash AFR values for the aileron, elevator, and pitch channels and the CP-EPA screen values are the ATVs for those channels.

The other thing is that there is no equivalent to reversing the sign of a Swash AFR value. Instead, you have to experiment with servo channels, channel reversal, and back vs front eCCPM mode selection to get everything going in the right direction. This was only an issue for me on my original Avant setup with the leading edge main blade control which required downward swashplate movement for positive pitch.

Thanks Terry and John. That's a good start.

I've been poring over the manuals for the last week while Bobby in Anaheim does the gimbal swap (to Mode 3) and tunes it up. Selena called today and it's on its way back now along with two new modified 516Z rx's. I can't wait to do the new setups on my existing birds. It's gonna be a busy weekend!

Keep the tips and tricks coming, fellas.

Mode 3 is actually the opposite of Mode 2 -- a swap of both stick's functions.

My reason for choosing Mode 3 two years ago will haunt me like a bad joke for the rest of my RC days. I've heard of guys switching to Mode 2 but not me; not worth the risk. My muscle memories are forgetful enough as it is.

Mode 4 is the opposite of of Mode 1, which is elev & rudder L, throttle & ail R. Apparently there's a style of plank flying for which that setup is beneficial, but certainly for helis the cyclic should be on one stick whether in Mode 2 or 3.

Alan Jr told a story last weekend about flying a Mode 3 tx in Europe recently. His RC stick talents apparently include ambidexterity as well. Pretty amazing.

That's the mode that Mike Mas flies. He used to call it "commode".

If Alan can fly Mode 3, that's saying something!

When the Infinity 1000 was designed the programmers gave us the capability of doing all 4 modes. The Stylus will do it too.

'Commode,' haha. Glad to see that not only am I not alone, but in good company as well. Any idea how Mike Mas ended up flying Mode 3?

Heh - I ran reversed pitch curves with my Hornet for some time before learning to swap the aileron and pitch servo channels for the down swash = positive pitch config.

Careful about your normal mode throttle curve as I believe the idle-up curves (including throttle hold?) are dependent on it as I think JKos and a buddy of mine learned - I forgot the details but my buddy was having some issues with his Trex until I snooped around and found the cause remembering a similar issue that JKos had.

What heli is this going into? I ask because I had some issues with the RX battery not being up to the speed of the receiver in PCM on a ccpm avant. I pretty much had to upgrade to an arizona regulator with 4800 peerless battery. I love the way the radio works! Very smooth.

Two for now -- an R50 and a Rex450se (pics in gallery). Two planks as well.

The R50 runs off a 3s/1320 LiPo via a 5.4v uBec, no power problems there (and 6-8 flights/charge). It previously had a Futaba R138DP PCM rx. It'll get an ATX 92185 PCM rx.

The Rex has exhibited no problems using a Futaba R146iP PCM rx. I'll try a modified ATX 92516Z FM rx (same as Alan Jr uses on his 450se's). If there's glitching I'll try a Berg 7P.

Yeah, the fast transmitter is very fun. It does change the timing of your "moves" but it's so solid that the transition is quick. I particularly like how the transmitter speed makes it easier to control "bounce" in maneuvers, lets you get closer to the ground with more confidence, and everything feels more solid somehow in any situation. I too went to 6 volts on the servos---amplifying the speed and feel.

One "tip" is that I think it's easy to push the pulse width outside of the 1-2.0 range with what seems like a pretty small centering adjustment and reasonable EPA's. You probably keep all the centering things at zero anyway, but if not...

Look at the gyro gain on the brain box directly if you're using a 611 say, since I think about 55% on the radio translates to a 35% gain.

OK, that's pretty random. Enjoy!

Nothing. I don't like knobs and sliders being active for any purpose because then you always have to worry about if they are in the right place. I keep my setups, in terms of switches, knobs, and sliders, very simple. The less things that do anything, the better.

I think I'll power up a second rx connected to a high torque servo linked to a slowly rotating pinwheel-style thermos holder. At the end of each tank, as I'm walking back to the bench, the slider will let me tip the thermos to pour yet another coffa cuppy into my lipo charging mug. It'll be a big-time time-saver.

I'll be able to use the time normally wasted on coffee-pouring to instead crank more fuel into my birds, eat a glazed doughnut, or adjust the settings on my tx.

In this thread from the above list the subject is the current draw of digital servos on CCPM helis. Having already experienced and solved a similar problem with an insufficient amperage causing low voltage lockouts with Futaba gear (after switching my R50 from 9252's to 94758's), I'm a little concerned that the problem will crop up again now that I'm driving these servos a wee bit faster with this Stylus via a 92185 PCM rx.

The battery on this R50 is now a 3s/1320mAh TP lipo regulated by a UBEC. The R50 is not a CCPM bird but the servos do draw considerable power.

Do our resident Airtronics experts concur that this 5.4v UBEC is up to the task of driving a 401/9254, a 9252 on throttle and three 94758's on this non-CCPM heli -- or should I switch to a Duralite or Fromeco pack & reg?
