Sorry to hear of your heli's mishap.

At my flying club, it is the responsibility of the owner if the owner ask someone to "check" out thier heli. It is unfortunate that these things do happen.

Crash

I say, rebuild it, get you a sim, learn to fly it yourself. That's what I'm doing. Don't let that incident keep you from this great hobby.

Blah Blah Blah...

If you asked him to fly it YOU pay.

If he asked you to fly it HE pays.

Period.

Remember, you were the one looking for the help.

I won't fly another guy's heli unless I set up the engine and radio and he understands fully that it is his money if it crashes. If I had to pay I would never touch a heli I didn't own. I have vowed to never touch someone elses heli anyway but I keep getting sucked in. Of course, if I start doing something stupid, I would pay but I don't know how this guy built the thing or if there is a little time bomb that neither of us saw. The way to look at it if you are new is that they might crash it but chances are they are more likely to save it than you are should a problem occur. They may also be able to turn what could have been a $300 crash into a $150 crash. I like to give my heli to people I think are more experienced with a certain machine just to see if I am getting the most out of it. If they crash it then it was my fault for giving it to them, I pay.

Btw, yes blair has it right. I didn't see his post.

Blair is right...

Howdy!!!
If you ask someone else to fly your heli and it crashes, you pay.. Case closed..
If someone else asks to fly your heli i.e. a friend or other pilot you trust, and they donk it, they pay..

It's the HELI-CODE!!!

Let's all take a moment to thank Blair for that clear concise answer... Blair.....Thank you.

Now, shouldn't you be out staking out a doughnut stand instead of wasting taxpayers..(well cannuck dollars) money by playing on the internet?

We love you Blair...

Crash

Ben,
If you are talking about the guy that was helping you when i saw you at our fun fly Sun, he is a very good pilot,
If he said you had a mechanical problem then you did. ( if he was the same guy helping you when i was watching )
also if you hold the test pilot responsible for parts there would be no test pilots.
sorry to hear about what happen however when flying heli's it is going to be routine as far as crashes go.

It doesn't matter who said it first, what matters is we all agreed on the "HELI-CODE", no matter how long this thread got

Thottle hold

My friend let me put this in a gental way so you could feel better:

Depend on who you ask for help, If you ask an expert to set it up and he agree , he is teaching you, he is entiltle to your respect and compensation.( off course he could have spot any protential failure will save you money to rebuilt )

If you ask anyone else, sport flyer, Weekend hover, Cruiser, Teaser... They agree to help, they are sharing their experience and joy but could cost you ( rebuilt for instant)

An expert now days don't come over and ask you to fly your heli, they might given you some moral lirature, beginer need a lot more information than just trimming the heli

One day you will have some one else come up and ask for help . Are you gone to said NO or ..........

Sorry to hear your heli crashed. My suggestion is what I have done. I have flown planks for decades and the same thing occurs helping folks with them. When you become proficient folks will ask you for help. You will be faced with the same delimma: do I help them or and if I do, how much.

I have not refused to help people, but I make it clear that if there is any kind of problem, they are responsible. I will not horse around with somebody else's equipment. I will trim it out and help adjust the engine. I learned from experience, where I have been asked to wring out a plank and the wing breaks off in the air because the guy did not put any fiberglass tape in the center section where the wings are joined together.

Regarding helis, I paid my way to learning the basics. I attended Ernie Hubers school. I paid the local expert to help me with my XL custom graphite which was too much for me as beginner and ended up getting a Raptor.

It is hard to say what happened to your heli. Maybe you got interference, maybe the battery was low, who knows. The bottom line is that it your responsibility to learn the hobby, and sometimes you get what you pay for. I know this sounds mean, but it the truth. Not many people want to take their flying time teaching others to fly, fixing their heli, trimming their heli, etc.

My suggestion is this: Either attend Ernie Hubers school or hire somebody to devote time solely to helping you and teaching you. Know the qualifications or experience level of who you hire.

Heli flying is not easy, it is a worthwhile achievement when you learn and achieve each goal you set.

Good Luck!!!!!!

I think there should be a rule: You ASK someone to fly YOUR ship and they crash it it's on YOU. Someone ASKS you to fly YOUR ship and crash it it's on THEM.

Amen, flatspin!

I think you hit the nail on the head. Who's doing the asking determines the financial responsibility.

Suck it up

Fix it and move on. Believe me, it won't be the last time you have to put your new money pit , umm I mean heli back together. We've all been there.

It's a dissapointing start, but it happens sometimes. You get over the shock of seeing it go down for the first time.

Helicopters much like most farm animals have predetermined destiny. Sooner or later they meet their maker. One can only hope it happens later rather than sooner. If one wants to stick with this hobby, repairs, upgrades and rebuilds are inevitable.

Good One....

If it was unforseen mechanical and or electrical I would say it's the owners /manufacturers problem but I would probably feel bad and at least help pay.But if he said it was because of the sliding battery tray, well it becomes his problem due to the fact he took on the responsibility to look it over and set it up.He should have noticed the tray as a possible problem and found a way to fix it BEFORE the bird took to the air. When you take the controls you take responsibility of the machine. So in this instant who was really the newbie?I think the guy who crashed it because at least the owner KNEW enough to get help!

Safe_Cracker, I couldn't disagree with you anymore with what you said. If we put this kind of responsibility on test pilots we won't have any and then where would we be? Simple as stated before..
you ask...you pay
they ask...they pay......

My motto is this..Fly...Rebuild...Fly
