For those that saw the T-Rex 600 at yesterday's OCHC meet, what are your impressions? Appearance, engineering, flight characteristics?
Rumor says it should be out mid May - does that sound feasible?

I noticed last night that at least one vendor is taking pre-orders for it. I'd be curious to know if they have pricing data.

Hell yes its feasible, this is Align brother. You have to remember that quality control is completely out of the production chain, so they can just invent a product and get it to market.

As hobbiest, it is our job to spend thousands on this bird in a mass R and D effort (at no cost to corporate)...in return, august/novemberish we will see the T-rex 600 V.2 with all of the fixes we find (for a alight upcharge).....

duh!!!

I was just dying to buy one; the money is just burning a hole in my pocket. I could hardly wait. I searched for every bit of information I could find. Now that I saw it I lost my enthusiasm. It is too big. I might as well fly my Raptor. You need more space to enjoy flying something of this size. You are more likely to attract attention and thus lose your schoolyard flying site.

It has 4 batteries; can you imagine the cost of batteries. Maybe they can reduce it to one battery, but it is still going to cost.

Now I am all hot for the new Herobo, coming this summer. The new Herobo is the same size as my JR voyager, (smaller than a Logo 10), much more convenient size for an electric.

Unless the price is lower than I anticipate I will be waiting. If I am surprised by the price, then I will probably buy an Align and a Herobo.

fwiw..

Mosy of you know I love my Rexes with all their "limitations"...That said, I like the design and quality of the one 600 I've seen...what I am concerned about is the battery cost and the slight lack of power I saw demonstrated...The heli looks to fly very well, and is totall silent except for main blade noise...Rumor is that Align is still working on power plant, so these issues may be resolved by the time it hits the market...If the Rex is any indicator, Align will fix whatever issues arise!

Andy told me that battery cost will be around 200 bucks ea.
You need 3 or 4 to have a descent day. The battery cost is keeping me away on purchasing it. The heli is awesome though.

the motor that Eric Stolz had in that 600 is a prototype, it is not going to be the one we see in production. also the batteries that were run were a 6s2p pack made up of 4 align 2100 for the smaller TREX. this is not the final power combo by any means. even with this combo and the motor getting boarderline hot, the perfomance was stellar. True, the power was a little low (not bad though) when he flew it, but overall I am extremely impressed.

wow, 2008 was a crappy year! Oh well, I'm goin flying :)

What did you expect they told everyone up front it was going to run 600mm blades, ie: 50 sized machine doh!

This was always the case as well, and as far as I am concerned from all the videos I saw that is a very low , very low low estimate, it will need 10S to really make it bolt like a Rex and that my sone will be over 370 USD a Lipo, (EACH) so you will bet on 1200+ USD for a good day supply of flying lipos.

Don't forget when you see pros fly these things they have much better collective management than your average dude, they can make a very weak in power heli look pretty good, I think the power setup at its current state of 6S is VERY weak for the average pilot.

I'm going to wait on this one. Every time I buy the latest and newest thing out there, they end up having some issues that are later resolved in the revised model. Just look at what happened with x-box 360. They rushed to release it and it turns out that the first ones released had problems with catching on fire! (so i've read) Same thing with a motorcycle I was looking at. A new model that had problems over heating but the manufacturer saw this and revised the bike for next year. I'm going to wait until someone does a review on it at the very least so i know what to look out for. This is not always the case, but I've been burned before and end up saying "man, I wish I waited for that one"

I don't think Align "rushed" to release this one. There has been a series of videos posted of Align pilots testing the bird. Align flew the Szebo brothers and Jason Krause over to Taiwan for the test sessions. And this is after all the tests done by their local pilots during the R&D stage.

Nobody can guarantee this heli will be 100% bug free when they hit the market, just as with any other manufacturers. But I believe Align has made some huge efforts to get it right the first time. For that I think they deserve some credits.

It looks like a nice heli. - but it looks like the guys testing are running short flight times and heli. looks like its working real hard to get through some maneuvers.
I have the trex and love it, but will definitely wait for a while to see if Align has overcome their "bring heli. to market and have market help them fix the problems."
The only reason they got away with that was because there really wasn't a micro helicopter that could perform as well, once the trex was set up.
But with the 600 - there is steep competition. Once a guy decides to move up from the 450 - there are the Logo,swift,raptor-E and of course, the new MA50-E (which I know will be a great heli.)

