I fly the v1 shogun and today was checking a V2 and I see a metal clamp around the main shaft just under the rotor head.

what is this for?

Also the V2 appears to have a steel shaft vs aluminum on v1...correct?

cheers

Hey astroflyer -

That metal clamp holds a pin that keeps the washout base spinning along with the main shaft.

There is a notch in the washout base that "catches" on the pin and as you change collective pitch, the washout base slides up and down staying in contact with the pin.

Now as far as material for the main shaft, I'm not certain it's as easy as saying that all V2's have a steel main shaft. I'm pretty sure that V2's have main shafts in both "flavors." Obviously, since you show concern, you know that you want to get rid of that aluminum shaft ASAP if you happen to get a kit that has one installed...

Hope the weather is good where you're at! Happy flying

When the V2 was announced, a steel shaft was one of the improvements that was advertised. Hopefully this should mean all V2s come with it as standard. (At least, this was the case in the USA).

Thanks for the prompt response guys.

not being much of a heli expert I presume that clamp working with the wasout base must be some kind of improvement. should I expect to see much difference in flying the V2 due to this?

I already have the steel shaft in my V1 and looking at the v2 it sure looks like it's steel, nothing like the old aluminum one I have.

and yes, the weather finally took a turn for the better this week. beautiful today! lots of flying!

but last Thursday the hot weather bit me and my shogun. I was using a sombra labs receiver and was aware of the cold problem with it, but unaware of it having problems with heat also. In a hover, the heli suddenly nosed down slightly and flew off 30 feet or so to a small crash....no damage. felt just like a mushy battery.

thinking I had a bad battery I checked things over and installed a fresh battery, hovered for a minute or so to see that things were ok, then some forward flight for a couple of minutes, then back into another hover. that's when the shogun again went into a shallow dive to the ground 30-40 feet away. this time broken boom, bent flybar, spindle etc.

then I remembered the time two weeks ago, also on a rare hot day, when it flew into the ground when I was coming in for a landing. I thought that was me...might have been, but I wonder...

after some internet searching I found the sambra shadow discussions and sure enough, when I placed the receiver under a 60 watt bulb for 30 seconds or so everything quits. sombra is going to fix the receiver and I've gotta fix the heli.

cheers

I think that clamp is there to keep the washout base in line with the slot in the shaft- that way the friction as the washout base slides should be less. I had a V1 and now a V2 - I can't tell any difference in collective response so I'm not sure it's necessary.

I dont notice very much difference in flight between the V1 and V2- the biggest difference is that the tail is more reliable on the V2.
