I think I just threw up in my mouth when I saw that picture. Yikes.

A skilled pilot without flight discipline is a walking time bomb.

There were a lot of crashes this weekend as pilots kept pushing the limit of how low they could get their helis to go. The one flight that topped the list in my book was Curtis' night flight demo on Saturday where he happened to sheer half of the tail rotor blades off while inverted and scuffing the ground. Amazingly he continued his flight and concluded it with his trademark half mile high auto.

All in all, a great time.

So much for a big introduction, maybe V2 will be more reliable.

What would be the fun of RC Helicopters if it was flawless? Sh*t happens... I disagree with the bad start for the Aurora...

I applaud the team members for building their helis in hotel rooms and even flying them during the event.

But dang... I want to see some videos!

Maybe you like to blame all your crashes on mechanical, rx interference ect ect, but Hey, everyone crashes no matter what they fly! Well, you must be perfect so you've probably never crashed a perfectly working heli due to your thumbs, right

Alan has been used to flying a electric sized 50 for a while now and his fingers has been trained for that. When you're only a couple of hairs high, it only takes a fraction of a second of less than perfect control and its in the dirt.(Later learned that it was a battery disconnect)

Juvaknin, I agree with you there, I wouldn't demo a heli until I had at least a few days with it. Understand though, the pressure from the heli community to get them flying was great and I'm sure the Szabos were just as excited!

All in all, this if the first flying pictures of the Aurora I've seen and I must say it is absolutely gorgeous!

So Alan crashing is Avants's fault? And it was Danny who didn't fully tighten a screw on assembly...

I didn't see Alans crash in person... but from the pictures it shows the Aurora is a strong machine.

As far as the N9 yes they did make a nice entrance into the heli market as a new heli... but from what I understand the Aurora is just all of Avants upgrade parts all in one heli...so there's not alot of testing to be done there.

Just my 2 cents that because it has some pilot errors doesn't mean it's a bad start for the Aurora.

The Aurora's

Keep in mind that they threw these machines together at the last moment (they were even to the field late because of it). Under that kind of pressure and rush, the risk of errors increases exponentially.

So, was it more important to show the helis at any cost (with non-production parts and risking crashes), or was it better to wait and eat crow yet another time for being a no-show? There's probably no easy answer. Both positions are defensible under those conditions. The only good option would have been to avoid the situation in the first place by launching on time and under control - but this is engineering.

I wouldn't hold this against them just yet. Wait and see how they continue to launch the heli - a rough start can be forgivable if everything gets worked out in the end.

If I recall the N9's debute was all of 2-3 minutes at last yrs 3dm. Not a good start? who's to say. I know it sucks working on the heli outside your normal surroundings. It always happens that I forget something. Videos would be cool. maybe AZ, sr or jr can come on RR and say what happened.
