e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > New Hummingbird 3d Pro experience...quality control???

I bought a new Century Hummingbird 3d Pro from Century's website, this month. It was to replace my Blade CP. I also have a T-REX SE. So far, I am not impressed with the quality control as compared to Align and E-Flight.

So far (remember this is a out of the box new heli):
1 - Before I even flew it: the top CNE213 Bearing was frozen to main shaft CNE313 and main shaft was not seated correctly in helicopter. I could not move the bearing down into the plastic mainshaft holder = I needed to buy a new main shaft and bearing.
2 - Before I even flew it: the two screws (used to secure the flybar) in the flybar control arms (CNE306) pushed the flybar down through the bottom of the plastic flybar control arms (it stretched the thin plastic) resulting in a warped flybar control arm set = I ordered the CNC Flybar Control Arm set (CNE260
3 - Before I even flew it: The blades were really out of balance. Needed to place three strips of plastic tape on one of the blades to balance it.
4 - Before I even flew it: The metal flybar (CNE304) is rusted and so is the bolt on one of the flybar paddles (CNE207)
5 - Went to replace the main rotor blade grips with the upgraded metal ones and the philips bolts that are holding the grip to the rotor hub were frozen = the bolt heads stripped and I needed to drill them out. Now I need a new CNE201 which is the Head axle and bolts.
6 - I have flown the helicopter 3 times and noticed that the tail wagged. When taking apart the 3d pro I noticed that the bearing CNE213 at the front of the tail by the crown gear is broken = there was a lot of up and down play with the shaft = I need to replace the CNE213 bearing.
7 - Noticed that the antirotation bracket CNE216 can move left and right, which is not good = I need to CA that in place.

YIKES!!!

I am going to call Century Support this week and see what they have to say.

3D Pro

3D Pro came out before Blade or Trex and helis just keep getting better as the hobby advances. Both the Blade or the Trex have issues as well; any helicopter does...it's the nature of the beast. The Pro has some well-known issues that have been worked through and I think it is a good heli. That being said it could be better (as any machine can) and in time probably will.

It is in the process of evolution from what I have heard and Century is good about updating their line unlike a company such as Thunder Tiger. The Pro never got a good start out of the gates and is now overshadowed by the Trex or Blade.

You seem to have some problems that are not the norm Pro issues. The Pro is not a first heli but is a good heli once it is setup correctly. I think with the word Pro in the name that Century is not trying to mislead anyone.

Don't get me wrong I had a few problems with my Pro's but got past them with some help and enjoy the benefits of small size and great flying qualities for it's size.

There is some good info on rcgroups.com or rotorworks.net about the 3D Pro. Hope this helps.

The list that I made was facts not opinion. If I were to have given my opinion that would be an additional, longer, post.

I agree with you that I probably have had problems with this particular Pro that are not the norm. But, there should be no broken parts when a product is sold...no matter how old/dated it is. As for the name containing: Pro that should not mean: find the broken parts that a novice may not be able to find.

I am hoping to get past these issues and have some fun flying it! Otherwise, I might sell it to a buyer with all problems taken care of. Sort of like a second round of real quality control.

Thanks for the links! I will look into them.

Franck,

Century is aware believe me.

People love to try and bring someone or something (entity) that is successful down; I guess it makes them feel better about them selves or a decision or purchase that they may have regretted. Where I live it's called short man's disease.

I have said what I have had to say and this is my last post on this topic.

Now I suggest that you troll elsewhere because this thread is dead. If you must persist remember that every time you say a company's name it is free advertising good or bad...so think about it.

One last thought and it is of my own is that Century is one of the top helicopter companies that are available to the average Joe. They have one of the broadest and complete lines out there at price that most of us can afford.

Peace

My 3D pro has 50 something flights on it. I own all the Bling, but have not put it on, because it flys too good to be taking it apart just yet. The ONLY problem so far, was I had to go to a 25 amp ESC intead of the 10 amp ESC.

