My Posts This: Topic Forum | Time to bring this to the top again, it's nearly a year old. The EP 400 XP is now available. I've looked at the manual and see there are a LOT of subtle changes that have been made to the XP as compared to the EP 400. The majority of the changes are in the head. All balls instead of Z-bends, a much better looking pitch slider arrangement, and a fixed radius block with two pins to drive the swashplate. The boom mounted TR servo looks much more serviceable. An aluminum swashplate.
I've not seen one in person, would like to evaluate one to compare with the EP400 I bought to start this thread a year ago, but at this point, I'd like my next electric heli to be a bit bigger -- Lepton or Align 600.
I've looked through the XP parts list, and have done a quick comparison to the EP400 parts list. It appears that most of the new head components can be had at a very reasonable price. I may opt to upgrade the head stuff, add the boom mounted servo, and upgrade the pitch slider on my current EP.
Side frames at about $26 a side are a bit pricey to do the frame swap, as is the $41 aluminum swashplate.
This past year I've had the opportunity to fly the EP quite a bit. My biggest problem has been tail wag, regardless of the gyro gain setting. The stock mounting position on the side, with the servo arm poking in through the cutout in the sideframe severely limits the length of servo arm that can be used. I think this is the root cause of my wag, and a boom mounted servo would alleviate this problem, I believe.
I really like the feel of the EP 400 in the air, it's good and solid, it handles wind with ease, and is a fun little machine to fly. I'm using a Just Go Fly 450TH motor and a 32-tooth pinion. With TP2100 Pro Lites, I get about 6 1/2 minutes of hard flying with a couple more minutes of easy flying.
