Chinook

I`ve had great success with my electric conversion , I have never altered the electronics from the factory setup for Futaba the only problem I have encountered is it kicks up when you stop from a fast forward or backward flight this could probably be sorted with the controller but you know it`s coming so its quite easy to control

Hi guys,

I see there starts do be some Chinook out there now. That's great

I've come to a state where the machine runs quite fine, but I'd like to refine a little the electronic setup to see if I can get it more stable. Can you tell me what are your Gyro Gains for the different axis ? So I could see the tendancies from your setups and not go in the wrong direction

Thanks !

I am also trying to set up a CH-47 I just purchased. I tried to fly it a couple of times and it was pretty squirrely. I have read the posts on this thread and am going to up my ATV's and drop the gyro sensitivity on the elevator since it wants to buck up and down. I too would like to know what other things I need to do. My gyro is attached with foam rubber like mentioned earlier.

Well after reading this thread I found that my elevator and yaw axis on my gyro were backwards like others talked about. After fixing these two items the heli now hovers very stable. I can probably still do some fine tuning since the tail still drifts slightly to the right but other than that it flys great. This thread was a big help. Thanks

Glad I wasn't the only one that had gyros wired reversed!!! It cost me a set of rotor blades the first time I tried to hover using the Hirobo recomended settings.

After reading the posts I thought there is no way my manual has the setting backwards but sure enough I checked and they were. I scraped some covering off of my blades on my first attempt to hover with the setting reversed. I am having a problem now with the blades coming out of sync with each other. The belt feels pretty darn tight but I don't know could it be not tight enough? Almost caused a huge crash.

The belt has to be very tight ------ very very tight.if you turn the heads slowly you should be able to feel every tooth on the belt , also before you put the blades on run it up to speed to equalise the belt tension .

Good info. Thanks so much. Its running like a dream now. Even got into forward flight for the first time today. Really have it flying stable now. Even in 10-15mph wind. You could notice the effects of the wind but it was controllable.

Stripping Main Gears

I supply Hirobo in New Zealand.
One of our good clients has had problems with stripping main gears.
Can anyone point out the main points to look for when setting up the Chinook's drive line to eliminate the cause of the gear mashing.
Any help will be appreciated. I can supply the gears but the kits are not possible. The Sceadu main gear was thought to be an option but the diameter is bigger. The black standard one is very cheap and maybe could be fitted with some modification. The other point is running the high head speed @ 1700 who has done this successfully without stripping gears. Any thoughts and inputs will be highly appreciated.

Too much belt tension can lead to gear stripping. And most people seem to fly at around 1550 rpm with good results.

I too had real big issues stripping gears, its all got to do with torque. The lower the head speed the higher the torque. loosen the belt just a fraction, but still keep it real tight, set the head speed to allow the engine to run just above peak torque, make sure the gear has a tiny amount of back lash & runs smooth then apply silicone lubricant to the pinion, just a touch, you must use the original delrin drive DO NOT use a cheap alternative due to the aforementioned high torque. Hirobo had the same problem whe they built the kit, thats the reason for the expensive gear.

Hope this helps. DJ

Stripping Gears.....

The problem that I had was cured by the ESC used.....
I have changed to the CC HV85 with the LATEST update and this stops the unit from being able to spool back up too quickly IF when you set down and everything has not quite stopped yet and you hit the throttle.... with the custom settings available for the super slow start up voltage and spool up, I have not lost another main....
I am sure that there are other ESC's out there that have this capability, but the CC is doing the job rather nicely......also make certain that you have a pinion that covers the entire main gear for full engagement....
Hope this will help you out..... Stan

I also had a problem stripping maingears, but that was cured with the new software for the CC 85HV ESC, which now gives you the opportunity to set the spool up speed to a soft setting and thus no more srtipped gears when you run the RPM back up after coming down on it but not stopping! I have not even come close to stripping a maingear since I installed the software! If fact, it is still pure white, with absolutely now signs fo wear!

Thanks for the help and suggestions. I was refering to running the OS 50 glow engine did anyone find there is not enough adjustment for the backlash ? Also what is considered a normal flying style for this model. Main rotor belt tension could easily put extra load on the gear train being too tight. Disastrous if sync goes out.

Going to be offering this Helicopter

I will be posting an ad on the classified forums for the CH-47 Chinook outlined in the original post.

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t465786p1/

I haven't flown this helicopter very much and I now have a 3 month old son who takes most of my attention. I was hoping to start competing in scale competition using the Chinook, but since getting married in 2007 and having a baby this year, and also serving in the US military; I don't have the time to spend with this fine piece of Radio Controlled machinery.

I will be looking for a new home, but I want someone who will give it the same amount of care I gave when building it.

Thanks,

Steve

A blonde is on board a small plane when suddenly the pilot dies.

Not knowing how to fly a plane she grabs the radio. "Mayday, Mayday! My
pilot just died!" she screams.

ATC receives her call for help and responds: "Don't
worry, madam. I'll talk you down, just do as I say. First I need you to
give me your height and position"

"I'm 5'2" and sitting in the front"
