I am thinking about buying a new computer before the end of the year. My old Gateway will run the older version of Reflex, but not XTR. So what machine should I buy that does all the usual computer stuff but will offer me the most trouble free operation with XTR?

Thanks

Hey,

The best option is to go for the best you can afford without breaking the bank. If your going to use the PC for other tasks as well as the Reflex you wont be spending money for nothing.

As to a basic spec to go by as a minimum I'd say :

- Pentium 4 3.0 ghz+ perhaps even "64 Bit" (Intel or AMD Athlon)
- 256mb Graphics card, ATI or Radion are some of the best
- 512mb RAM (most stores now bundle 1024mb as it's cheap, go for the fastest accessing ram you can. They do have different speeds, all within miliseconds of one another but with graphics the faster the better)
- Hard Drive space not really improtant, but any new machine don't accept any less than 80Gb.

I'm using an Intel P4 2.8Ghz with a Radion256mb DDR graphics card & 1Mb of DDR Ram and it runs Reflex great, all under Windwos XP PRO.

Hey,

I to have been running this PC setup for sometime now, I've built & sold better ones to others than what I am running

But it works well for me still and so I'm happy, I use mine for CAD in the day and other dutys like Reflex & games later on.

I am yet to see one of the top 64 bit PC's running XP 64 bit to really see if you get a boost in performance running XTR or not.
A lot of it, as with games to still comes down to the graphics card I think more than the main CPU as long as it's of reasonable speed.

I'm running a brand new Dell 8100 P4 3.2 with a Radeon X600 PCI Express card and I get in excess of 200 FPS in Reflex. Very impressed! I don't run games but my sons do and they report it's a good gaming machine as well.

A tip if you're buying Dell in the UK.

Price it up on the Net and save the order. Then phone them. They can retrieve the order and you can negotiate! By default, the Net order will add the 3 year warranty, the thing will be in the bin by then, and if you don't ask you won't get! I asked for a further discount and got another £60 knocked off and I just ordered another for a friend, got £50 knocked off and because it came with a free printer got a spare set of cartridges as well!

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the input! I’ll take a look at the Dell and see what kind of price I can get here.

Thanks

Hey,

The only thing I have against Dell is the fact from then on you are stuck with Dell approved parts, also 9 times out of ten nothing else will fit in their nice looking case's.

Read what is offered in the package carefully, as even though they show good prices on the TV for what you appear to be getting they are saving money elsewhere.

X30pilot,

I am using an HP Pavilion ZD8000 and before I had this one I had a ZD7000. Both of them run G3 and Reflex VERY nice. It has the big screen and a 256 Nvidia GeForce FX 5600 or ATI Radeon, depending on which one you get. This laptop will do just about anything.

I did not get mine at BestBuy, but they do stock them and have a pretty good price on them.