Although, I want a larger e-machine - if I hear that they still have the same "got to fix" these problems - I will buy another brand for sure.

I must say, that for them to fly the Szabo brothers and Jason Krause is very impressive indeed. I've got the batteries already, so we'll see. I wonder how it weigh empty though vs let's say a Logo 10. FWIW, I can just put a 550 blade in it right?

They have already changed a couple things since the american pilots went to Test fly them in the past couple weeks. That much I will say.

Align has never made a large heli.

This is the first one.

If it will be perfect, then Align will have made history.

I have a Trex, a Swift and an ERaptor 50.

The Swift swings 550 size blades and runs 8S1P emoli sells powered by a Neu 1907-1.5y.

The Swift is smaller than the Rex 600 and it costs at LEAST a $350 lipo to power it. If you want Trex 3D, then make that a $550 lipo.

My ERaptor spins 600 blades, the same as the Rex. It has been lightened and is close to the Rex 600 in terms of weight and blades main/tail.
It's running an 10S2P 4200 TP Prolite lipo $550.

So...

If you want to spin 600mm blades on the Rex 600 with an efficient motor such as the Neu 1912-1.5y, you will be spending $550 for a good lipo that will last you in the long run and not puff when you hit the collective in a bad situation.

For those who think this is outrageous and beg to differ, please show me your Rex 600 compariable heli that is powered by anything less.

I really want the Rex 600, but I'm going to wait until everyone goes out and buys it as an impulse buy without 100% knowing what they are getting into as far as the large, heavy lipo-hungry heli's.

Then, I'll just pick one up from someone who got in over their head.

... But honey it was only $$$

T-Rex 600 photos

I took some photos of the T-Rex 600 at the OCHC meeting yesterday. I don't usually post my photo's... But because of the interest in this subject, I have enclosed a few in this posting.

Best regards,

Misc. thoughts

The price point of batteries at $200 +/- is a huge improvement over initial estimates.

Any new product is going to be shaken out in the field - and improvements are the sign of a company that listens to feedback. I don't view Align as having been remiss in quality control - and look where they've come with the T-Rex 450 in a very short time.
Some issues encountered in early production are to be expected - those that don't think so shouldn't be early adopters.

I didn't know Align made the X-Box 360!

While align does not make X-box or motorcycles, I am speaking in general about the release of new products from anyone. I prefer to wait until they work some of the kinks out rather than dive right in like i've done in the past. Of course if it does come out and have a problem, align would most likey be quick to fix it and offer the upgrades to the people who already own the new heli. I was also not saying that align rushed into things but I can see how my previous post could make it seem that way. Microsoft was the one that rushed into the x-box. thats what I was reffering to. I am not bashing align or this new heli at all. I just want to see how the consumers react to the heli and see what problems come up. major or minor. For example, if the consumer finds that it really needs a 500+ dollar battery to be up to par with the other copters, I'll pass. And there is a pic of the first Traxxas T-max in my gallery. Traxxas has since come out with two far superior versions of the t-maxx that I wish I would have waited for. I've learned the hard way before to research my investments before jumping in head first.

You won't find a $200 lipo that will fly ANY heli swinging 550-600mm blades.

To fly my E-Raptor 50/600mm blades takes one 10S2P TP 4200 Prolite. That lipo is $550. I tried a few different combo's and burned through 2 lipo's. A 6S3P 3600 and a 8S2P 4200. Neither liked the weight and the size of the blades.

Only one alternative is the moli cells.

I am running an 11S1P 3000 mah moli pack in my Raptor. It is 'almost' as good as the 10S2P 4200 TP PL, but not as punchy.

The moli pack cost me $250 for 2.

The problem I expect with the Rex 600 is with the frame. Where in the hell do I mount the emoli cells ?
And if I can, is there enough room to put a good, reliable motor in there like the Neu 1912-1.5y ?

From what I have seen, heard and read, you will be spending at LEAST $400 for one pack to fly it safely.

I mean 'safely' as in you won't puff the packs with hard stress and that the packs will last more than a handfull of cycles.

I'm waiting until you guys (guinea pigs) get a hold of the Rex600's and their 'recommended' lipo and fly them for a month.

Then I will buy a used one.

... But honey it was only $$$
