I have been hearing a lot about this lately. Today I saw it with my own 2 eyes. Sorry about the picture quality all we had was a camera phone handy.

Raptor 90SE

YES, the bearings infact did split outer/inner race.

I have friends that had the same thing happen on the 50 also. Thunder Tiger better get their act together and put thrust bearings in the tail before someone gets hurt.

Yep, I was there when it happened too. (refering to the above photo)
Sux when a 10 dollar part could save you 400 dollars, in this case, the lack of the part will cost 400+ in damages at least.

I hate this tail problem, because there is pretty much nothing you can do to check for it. I keep checking my tail bearings but the things are so small, who would know when they are weakening! Talk about a design flaw. Seems to me like it's a ticking timebomb, and because it renders your heli suddenlly un-controlable, it will most likely cost a pretty penny when the crash happens.

Perhapse Thunder Tiger will listen and do something about it when someone takes out an eye while this happens at a hover.

Thunder tiger have solved the problem in the form of SUS Tail Hub R50/R90 (PV0499).

Quick uk have just improved it even more they can now supply their own version including blade grips.

Check out their website!

daren, these problem's concern me also, although it is yet to happen to me, if you look at the photo's the hub is still intact and looks like the grips have just pulled over the bearings.
This is another worry, as the TT and QUK, hub won't solve it.
Wonder if it's possible to glue the outer bearing races to the grip's.
As i have a R30 and 2 R50's, with a 90SE, on the way, i would like to know if anyone has a soloution, as all the Raptors share the same tail assembly, i also wonder if the new QUK assembly includes thrust races like the Hirobo's.

In this case it looks like some flaw in the grip itself... I don't think it can be a general problem with plastic tail grips since every helicopter I know uses these. Looks like bad luck!

It seems from the photo's that the bearings failed, not the case??
Are this correct, the outer race pulled off the inner race.

As the outer races are in the grips, and the inner races are on the hub, i wouldn't think the bearings are OK..
Unless you can find the balls, of course.

Those pic's illustrate bearing failure, problem will be solved when TT or someone else comes up with a design that incorporates thrust races just like in the main blade grip.

I can't tell what happened by looking at the pix. It looks like the nylon lock nuts are still on, but have the bearings pulled off, I can't quite tell? How would the bearings pull off anyway? If they didn't pull off, how did the grips come off? A little explanation by Ticidytoc on what came off and what stayed on would help. Thanks.

If the outer races have indeed come off, that would be scary! Come on poster, give us the goods!

Why do you think thrust bearings would solve the problem?

What other tails can easily be put on a R90 to prevent this problem. Perferbally ones with thrust bearings.

What problem are you trying to solve? I've never seen this on a R90 nor a 50 for that matter, but I still can't see what actually happened.

it does in fact appear that the inner and out races seperated.

If you look at the 2nd picture, you can see what appears to be the outer race still in the grip, and in the 1st picture, I think I can make out the grooves in the inner race.

Hopefully this in as isolated incident. Even the new SS tail hub wouldn't have helped here.
Grant H, and others who are wondering what other tail options are out there, here's a link describing a swap to a Vigor tail that has thrust bearings. I now have this assembly on my 90SE with no problems.

Warning....

Just this weekend i would have had a tail go if not for checking over the heli (again )

i noticed the tail blades were moving about, so i thought prefect time to fit my one piece hub

How ever when i undid my grips BOTH inner brearings had came a part , and the outer ones are wobblie as hell.

I also had the grub screw snap (with minimal force) when removing the nut that holds the bearings to the hub, i think this was fatigue caused by the bearings.

So one way or another the tail was going to throw the blades

Maybe using larger/heavy tail blades is making this to happend.

Can this be the problem? On my R70 I am using the factory plastic tail blades.

If the bearings are splitting apart, would a washer in front of the nylon lock nut help take some of the pressure off them?
