I am using the align 325 wood blades on an extended boom mx400pro and having a tough time trying to get them to track. If I adjust them one direction or another they just get worse. I am using the plastic blade holders... I wonder if they would track better if I went to the metal blade holders or if the problem really is the head linkage area(still pastic for me). The only thing that is metal on my mx400 head is the center hub and swash(which has a lot of slop in the bearing area even after being replaced). Or it could have something to do with needing to modify the align blades by putting the helimax spacers from the helimax blades onto the align 324 blades.

Tracking issues

For what it's worth, even though I currently fly a T-Rex and not an MX400, I had tracking problems at any RPM over 2400 using the plastic head on 325 Pro Woods. Upgrading to the aluminum head, even with plastic blade grips, allowed me to solve my tracking problem. Now my rotors track perfectly. It's actually sort of eerie, I'm not used to rotors which aren't off-track in the slightest, normally they're at least half a blade width off or something.

My suspicion, however, is that this kind of thing holds true across different helis. The plastic head, if I understand correctly, distorts slightly under heavy G's. In my case, reducing the RPMs of the head below 2400 also resolved the tracking problem across multiple sets of blades.

And BTW, I *LOVE* the flight log. It's really nice to see someone collect lifetime data on a heli to show some real-world reliability figures. My local hobby shop says they no longer carry Shoguns and MX400s because they, to quote the store clerk, "suck", but clearly your maintenance record on your 400 isn't very different from that of many T-Rex owners.

Hey Celihopter, have another question for you. I was having problems with the 400 where it would lose power for no reason. Battery only 2 to 3 mins into flight. Fortunately I'm still hovering, so not too much of a drop. Any way, I read where you had experienced some probs with the ESC, so I replaced it and fired it up again thinking it would be good to go. It's still doing it Could it be the radio, receiver, or motor? I'm going to replace the motor next and try to eliminate that component. Let me know what your thoughts are. If the radio stops transmitting for what ever reason what would happen? Or if the receiver stops receiving then what happens? Any help would be appreciated as always. I would love to log 84 flights with no mishaps. GAWD!!

OK, I have replaced the Motor now as well. That leaves the Transmitter and Receiver. I have a JR XP7202 PCM Ultra Lite. Should I send it back to them to check it out?

Same problem

I am having the same problem... 2 to 3 minutes max, now I know I don't have strong enough cells so I was wondering is there any harm in running both of them at the same time like they do on the Trex 600?

I have 2 Commoncense 3 cell 1250's - should I just bite the bullet and get a bigger battery?

1250's seem a bit small for a 400. I would say 1800 will be a good starting point and cells capable of 15c discharge (~27 amps). You could try connecting 2 1250s . But BEWARE (DANGER!)- You MUST NOT connect them without balancing the cells of both packs to same voltage.

I would say, get a good lipo. Kokam, TP, Flight Power, Hyperion etc. I have heard of other lesser known brands that are cheaper but of comparable performance. A good charger and if you can, a balancer will also be a good idea.

I'm running 15C 2100 3cell lipo's. I don't think the lipo's are the problem, I'm leaning toward radio glitching. I thought PCM radios made glitching a thing of the past.

Well, to eliminate radio as a source of problem, you could do a range check or plug test the rx outside of the heli.
When you say, loosing power does the motor quit or is the throttle going down to low?
From what i understand, you are using a CC Phoenix? Sorry to ask, but have you programmed the ESC for the right motor?

No I'm using an align 35 amp ESC. The first thing I did was reprogrammed it. Then replaced it with a new one that came with the Trex se kit. Programed it, same problems. I have ordered a CC 35 esc for my new TREX though. Should get it this week.

The motor cuts out, I can't tell if its just a throttle down because it fires right back up again. I reset my fail safe on the radio to half throttle. See what that does. How do you do a plug test?

OK a wild guess here - try different throttle curves just to optimise the power from ESC to motor. say 0-40-50-60-70 or 0-60-60-70-70 (keep the high end below say 80) and see what happens.

I'm trying to keep it low in a hover so when it cuts out it doesn't fall more than a few inches. I'm new to this still, so I assume you mean increase head speed but not elevation?

yes, that's right. its just to calibrate your throttle to what the ESC finds good.

By calibrate he means it lets the ESC determine the low and high throttle positions.

Have been away from all the helicopter flying for a while and I am surprised the thread is still going.
There have been a couple questions regarding tracking.
My metal head converted MX-400 has also tracking issues with anything else than standard MX blades or TREX 305 mm blades. Unfortunately I can't find the 305's anymore.

I'm glad you posted that about tracking. I have the Ark metal head, and I bought a set of Mavrikk carbon blades. For the life of me, I couldn't get them to track. I also had some Align 315's, and couldn't get them to track. I never tried the 305's. Since I am not doing 3D, I just stick with the stock blades.
