most of us just build our own from brakeline tubing. i have never done up any drawings or plans for any of mine, most of us i think just eyeball it. Jesstr i think had a jig he uses. anyway, i use pictures from various angles to determone the dimensions.

The lower skids are meant more for personnel travel & landing on cement or tarmack. The high skids are the workhorse bush version to keep the tail out of the brush. I have detailed pics of the JetRanger on a CD if anyone wants it I'll send it out to them shipped for $10.00

Most of what I've seen are lower skids on military versions. Why? Not sure. Maybe to make embarkation easier for troops, not that it carries many. Maybe that's what bell equiped them with initially. I believe the higher skids were to minimize the risk of ground objects poking through the bottom of the helicopter. I witnessed a stick doing just that on an OH-58 once while we were on manuvers.

I see that Gyan beat me to the answer.

High Gear...

Not sure where I read it, but it seems the higher gear was on the later versions to get more clearance for the t/r above the ground, and made it less likely to walk into...makes sense to me!!! That could leave a mark..

Glad you like the JR collection....

Sorry doorman, I don't think so on both counts, skids are not dependant on the manufacturer's date, (for one thing they can be swapped back & forth) & the tail rotor is not that high that it wouldn't eat you up if it got a chance.(I used to work on them)

No Problem

gyan

Not a problem, but I did read it someplace during my research for the blue an silver JR.... not that it was correct, but if I find it I will send it to you...
But I will take your word for it....

Wow, good link Rckfsh, didn't even think to look there. Live and learn too... went to have a look at the 206B3 specs for fun and discovered that I had no idea the Bell 427 and 429 even existed!

okay here's what the deal on skids are, the millitary uses the low skids because it is easier to hide a heli in trees and such if they are lower to the ground. also keeping them covered when out in the field is easier and more practical and doing preflight inspections are easier without the use of a ladder or tall personel
in the civilian world, they come as options. most executive birds are nicer to pax if they dont have to hike it into the cabin thats waaay up there and the same for medivac birds. the high skids do handle rougher and uneven/unprepared terrain better.
i personally prefere the high skids on most machines except for the bo105 and bk117. i think they look ugly on those two machines. everything else looks better with the high skids to me.
if i were a heli, i'd wanna be high.........sorry

A tubing bender helps.

Also you can fill it with sand but I bent mine using a bender and some blown up close ups on a copy machine from the three views.

I got a tubing bender at NAPA for like 19 dollars.

Here's the 3 views of all the skid configurations if you need them.

You can make a decent tubing bender out of a bolt and a couple of fender washers.

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

thanks for all your suggestions!

For painting the plastic clear fuselage, I do not have access to a professionnal painting air brushed or car painting system. I will use spray bottle.

I thought of using the Krylon Paint that seams to have a quick and nice result. no primer, no sanding and dry in 15min. I used it on my Flush pool drain ABS tips that goes up the grass and go evacuate water in the street. it was dry in time and seams to be scratch resistant. Will it be good for fuselage... don't know. Do you have other brand of paint to suggest?, except Tremclad that is a total horror to use on plastic. I love the engine enamel that is really strong, but the colors are limited...
