I am only curious. These heli's are very dangerous as we all know. I am only curious. What was the worst injury you have substained from a rc heli. We are very respectful at our field but are all relatively new. It is just a matter of time before we have some type of injury I am sure.

I am a paramedic of 19 years so I guess thats what has provoked this question.

If at first you don't succeed... Spend MORE money and TRY again!!!

unfortunately there have been deaths. I have also seen pictures of head/face injuries that are pretty gruesome.

makes you think twice about flying alone.

About ten years ago (on Father's Day

) I had an XCell Gasser on the flight line. Apparently, I could not slow the blades down to idle and decided to approach the heli and attempt to stop the blades by adding pressure to the center hub. Well, you can guess what happens next. The more I attempted to add stopping pressure, I did not realize my right leg was getting closer to the tip of the blades. Then........WHAMO!!!! I stopped the blades alright. Did not at first feel any pain but as the other flyers were running up, they noticed a gaping hole near my knee and let me know about. I grabbed on and applied presure. First aid was administered and shortly thereafter, I was in a clinic being stiched up (a total of 12 stiches). Funny thing was, my wife was having a blast at my expense, saying, that I should have stayed homw on Father's Day.

Needless to say, every Father's Day afterwards, I have gone to the field and flown, always keeping in mind the incident and thanking God it was not too bad and that it could have been worse.

Safety First, people. Fly safe!!

my personal worst injury is not that bad. just surprised the hell out of be because it was from a little electric micro.

it was a maiden flight of a maxir swinging plastic 280s with a 2300rpm headspeed. i got a pcm lockout from a 6' hover and it drifted over into a knife-edge and ate dirt. i was a good 45' away from the incident and 1/2 of a blade shot like a rocket at me and struck me in the leg. it didnt cut through my jeans, but it drew blood and left a nice t.v. remote sized bruise for a couple of weeks. i'm just glad it was winter and i was wearing long pants.

i have a lot more respect for the damage these little things can do now.

if it ain't broke…break it.

As we have all heard of deaths, that is not where this was meant to go.
I know have I heard a story of a person that was hit in the neck by the main blades and did not survive. I am not wanting that type stuff, why I asked like this

My POS Piccolo Pro. I had a high powered brushless in it and was holding it in my hand to check the tracking. The paddles are held on by friction alone and at the high head speed, the paddle flew off. The paddles were only about 2-3mm thick. It hit me right under my nose and stopped at the bone. When I rubbed my finger across the wound, it felt perfectly fine, then blood just started gushing out. The wound was A CLEAN SLICE! I don't think a razor could have cut my flesh any cleaner than that. If I had held the helicopter up 2-3 inches higher than it was, I wouldn't have my left eye. I am definitely blessed as I really CHERISH my eyes and vision. This thread just reminded me of that incident and now I have even more respect for my 90 size.... SHEESH!

A while ago someone here told of an out of control heli heading towards a little girl in the pits. A big guy saw what was happening and rushed forward, grabbed her & turned around. He shielded her from the heli which crashed into his back cutting & bruising him badly.

I've never been hurt badly(knock on wood). Only whacked my leg once slowing down blades, and one other time caught my wrist on the head again while slowing the blades down. Both resulted in only minor cuts. Maybe I should just let the blades stop on their own.

I had a hot start on my x-spec 91.

It has SAB blades on it ( the kind that arc back at the root).

When I set my starter down the wires flipped two switches on my radio, idle up and governor engage!

So now I am holding 3.3hp of gear leveraged torque trying to figure out what the heck just happened.

The blades folded back and trapped my thumb between the main grip and blade.

The thing is going full tilt trying to spin the head at 1900 rpm.

It is screaming, the clutch is burning and I am holding on for dear life! ( actually it has me! )

A fellow pilot pulled the fuel line and it died quickly.

After I sat down my thumb hurt a little. Determined to not let it get the better of my I pulled out another heli and flew it until my thumb started throbbing. By the time I landed my left thumb was three times as big as my right.

I packed up and soaked my thumb in ice.

Two days later I started to get the fealing back in my thumb.

Now when I start my helis I always engage throttle hold and keep the TX away from the starter.

I treat throttle hold like a safety on a gun. We are flying loaded wepons here my friends. I only disengage the safety when the heli is safely pointed down range and clear from other people.

The worst I've done with my heli is to burn my fingers. I forgot to take my glo starter off and after hovering out a tank with it still on I grabbed it to remove it. It was stuck because it melted to the glow plug. Minor burns to a few fingers getting it off. Glow starter was toast.

A Trex tail blade broke off in flight and hit me in the chest. It did not stick in but it did draw blood. Always wear glasses even if it is cloudy.

too scary for me:

a buddy of mine in new orleans had a 50 size raptor that he crashed twice in his back yeard ( not saying who it was, he knows, he he ) , the carbon figer blades flew clear down the street into the next block. got to love carbon fiber blades when they hit something.

I had an Eco 8 a while back and had an ESC fail, working very erratically. I instinctively reached for the rotors to grab hold before it started up again and just as I did it spun up. It wacked me on the thumb really hard. I thought my thumb was going to be bloody (or missing!) but no, it just hurt like hell! I'd hate to think what would happen with my Evo 50 in a case like that.

A guy at our field had a close call a week or so ago. He had landed his R30 and all the sudden it rev'd up and took off again and ended up crashing. He had not touched the sticks and could not regain control. It turned out his rx had gone bad and that is what caused the issue. We have since decided that the a good safety practice would be once you land to turn on throttle hold. Had he been out there and going to make an adjustment or pick up the heli and that happened it could have turned very ugly.

As I mentioned earlier we are all relatively new and are learning (sometimes the hard way). By reading some of these posts and others to come, I am sure I will find other things we can do to reduce the risk of injury...

The worst i have had happen is a blade cp hit me wide open, just a couple scratches. there have been some close calls at the field but nothing has ever happened that i have seen
