Hi all, Two weeks in row Ive bent the feathering shaft and broke the collective servo. Im using a DS811 I thought it would be fine for hovering and forward flight. I know I will need more servo as I progress. This has happened once in a hover and once in forward flight. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks Lenny

Feathering shafts (spindles) can be bent pretty easily. Even a hard landing or a very hard maneuver can bend them.

Quick-UK makes a hardened spindle that is somewhat stronger than the stock one. Other suggestions would be to make sure you lubed the dampeners (if they're stock rubber ones) or make sure that they aren't too worn out. Also, tracking problems due to bad grip bearings or poorly balanced blades can lead to bent spindles.

For the collective servo, you want at least 72oz-inch of torque. I don't think that servo will cut it.

I have to ask, when the collective servo broke, how did you get it on the ground without a crash? If you had a crash due to a bad servo, the crash would have bent the Feathering spindle.

I am with Leif, rough landings and hard manuvers can bend them, but just regular forward flight and hovering should not do anything to the feathering spindle at all.

My guess is that you have a serious tracking issue and somehow this is bending the FS......but I still have doubts that that could bend it.

Do you have any horrible vibration problems?

I helped Lenny with his EVO 50 and have seen it do it twice now.

Last week we bent the spindle but I can see that one happening as we had a finicky YS50 that got in a bit of a overspeed condition and while lowering the throttle, got in a VERY bad out-of-track condition. Very much like the woof-and-poof that was occasionaly seen on my old Raptor V1. I then told him about lubing the dampners, spindle, ect that was used to help the V1 issue. Spindle was replaced.

Last night I flew it around for him and it seemed to fly just fine. No vibration, out of track, or balance issues. He did very well for his first two forward flights and I thought we had corrected the issue with the lube and maintainance. On a straight a level pass during the third flight I heard it start to flutter again. I quickly took the radio and turned it back toward the field. With very little collective and the heli coming down quickly, it was VERY evident the blades were WAY out of track again. I set the heli down gently and from across the field, you could see the bend in the spindle. When we pulled the canopy off, it had shook so hard that the collective servo spline had snapped and the screw was the only thing holding the arm in place.

I agree that the 811 is marginal and needs to be replaced with a stronger servo. But any idea's on the woof issue? I'm beginning to think the servo is giving up and letting it flutter. I have a EVO 50 and 90 and have never had this problem with the Hirobo's. Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Matt

i had something like that with the old sceadus. bring into a hover slowly fly it around and then try to land the blades would go way out of track. it was my pitch servo gears stripped in one spot. basically using the engine to land with about +8 on the blades. would loose headspead quick causing the blade to go out of track.

If the servo starts to fail then the blades will go out of track and the spindle will bend.

I had the exact issue with my R30V2 about 2 weeks ago. I tryed to squeek by with an 811 on collective because it was just a 30. I was wrong. I didn't think I was gonna save it when it woofed. I replaced the 811 with an 8311 and the problem went away. I think that it is not only because of the torque, but the 811's seem to be VERY sloppy servos. HUGE deadband in my 811's. Its about the worst JR servo I've ever owned as far as geartrain quality.

If anybody is interested I have three, only mounted, not flown, JR8311's for sale. They came with a brand new 10x I sold a while back.

Best price on them brand new is $86 each.

I'm asking $75 each shipped.