Thank you for your post Greybird. It is good to hear of the experiences that others have had with their 3DPro...good and bad. I worked on my 3DPro last night and it is ready for the axle head and bolts to put on the metal blade holders and blades.

Hi Greybird

You may remember my input on the other forum over at ezone? re the 3dpro being ok with the original shaft setup. You know everyone saying it needs the belt drive kit?

Believe it or not mine is still going strong! so many flights Ive lost count now, and Ive just got in from putting a few more on it tonight. Mines finally lost the boom clamp and the boom itself is slightly bent after several hard arrivals!! but its still running the original shaft setup, and still smooth as silk! Ive gone through about three pinion gears for it, and a couple of feathering spindles, oh and the silly plastic guide thing for the links that goes onto the head block one side is broken, but I havent replaced it as the thing comes only when you buy the complete head block which is stupid!

My only beef about this particular model is the spares pricing they seem over priced compared to the Swift which I also have. However the price of the kits for the 3dpro have just dropped to a very reasonable £60 over here in the U.K. I may just buy another for spares.

Oh and I splashed out on the ally tail blade grips in a rare fit of expenditure!

UPDATE: I Spoke to Hecter at Century today. After telling him the problems that my particalar 3dPro had he said that he would ship me out the Head Axle and Dampeners CNE201 at no charge but needed my credit card for the shipping. I asked him to get his manager to have Century pay for the shipping. He never got back to me...so I will call tomorrow and see what happened. I hope to get the part this week and fly it this weekend.

FYI - When I called Horizon Hobby about the 4in1 going out and some other minor issues that I had with my Blade, I received a new replacement (everything)...bit of a difference in companies.

I have a 3DPro, bought it last year, and I am not impressed with it.
I however have a blast with my HB V3, by far the most fun out of the HB series. I have them all

HB V3
HB Elite FP
HB Elite CP
HB Elite 3D Pro

I would the V3 is the best of the bunch! Right out of the box!

Next would be 3D Pro / Then Elite FP and Elite CP last.

I love my 3dpro('s, I have a couple) but I can feel your pain on the QC. I've had much better luck with the Align stuff, and much better service from Horizon with faulty parts on items I purchased.

I think I said if before that the Blade Cp has a much better fit and finish than the 3dpro.

I agree wholeheartedly that they should be quick to send out replacements for faulty parts right out of the box. I think its just the nature of the heli business that they probably get so many claims agains these things that its hard to separate the wheat from the chaffe so to speak. I haven't even bother to call them on a couple of issues but one of the representatives that post here offered to send me some new 3dpro blades based on a post I made here and I thought that was pretty cool (here's a snippet from the PM)

Hi TommyB

Belt drive system...on the drawing board. A future product but currently no ETA.

I'll be sending a set out a new pair of 3D Pro blades to you today.

unfortunately this was probably close to a month ago and I've gotten loads of other Hummy parts from GrandRC in the meantime (they are awesome by the way).

All things considered the 3dpro has been worth it for me to tinker with, but you really shouldn't have to.

I further agree with the notion that it flies great stock although the metal main grips are ultimately a necessity if you want the full range of pitch. The tail grips, slider and control arm are adequate, but hokey at best. I just added some fuel tubing between the large metal washer and the damper bushing on the head and it was definitely a penny well spent.

The thing I'm most impressed with is the durabilty. I've not had a real hard crash yet, but with the exception of the crown gear, I haven't broken any of the parts that are supposed to break easy. I've replaced a grip, a main shaft, tail blade and maybe three crown gears at this point. The main gears, landing gear, feathering shafts, tail parts, blades, frame etc., are all extremely durable in comparison to the Blade CP, or the T rex for that matter.

On a per flight and/or per crash basis, and given the total cost of a complete rtf setup, the 3dpro is the best value going if you want to fly a decent CP micro. And its a blast to fly around in small spaces.
