Venom

Thanks very much for the info on the night ranger 3d , much appreciated, I think I need to spend a bit of time setting up the trim , I notice mine is biased alot towards the rear, I have to use a lot of trim so i won't take off backwards, and also when forward stick is used, when looking at the rotor blades they move forward but also a fair way to the left.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that most are tail heavy. I stacked four nickels under the front of the frame, below the 4in1. Do not mount directly to the frame, or you'll get interferance with the 4in1. I used a small piece of SPAD material to buffer the noise.

Bluesjunky,

I did a similar, but much more expensive modification to cure the tail-heavy condition of mine.

I taped two quarters inside the extreme front of the nose.

My mod probably did not work any better, but it cost two and a half times as much.

night ranger 3d

G'day guys, just trying to set up my NR3D, as a newby I don't have much of an idea about doing so, I have looked at the balance of my heli and as bluesjunky recommended I have attached 2 x 50c pieces to the front making it more balanced.

One thing that concerns me is when i push the cyclic forward the rotor blades tild forward and to the left, and when rear cyclic is applied it tilts rearward and to the right, making the heli crab.
It also looks like one of the 2 servo's at the rear of the heli works harder than the other, ican get some adjustment from the trim on the controller but not enough. Shouldn't the rotor blades tilt exactly forward?

Also can someone let me know what the factory settings are for the dip switches on the controller. I think somene at the hobby shop I ordered mine from may have had a play with mine because it had dust on it when I unpacked it and the number 8 switch that you guys always refer to was already unlocked when I got it. Also how should the gyro be set , the two trim pots are set about half way (vertical)

this is the orientaion of the pin switch's as they were when I unpacked it,
1=left
2=Right
3=left
4=right
5=left
6=left
7=right
8=left
9=right
10=left
Regards Ash.

the only difference on mine is the #5 switch is to the right.

The "crab" may be to counteract the torque. Not sure on that one, but will check later. Off to work now, no rest for the wicked

if one servo is working harder it will make the swash tilt uneven. personaly i sent mine back and i would suggest the same. i have more than enough time flying and building helis,but it took me many attempts to fix things from the radio to the sticking pitch slider (the sticking pitch slider stopped the blades from getting pitch). not to mention the one servo worked intermittently. and finaly the last straw was when the flybar tipped durring flight. and yes the flybar rod was tight, i made sure to check it. the best thing i can say is that i am now getting a t-rex.

just a quick question if I have to lock the dipswitch 8 do i have to turn off the TX first? or is it okay that it is on? how will you store the new setting you made on the PZT/PLT knobs?

I just leave mine unlocked 'cause I switch different battery sizes, and have to adjust the knobs per flight. As soon as you switch it, it should be set, you don't have to turn it off.

Hope this helps

Mike50 i could not agree more with what u just said about the night ranger 3d. Junk is to good a word for all the freakin money this thing has sucked out of my wallet. If anyone wants a box full of 3d parts i would be more than happy to set u up. My advice to anyone is just bite the big one and just buy a Trex, the control of the 401 on the tail just makes me crap my pants every time he he.

It is not a TREX, but nothing is.

I have only been flying helicopters for 30 years of so, so am probably not qualified to comment.

The VNR3D flies very well. It is very quick in response and is not a trainer. For $220.00, you get a good flying helicopter with the radio, ready to go. You have to be on it all the time that you are flying it. A TREX is a much more expensive ($800.00-$1000.00 properly set up), very precise, very easy to fly ship, that feels like it is on rails by comparison. The two are so different, that it is not realistic to compare them. I prefer the Venom to the Blade CP and the Honeybee CP (although the Honeybee rolls flatter).

Most of my flying these days is on a TREX SE V2, but I still like and fly my Venom.

All of this is subjective, depending on level of expectation, skill level, perception etc. For what little it is worth, that is my opinion.

VNR3D

Although I have not flown since the early 80's I still have the skills of flying form planes to boats and to cars. I have decided to get back to Heli's and saw the VNR and bought one. I immediately realized it has been extremely too long when I crashed everytime. I then searched and found this forum and after reading yoru posts I see that I am going to have my hands full for quite some time.
But, I am finding the most dificult part is fine tuning and adjusting. Any help with that? My biggest problem right now is when I attempt to take off it immediately goes to the right and I have to fight from the beginning. I have spent $$ on parts in the three weeks of owning one. I am patient and feel with time I can master this machine, but I need some assistance with adjusting. Any idea where I can get some reliable material to help with this?

frischi,

Venom has been very good regarding advice and suppport. There is a very, very long thread on RC Groups forum on the VNR3D.

You are after a ship that hovers "hands off" at about three feet off the ground (i.e. out of ground effect. The problem here is that, at this stage of the game, it is dangerous to the helicopter to get it this high up. Is there anyone who can trim it out for you?

Also, are you using training gear (a necessity).

The instructions are not very good with regard to how the pitch/throttle mixing works.

This may help:

In "Normal" mode, the collective pitch should move from half throttle stick to full throttle stick. From low throttle stick to 1/2 throttle, there will be no collective movment. the main rotor blades should be at zero pitch or thereabouts until you move beyond 1/2 stick. Above 1/2 stick the blades should go positive.

When you flip the to 3D position, the lower end (i.e. zero to negative) becomes available. The throttle also will not go below 1/2 in 3D mode and will increase from 1/2 throttle as you move the throttle/collective stick up or down.

The PLT knob controls the total pitch range. The PIT knob controls the rate at which the pitch is mixed in vs throttle. Changing PIT actually displaces the entire pitch setting, relative to throttle, without changing the overall pitch range.

If you have a total pitch range of 18 degrees with the PIT set so that you have zero degrees of pitch at 1/2 stick, you should have +9 at full throttle and -9 at low throttle (again, in 3D mode). If you tweak the PIT knob to add two degrees of pitch at 1/2 throttle, without changing the PLT knob, you will end up with +11 at full throttle/collective stick and -7 at low stick.

As you change one knob, you usually have to adjust the other. The goal being relatively constant main rotor RPM.

Neither of the knobs has any effect unless DIP switch #8 on the back of the transmitter is moved to the "Unlock" position. Once you unlock it, the factory settings are lost.

This is an entirely different approach to electronic pitch mixing than I have ever seen. It is found on Exceed, Venom, and Walkera. It works well and is pretty easy to set up, but it is just different.

Thanks RAK. I will be spending time working on the repairs first. Not many, but I am alone with it and it is taking time to repair by myself. I will look for other threads on it and hopefully get it trimmed soon.
