My Posts This: Topic Forum | Just re-read my post and want to add/clarify. When I said "undercoat" I really meant "overcoat" because you're painting from the inside. Using something like white, or even a silver helps bring out brighter colors of paint. When you're using darker colors (not that you would on a Heli, could be rather difficult to see) you won't neccesarily want to use a bright color. A good way to experiment is by picking up some transparency at Staples or something and painting different colors with different backings to go an idea of how it's going to look.
As for painting fiberglass/carbon canopies, it's the primer that's going to have the effect on the color. For red, I almost always use a white primer, for colors like blue/gree etc...I like to use a black primer, and for colors such as yellow and orange (just naming more popular colors, and this is of course personal preferance) I vary between white and gray. Always use a clear coat. I also use automotive paints as I like the way they look. Here's an awesome site for buying paints and tutorials
