Worst so far was when I was sitting next to my Trex making some adjustments when I bumped the idle up and forgot to hit the throttle hold before starting. The tail blade put several cuts in my ankle before I got her shut down. Needless to say I won't be making that mistake again.

I stepped on a #11 xacto blade. Went in deep enough that when I went to pull it out, I could not really be sure what direction to pull it in.

My Concept 30SR was having some radio glitting so I started it without the main blades on. As I was adding power it glitched... full power and full right cyclic. I reached and grabbed the tail rotor gear box, and as I was trying to pull the fuel line off, The machine reversed directions and lurched. In all this comotion,I accidentally extended my right index finger. The tail rotor blades cut my finger diagonally below middle and first joint. 10 stitches. It was the first I ever saw what a moving tendon looks like. The doc that stitched me up called in interns so they could see it move too.

I ordered a JR PCM 10S the next day.

Funny you should ask. Only two days ago, I was flying the 450SE in my indoor shop and getting a bit cocky. Well, long story short, had multiple blade strikes to the kneecap. 13 stitches later, I am back flying in the same shop only more cautiously. Funny though, when I was checking in to the ER (at midnight), the nurse asked me why I was there. I replied that I was involved in a helicopter accident which made her very perplexed for a moment. The doc too. Note to self: these fun flying machines can turn into ATTACK HELI'S in a New York second.

Not heli but plane.

I was throwing a zagi and the prop caught my finger.
I kept flying until I realize blood was all over my Tx, very deep cut.
Didn't hurt at all.

I burned the soft fleshy skin between my thumb and forefinger on both hands with touching the hot muffler within couple of days. You would think I would have learned after the first time!

hey.

new member here.

The worst (so far) is when I took my walkera 60 up to takeoff speed to see if I have a stable hover. It hovered alright, and went left quite quickly.. straight for me. No time to get out of the way so I turned to my side. I got whacked in the arm and hand. The arm was fine because I wore a heavy jacket (this is a MUST when I fly from now on), but the hand is mainly bruised with a two inch scratch on it.

As I was standing up just after plugging in the flight batteries on my Venture 50 (electric conversion) I must have hit the throttle, the main blades (600 Vblades) started up against my leg. Had 2 good whacks before the main shaft bent, the main gear was striped over half of its circumference, the spindle and the fly bar were bent.
I had 2 small scrap marks and a massive bruise for over a month.
Luckily this was on startup and I would hate to think what would of happened if it was up to speed.
Needless to say any time I am near the heli I am in throttlehold.

You never forget the hard earned lessons.

Airplane

I have flown airplanes for 30 years and helis for about 6 years. No injuries until about 2 years ago (on a plane). I know this is a heli forum but my point is, don't relax around these things, they bite and can bite hard.
I was helping a friend with his Trainer .40 powered plane and for some reason felt compelled to reach around from the front of the plane and adjust the needle valve. I heard a little "zing" and look down to see a large cut on my hand. I knew better than to try to reach around a turning prop too!!! It took a few stitches but was not too bad. I got complacent around the planes and got bit. Same thing can happen with the heli. At this point I am very wary of them. But at the field I see people flying 50s and 90s very close to themselves and other people. If for some reason the tail rotor lets loose or the radio glitches, you could really hurt someone.

I saw a guy get hit in the back by a Trex 450 and it put some nasty look scrapes and bruises on him. So even the smaller helis can hurt ya!

Good post btw. It has brought my respect up another notch for these things!

Over thirty years, seen quite a few !Sorry for the diatribe - But :

I've been very lucky myself, but always seem to see the same accident repeat itself over and over and over -- reaching over the top to get to the needle valve.

You can drill it and drill it and warn about it - and they will continue to do it.

We have one senior experienced flyer who's been stiched at least 3 times that I know of and he still does it! It's the first thing I teach, and the 1st' thing I'll interject my self when I see it.

Only accident I had myself, is when a rossi fractured a 1/2 a blade pierced my coat stuck and just above my collar bone " I was standing 30 feet off to the right side! " and a brush with a nastey .049 that left me with a series of paper cuts. Back fire's even with a cotton glove under a welding glove still hurt like bejesus and can break a finger!

Sad part is the noise it makes's when we hear it and most importantly is when you hear the awful noise "go immediatley and lend assistance" !

Many time's I've seen this occurance and fellow flyer's stand off and watch the poor fellow fend for him self! Trying to shut down - then the O I'm Ok !

Which leads me to :

Worst I've seen - which I'm sure will be repeated: Is the use of these wonderful looking field boxes with legs and the display cradel or stooge on top for your model! Flyer at our club started the model in the display cradel - reached over the top to adjust - model came out of the cradle - and then stuck his opposing hand out to stop it from comming into his chest.

Got diced really good - really fast- almost went into deep shock over it and was without his trade employment for at least 60 days - not accounting flying time. Mangeled every finger !

When I see those pieces of furniture and they proceed to start their plank in it, I want to kick the legs out from under it.

Here's the starting stands our club uses, we build them out of the old picknick tables that are re- cycled.

Hope I saved at least one trip to the stichery for you!

I've burned myself numerous times, and of course stabbed/cut myself with numerous xactos, and glued my fingers together with CA. The worst injusry from a running heli was with a Lite Machines electric heli. I was hovering it in a confined area (this was probably 5 years ago, I think it was a glow one I converted), and flew it into my leg. Being an LMH, the heli was fine, but it cut my shin deeply, and bruised it very badly. I was limping for a week, and gained a new respect for helis.

I had flown for 5 or 6 years at that point, and thinking about some of the things I did before that, I was lucky I didn't kill myself. I still remember spooling up my first Shuttle Z in a tennis court before I could fly. I didn't know what I was doing, and if it had come at me, there's no way I could have gotten away. I now have a healthy fear of my RCs, and I'm glad I do when I see some of the things other people do with theirs. People give me crap about flying far away from myself, and starting my giant scale planes with a thick leather glove, but it keeps me safe.

HELI:
I broke my pinky finger on a hot start with my titan 50. The fly bar hit it longways and crushed the bone like a busted straw. The bone has grown back almost 1 1/2 the thickness. Looks wierd. Happened almost a month ago and still hurts.

Plane:
I had a close call with an air plane a couple years back. My brother was landing his Ugly Stick and busted the landing gear and parts went flying. Acting on pure primal instinct, I reached up and caught the blade in front of my face. I hung that on my wall to remind me of what could happen.
