My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I finally got my raptor 90 all finished but could not get it started with the starter I use for my raptor 30. The starter just goes uuhg.

I've been told to use a 14 volt system, a dynatron starter, or a portable drill with 18 volts.

Anyone ever use a portable impact drill for cars, it's go to be cheaper!

What should I get?

1. the best
2. just to get by with what I already have
3. something else "out of the box"

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I used a drill on my raptor 50 but it would not do it for my 90. You will eventually get the dynatron and a really good 12volt battery. Its easier on the whole starting system in the heli.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		the starter I have now is a standard hobbico starter which I hook up to one of thoughs small 12v batteries.

By the ways the impact drill I mentioned earlier is used like on the road and hooked up to the car battery. I think Sears sells one and thought this can be a purchase that works for the car as well as starting the raptor 90.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I am using a Hobbico Torquemaster 180 and a lawn tractor battery that I got at Walmart for $37.99. I have used a TM 90 as well. The 180 will work better though, but if you already have a 90 it will do it just fine.

I have NO problem starting my 2 R90SE's. Both have OS 91SZ-H in them. The 7amp hour batter is not enough. spend the $40.00 at walmart and you will not have to worry any more. I also use that battery to charge everything at the field if need be. I can go about a month without having to charge the battery. I fly no less than 3 times per week. 3 or more flight each time I go.

The lawn tractor battery is going to be the lest expensive with the most return. The one that I got has a small handle on it as well. It prob weighs about 12 lbs and has a 6"x10" foot print.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		By the ways I do have one of thoughs lawn mower batteries that I'm using to charge my Trex batteries while either driving or at work (I can check it frequently). I wasn't sure if I could use it for the hobbico starter. This sounds like a good idea though.

Should I also consider getting a one-way starter shaft. I've gotten my starter shaft stuck in my 30, I don't know if that could be a problem with a 90 size engine.

As long as the OWB (one way bearing) is good in your clutch you should be fine. On both of my R90SE the starter cup does not spin at all after the motor is running. Only time that you would have a problem is if the OWB in the clutch goes bad.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Dynatron on 24 volts. It will start anything you throw at it, possibly even the Space Shuttle (I haven't actually tried it on the Space Shuttle, your mileage may vary)

I dont think it is the starter.The 30 starter will be a bit weak.
Had the same problem with my 50 to 90 and found the 90 floods very quick and then the starter can not turn the motor.
Wait till you are ready to start the 90 within 30 sec before connecting the fuel line to the engine.

this is what i use for my 70 OS two 7.4 volts = 14.8 volts i have a 90 size and works just fine would be really powerful with a 180 starter.

That works great with two 12 volt batteries making 24 volts but with the pic i showed you 14.8 volts starts very easily. Plus not having to tote the two 12 volt batteries around with the two 7.4 attaches right to the bottom of the starter no wires to the batteries not have to carry two 12 volt batteries. It works either way 24 volt or 14.8 volt.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I am going to try and stuff 2 7amp hour batteries ($17) into my field box and then make a special 24v tap on the outside to plug the dynatron into. So its a little bit more weight, but i dont carry it around much, so its no big deal. I would rather have my 90 start each time and carry a little bit more.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Ive been starting my 90 now with my dewalt 18 volt cordless drill , like some one said be very carefull as from new they hydrolock easily and will loosen your crankshaft nut .
Also on the drill you can turn the rachet on which will stop damaging the engine if it locks.
I think you will burn your 12 volt starter out soon on 24 volt , you may get away running it on 14 or even 18 but 24 will shorten its life very quick and that will let you down soon.
The only problem I get with my drill is some times it slackens the chuck off as its left hand to start , but it only needs charging about every 4 outings but I keep a spare battery and run them down until flat.
