mounting

I used to mount all my pattern motors using the back plate and my BIG Super Tigre's came with a backplate mount as part of the motor package so I wouldn't anticipate a problem there. I have run the backplate mounted motors on the Stratus for quite a while now and have not seen any motor problems because of it.
I find it quite amusing that the model is not even yet in production and folks are questioning the design. I think I will wait and see how it turns out before I comment.

In addition, every Extreme I have ever seen on RR or in person has had a huge header and long tuned pipe not a Muscle pipe or muffler.

XLFLYER, it is simple if you don't like it don't buy it but why flame it till they have the final version boxed and shipping?
I'm sure it will look a little different before then.
Some people get tired of the high fuel cost so a 50 size would be a little better in that respect also.
I'm really wanting to see how the electric version looks.
I really feel it is going to be great seller.

Guys I am not flaming it!

I am just analyzing what the heck Tim was thinking when he designed this bird?

I am sure it will be very popular and of course MA produces extremely high quality kits!

More observations

If you analyze the photos on, can I say it Helif's website you can see that it has a very centralized weight distribution and a very cool tail gearbox. However, if you look at the photos on the right side of the frame you can see that the gyro amp and receiver are so low on the frame that I can see them being damaged easily. All you guys stating they never go in nose first wow you are lucky! I have personally lost 2 nose first and over the last week seen 3 others have the same fait. HEHE must be regional..

I do agree though with the post on the "modular-ize" parts that seems like it will be the future trend. I believe Audacity's new heli will accommodate many different engines.

In regards to the Super Tigre mount as GM1 stated it came with the motor so it was something the Super Tigre engineers had accounted for in their design. Has OS accounted for this type of mount I do not know maybe someone can email them and get us an answer?

Here is a thought will OS warranty their motors if they are mounted in this orientation and they can tell the rear bolts have been removed? They may claim that the modeler had something to do with the failure?

And in regards to the Stratus it is a mid engine heli and it has some crumple zones so it really cannot be used in this discussion!

Thanks a lot Jeff H for pointing out the additional engine support!

Angelob you are confused the muffler/exhaust comments were in regards to the Vario Extreme! No problems..

Hey for you guys that really like the design and have been in a debate class convince us nonbelievers that this is the ultimate design.

Here is an idea GM1 with your mathematics background and your influence with MA being a sponsored pilot why don't you and Tim get together and document what will happen to the model in a crash! I would look forward to seeing some video footage or some photograhs! If the model is durable you very well may change my mind!

And guys this is not a personal attack so keep it clean and grownup! This discussion is supposed to be fun and possibly informative.

I just never seen MA make this many new parts in their history. They usually make a different set of main frames or add some metal parts and calll it a new model. Everything looks new, but the head.

I personally like the idea of a slightly upmarket 50 no more upgrades!
Not that my opinion would make a difference, I really don’t like the engine arrangement. I love the idea of a main belt drive assembly but the fact it then goes to a secondary toothed main gear sort of takes the beauty out of having a main belt drive

Based on this I would rather see them just move the engine up and back, in-turn drive directly off this toothed main gear. Almost like most of their current models, just compact!

crash costs

with the engine up front, and the high cost of Min. parts, if that machine hit nose first, it would be totaled. i would like to see the price come down some on there parts. i think thunder Tig. will have nothing to worry about.

so you either crash on a strong aluminum motor, just like model airplanes do all of the time or you crash on you radio gear. Hm I have never damaged a motor on my airplanes crashing them and they are going much faster. I have however destroyed a GY601 $350, R149 $160, GV1 $130, Duralites $80.

They also said the replacement parts would be about the same as the fantastic plastic models.

I am taking an optimistic wait and see. I saw a lot of bad coments about the Stratus and it has been a huge success. If the replacement parts cost is similar to the plastic stuff, this will kill the market.

John M I agree with you it would be nice to have a no upgrade 50 heli!

a3dpilotusa Here is something to consider about plane motors when you crash usually the motor and firewall separate from the fuselage and the balsa and plywood fuselage shatter absorbing the impact thus less force is being transferred to the engine.

With the MA 50 helicopter it is mounted to a very strong and ridged piece of carbon fiber and the airframe made of plastic, carbon fiber, and cnc aluminum bits will send the force into the engine case and the thick carbon on the MA 50 is not going to give like a plane's fuselage.

So does anyone with plane experience agree with me?

Guys my comments are targeted toward the nitro crowd so they do not apply to electrics! Personally I think they designed this heli to be an electric and the nitro conversion was an afterthought!

KC if cost is not important why are you even considering a 50 go buy a 90 with a better power to weight ratio! The reason the 50 market is so popular is that they are cheap, easy to maintain and fly great!

Oh by the way what camera did you use for the photos in your gallery? The colors are incredible!

I trashed an OS 50 in a Sceadu when I crashed on concrete due to a part failure followed by an out of control sort-of landing. Had the engine been mounted up front, it wouldn't have been hurt, the radio gear survived the crash in the sceadu.

The heli landed on the back skid, broke it and the back of the muffler hit the ground and broke the crankcase just under the muffler mounts.

Sh!t can happen whereever you mount the engine

Hey Jeff H I totaled a Sceadu 50 nose in and all of the radio equipment, airframe, engine and muffler were totaled! Each crash is different however, with a mid engine airframe the chances of engine damage is reduced! Really study the photos I would be willing to bet that the electronics are going to be damaged more often then you guys realize!

One final quick note how many of you have sprayed your heli down accidentally with fuel while fueling it? I have at least 3 times and I wonder how your gyro amp and your expensive receivers are going to like it with the MA 50 location?

Some how I am getting the feeling you guys have not really studied the photos so this will be my last post.

bperry I personally think $600 is cheap for a nice 50 size heli however, many other people think it is a lot otherwise TT would not be so popular!

Well I tried to make things interesting and get you guys thinking now get back to your heli worship! LOL

I am really excited to see this machine. It has such a different layout. I do agree though, that if you're considering a $600 50 size, crashing shouldn't be a concern anymore. As to why not get a 90, because even if the skills have progressed, wallet sizes may not have. I would love a 90 size but I can't afford it. I am itching to buy another machine though. I'm curious about the crash parts though because of the low part count, I question how high a crash would cost. The electronics position do seem a little bothersome because exposed to the fuel line. Perhaps a small plastic cover could solve this problem?!?! I almost bought myself a $550 craptor SE and glad I didn't. I just couldn't bring myself to buy one. I'm curious to know what this thing will become if it becomes a 90 size. I'm itching for a 90 size and at 750-800 might be in my price range. When it comes to 3D, MA helis always come to mind. So what is the name of this machine going to be? And I'd like to see the canopy. How many actually think about crashing when buying a heli? I look at crash part cost. If an electronic, an engine, or heli goes, either way, it's gonna cost you.

Looks good MA. I like it and I am itching to hear more!

Bring down the price to be a bit more competitive cause even for me $600 is kinda pushin it!

For 600 bucks, I can get a plastic fantastic "EVO 90".

This machine, looks cool. But, I'm not going to buy one. The 50 market is taken. That's my opinion. I hope MA takes a market share, but I don't think it will. Like I said before, the Fury 50?????? was not a popular machine.

I think MA should stick with the 90 size++++

All the Fury 50 owners speak up for MA. Please a true MA 50 owner.
