Hi Blade.

I was just asking because up to now i only owned belt driven helis. The only different one, and the only 90 i have, is the R90SE and i have some issues with it.
My R90SE is brand new, i burned up to now only 5 tanks, but i hear some strange noises coming from the carbon tail drive which are upsetting me. I did not understood yet where these noises are coming from but the result in flight is not good. Vibrations, noises etc..
I think i will defenitely go to the belt way.

tfede,,,yes the torque tube drive in the Raptor is not the smoothest and
you have the make sure all the gears are alighned,, you may hear some noise but it should not cause any problems,, belt is a lot smoother but you do get some drag just to let you know.

I remember i read something about putting some extra bearings on the drive shaft to make it smoother. Do you know something about this ?

A long time passed from my last post but now i'm able to give a response on this mod: don't buy it !!!!

It arrived fully assembled and:

1) plastic parts horrible
2) the tail assembly had been assembled by a blind guy so once installed the complete mod the tail hub is at 84 degrees angle instead of 90 whatching the tail mast.
3) It cause so high vibrations that unscrewed the glow plug in the ys91 !!!!!!

Now the funny thing will be to send it back to the shop where i bought it.....

ethinger,

my one was from bizmodel and also mine turning it by hand was so smooth that i decided to try it also if the perpendicularity was not so good.

Up to 1650 rpm it was not so bad but swithing the governor to 1850 it started to vibe so hard that caused almost an heartbrake.
Because the glow plug was kept by a remote glowplug connector (an os one) the vibration unscrwed it causing an engine stop and forcing me my very first autorotation from 40 meters high !!!
God Bless Realflight !!!! I tried so many times autos in the sim that i switched myself in "simulator mode" and everythimg gone perfect. After that i could'nt breathe for 10 minutes.

I will take some pics of the upgrade and i'll try to post them so we can compare it. For now i can attach a link in which you can seee it:

Yes, this is my theory. It's the only thing i changed from my last flight.

Now i'm in the process to unfit engine etc. where i will check for any unbalance (fan, clutch, clutch bell and so on).

I'll keep you informed....

I don't think not having the tail box at exactly 90degrees or 86 degrees would cause the heli to vibrate the viration source should be located elsewhere

On some full size heli's there is a 30 degree tilt on the tail rotor helps to keep the heli stable. A while back some guys were trying it out.

IKYST this was not my meaning. Obviously the non correct perpedicularity of the tail shaft is not the cause of vibrations.
Probably there are some vibrations coming from the engine which are amplified from the belt mod.

Blade3d, this is why i tried it anyway. As result i had to trim the roll just 2 beep.

Work is in progress, i am trying to find out possible imbalance in the tail assembly.

Funny,

a lot of Three Dee NT owners are waiting for a drive shaft conversion for their machines coming with the new Three Dee MP XL.
A lot of them had vibrations on their machines because of the belt drive (above approx. 1600 rpm Headspeed).

Wondering why you guys want to convert a good working drive shaft into a vibrating beltdrive??

<<vibrating beltdrive>>
Either system set up correctly will run smoothly.
Either system adjusted incorrectly will induce vibrations.
