Went out this morning for some good flying... I was on my first flight of the day and my tail gave way... i was too close to ground...to recover.... i just bought new radix 710s...
260.00 in parts....
REASON: the little steel pin that hold the plastic gear in the tail worked its way out and shreaded my tail gear box.....
i might expoxy mine in this time...
REASON 2:do not use the futaba foam tape for the gyro...( my friends went in because of this reason)

I hope this help some of you save some money...

I use the futaba tape and it holds the 401 quite well, but it also sits up front on my reciever box...no fuel (or at least very little) gets to this area. When I had it on the back I put a rubber band over the top of it between the canopy mounts and that worked very well...any mounting tape that you have will start to loosen up when fuel hits it! Mount it up front if you can!

I don't like any of my electronics getting soaked with fuel...just seems like a bad idea. For this reason I have a front mounted servo as well, if setup properly it's just as good as the rear mounted servo.

I check that pin every gallon or so. I loctited the pin in place, as well as the setscrew and haven't had any issues with it.

Sorry about your crash(es) I hate it when it's something stupid, I would much rather dumb thumb it in...I can live with it when it's purely my flying skills and not something stupid that I didn't check.

Generally the best thing to do in tail failures is to climb (you need to be in a large area, especially since the piro rate will increase when you add pitch/torque and there is no telling where it will want to go!) then auto it in...but in your case when the pin fails I'm sure it adds a ton of drag to the mains too, so that might not be the best way to go!

Two good suggestions. I never totally rely on the foam tape, thus I either put a small diameter rubber band over the gyro, or a thin strip of electrical tape (as well as mounting it up front under the canopy).

Also, I ground the slightest flat spot on the middle of the tail pulley locking pin, and then tighten the set screw with locktite. It'll never come out.

The gyro tape on a newly installed Gy611 failed with about 1 gallon on my new R90. Talk about impossible to fly when the gyro is hanging on the side of the heli, even to do an auot. It also happened to another guy at the field. It was installed with two pieces of futaba foam with the metal plate in the middle as instructed. It was mounted on the rear of the heli but trust me there was not any fuel on it. I figure it split the foam due to running the engine rich during breakin creating excess vibration. Regardless, I now use zeal gel.

Just cut a piece of thin plastic tube , I always use a few dots of CA on both sides of my gyro tape.

I just make sure I Loctite and tighten the set screw that hold the pin in.

I've been using the Futaba tape for years with the gyro in the back and never had a problem. Over time it will start to seperate. If it does it's time to replace it. I usually get about eight months out of it flying two to three days a week. One of the guys I fly with uses the Zeal gel and it seem to work really well.

There's no set screw, we are talking Raptor 90 tail drive gears here, not the 50 with the set screw in the end of the shaft.

The tail ouput shaft use a plastic gear that have a little stell pin and this pin is secure by a allen set screw.

if you let the gel type gyro mount sit in the sun, it will melt. i know a guy it has happened to. it gets really messy.

I grind a small flat spot in the pin, and add a second set screw on top of the first.

I use blue lock tight on set screw and pin, CA the ends of the pin, and heat shrink over everything. I would rather replace all tail shaft than one set of blades. I lost the pin one time also. I haven't lost one since i started doing the above procedure. I know all where mentioned but i do them all togeather.

Ditto on Ken's suggestion...

Locktite on the set screw, CA at the end of the pins in the white gear, and heat shrink around the gear to hold the pin in. I did this at both ends (tail and drive gear), and if that doesn't hold then I don't know what will.

Two ways to crash, one way to prevent it: pre-flight inspection!

Not trying to sharpshoot you here, but I too have had both those problems and they were discovered before I flew. That pin in the tail takes a while to wear through the tail case and announces it's presence with a noticiable 'click' when rotating the blades. Spotting bad gyro tape is easy.

Eastcoastextremehelis.com sells a nice gyro mount with velcro straps that looks like it should do the job. I am going to order one and try it out.

I just put mine up front away from the fuel...it's $17 cheaper and works great Plus mounting it with velcro like that might mount it too "hard" to the frame and cause additional vibrations to get to the gyro. I haven't had a piece of gyro tape fail, and I've put a lot of gallons on the current piece of tape. As long as you clean both surfaces with alcohol before mounting and you keep fuel away from it you shouldn't ever have a problem...but check it often (as with everything else on the heli) just in case.

Put an elastic band over the gyro.
For the tailgear pin, I put some thin CA over the ends and have also drilled a 3mm inspection hole in the housing.
