Picked up a new project a few weeks ago and thought I would post a pic or two. Before I left Sikorsky I was the Crew Chief on "the Duke" for 3 years. I thought this would look nice in the stable. I will start on this after IRCHA. Look for it in the spring.

I will keep you posted,

Butch

Not sure on the mechanics just yet. I have a couple of thoughts but still up in the air. I have not done a gasser so that is also an option. Turbine, already have plans for one of those. If we have room I may bring it along to IRCHA. My son and his girlfriend is comming along with us so it might be tight.

The Uni 2000 with an os 60 or 90 from Graupner very thin profile
can use wire, cable or torque tube like x-cell left hand rotation gear reduced for torque Kevin

Just curious bwellmaker,

How does the real RAH-66 sound in comparison to the Apache...is it quieter? Also, where will you purchase the fenestron for it? I've always been fascinated by this bird. I can't wait until September. . If you ever in Va Beach, please bring it so we can take pics of the KIOWA OH-58D and the RAH-66 together. Wishful thinking but a cool concept.

Thanks for the input Kevin. I had not thought about the Grapuner mechanics. I will look into those. I will be in touch with V-east today.

Wemo,

Some nice stuff on your Kiowa. Those would be some great pics for sure. From the front to about 45 degrees either side of the nose, it is very quit. I dont remember the db but I want to say from the front it was roughly 30% less noise and around 15 to 20% less from the side than fielded helis today. Most of it had to do with blade and exhaust design but stuff like engine inlet design is a huge factor as well.

Wow...thanks for the info and the compliment...just finished fabricating rocket, now to the guns.
However, back to you. Where will you get your fenestron setup for "The Duke"? I've only seen about 2 on this website, but never seen it in forward flight. Sandy is a modeler for sure. All of his birds on V-eastonline are amazing...very clean, sharp and detailed. If you going to contact V-east, you might as well contact Rotary for a cover shot.

I feel like Christmas will start in September when you start building the RAH. Please keep us posted.

Daryl

Hi there folks

Thought you might be interested in seeing this, its a video shot last Christmas of me flying my helis at our local club. after nearly 3 minutes there is some footage of my Comanche, flies really well because it's quite a heavy machine so likes flying in a straight line !!!!!!!

[url=http://www.tinsnail.com/Xmas.wmv]

It has custom made mechanics with a Zenoah 23cc petrol engine.

Enjoy

All The Best

Paul

MLG rough mock-up

Started the rough mock-up on the MLG this afternoon. All the gear, gear doors, and weapon bays will be air actuated. I will build my own drag links for the mains and use retract cylinders to pull the gear into the wheels. I think I will not have a gasser. Leaning towards the Grapuner UNI 2000 mechanics, thanks of the input Kevin, for their compact size, LH rotation, with an OS 90 C-Spec, Vario fan and OF 5 bladed head. Grapuner also has a 6mm SS drive shaft that will adapt to the fan drive. The low exit from the mechanics for the tail drive is another reason I am leaning towards the UNI mech assembly. It will, or should be a straight shot from the mech assembly to the tail. "flippin sweet". Thanks for the PMs and input guys.

AHHHH the good ole days. I remember that pic. We were young pups then.

Good to here from ya.

Butch

Nolan,

Looking at your gallery brings back some memorys. I remember all the tufts plastered all over the tail because it was shaking so bad it was about to fall off. Oh, can I say that on here.

uni 2000

I believe you will be happy with the uni 2000 with the os90 c-spec it has as much power as the g231 gas with out the weight and desructive vibration Plus thats not a heavy ship to begin with
one of My NH90's weighs 17 1/2 lbs and flies great with no boging. Kevin

heh heh, i knew you couldnt wait, and i am glad you couldnt
when that ship was here at rucker, being the retractable landing gear fanatic i am, i gave the mains a good lookover when they rolled it out back. that gear is soo impressively made it is quite a work of art. i took a bunch of pics. the hydraulic strut that pulls them in also serves as the shock absorber, and the gear is pulled in at an angle as it retracts. just a funkey setup for something so simple to look at.

Emile,

I am glad to say I know all about that gear and it was/is an engineering marvel. It uses hydraulic pressure to retract and air pressure, stored by the retract process, for extention. Originally the air was stored in an S-76 float bottle under the pilots seat however later versions of the gear had the storage bottles on the drag links. Fortunately the gear will be simple compared to the real thing. The mounting angle will allow the gear to be pulled into the wells without folding in prior. Now if I could just get work to stop calling we could get on with this.

Hi bwellmaker

A very interesting thread! I cannot wait.

Hi Tinsnail

A great video of an RC comanche! However the
ratio of the movie frame is correct? It is of 5:4,
but I guess it should be of 3:2=720:480 or 16:9?

I was down at the Helis over Delaware for the weekend. Came into the office this morning to find a package from V-East. I now have the UNI-2000 mechanics for "The Duke". I think today would be a good day to call in sick however the boss has allready seen me. Oh Snap, I am the Boss. Not much has happened for the past week or so. Off to IRCHA next Monday then "Let the Build Begin".
